Time off school in Reception year for holiday - ok or not?

DD1 starts reception in January and after looking at the price of going away in the school holidays, we are considering taking her out of school for 2 weeks in June. She will be 5 in May.

This will be the only time we do it, I wouldn't consider taking her out once she is in Year 1+.

Is this a bad thing (school 'allows' 10 days absence) or not? I assume she's not going to miss anything vital as it's only reception.

Just interested to hear views!

I have four children 15, 12, 2 and 5 months. I have never taken my children out of school to go on hols (although we did once return a day late from skiing due to missed flights). In hindsight I think this was silly of me. Once they get to high school you really can't afford to do it but at primary school stop being so prissy everyone and do it. I wish I had taken mine out for a whole term - maybe even two -and gone and done Europe. I have missed the opportunity now with my older ones but it is definitely something I would like to do with my two little ones.

Even if the child goes to Benidorm, he experiences an airport terminal, departure lounge, baggage carousel, passport control, a plane, the sea, sand, snorkling, a foreign language - even if it is only to say dos huevos et platter frites. Surely better than a chapter of Oxford Reading Tree, Worksheet 3b maths and worksheet 4a science.

Swedes2turnips1 I totally agree, even such a thing as seeing that not everywhere in the world is beautifully green can provide educational insights. The biggest immpression ever made on him was being invited into a Bedoin tent, and seeing the conditions the people live under. He thought they were just camping out!.

Interesting this. We were going to this year (reception and before has to start) but changed our mind. The reasons were complex but one was that the start/settling had been much harder than we expected and we thought it would be a big setback to miss so much school at this stage. We will have to do it at some stage though.

However virtually my dh whole family is now not talking to him because we changed our plans
