Teacher sharing images on SM

Morning I've stumbled across images of children including my own on Twitter from a teachers personal Twitter account and I feel a little uneasy about this. Does anyone know the rules and regs around this ? The school itself does have its own account so I'm not sure why it wasn't posted through that account. I know that there are several children who most definitely should not have their pictures posted ever and I cannot see anything in the schools policies about SM. TIA

The teacher would need permission that clearly stated from a parent/guardian allows social media photos. If you didn't give that permission, contact school immediately. It will be up to them to deal with permission for other children's photos.

glitterelf · 13/11/2021 11:33

Thanks there certainly wasn't any permission sought nor given. This is just one issue as there have been so many over the last year and a half. It's also an academy and complaints appear to either be ignored or swept under the rug.

This shouldn't happen.

The school should have clear policies surrounding the use of social media and sepcific permissions need to be sought from parents before images of children are used.

If they dont have those policies that is an issue in itself and needs addressing.

I'd notify the school.

lentilsandeggs · 13/11/2021 11:39

That’s out of line.
Screenshot and report to the school.

glitterelf · 13/11/2021 11:56

I have screenshot it and saved it and I knew that it was wrong what's worse is it's actually the deputy head who is obviously one of the safeguarding leads.

Is it a personal account but with her teaching name
Eg Mrsjonesyear2

Lots of teachers have these now for professional learning

No it is not there is nothing on it to suggest that she is a teacher only the fact I know her name and the nature of the image means that it could only have been a teacher who's taken it at the time.

That's very odd, what is the narrative of the post?

LaBellina · 13/11/2021 12:22

I wouldn’t be happy about this at all and report it to the school. It’s a violation of yours and others children’s privacy and completely unacceptable in a time where every professional that works with kids is supposed to be informed on the importance of safeguarding.

Smartiepants79 · 13/11/2021 12:22

That’s extremely strange. Could be a sackable offence. What on earth was she thinking.

ShinyHappyPoster · 13/11/2021 12:26

Some teacher's Twitter accounts aren't their personal accounts but are used for school even though they are just in the teacher's name. As for permissions, you can only comment on your DC and their permissions. You aren't privy to other DCs' information or permissions regarding photos and social media usage, and the school won't discuss it with you. If you feel their privacy has been breached, you'd need to inform their parents and let them raise it.

NellieBertram · 13/11/2021 12:27

Is it children during school time or in a public place?

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 13/11/2021 12:33

What’s the context of the Twitter account?

Surely, it’s linked to the schools account as can’t imagine any teacher, especially one with a leadership role and safeguarding role would do this on their personal account

ShinyHappyPoster · 13/11/2021 12:33

Usually social media and photographs' permissions are included in paperwork when you join the school or can be in permission slips for certain events. You wouldn't receive an individual request every time the school was going to post and if you've given permission for the main school account and the teacher's account is an official account then they would have the same permissions. You should still raise it since you don't remember giving permission for social media use and because you're unclear if the teacher's account is private or professional one. Lots of schools have a main account which posts information about the whole school and then individual teachers post about their class or subject. The main account can then retweet them if they want.
glitterelf · 13/11/2021 12:55

It was during school time regarding the observation of the two minute silence on Thursday. The account itself only has 4 tweets and not all surrounding the school. Whilst I'm totally aware of the fact I can only complain about permission for my child I certainly have not given permission for this. Also am I right in saying it's normal to seek permission yearly ? Alongside data collection sheets ?
The images have not been posted on the school account but the school account has been tagged which is how I've stumbled across them.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 13/11/2021 13:14

My kids schools and nursery don’t ask for permission yearly, schools are very hot on this, you’ve probably given permission a while ago. If it’s linked to the school with only 4 tweets I doubt it’s their personal account.

glitterelf · 13/11/2021 13:17

It's not linked with the school though just the tweet has tagged the school.

Email/talk to the head about this. Show your proof and detail why it makes you uneasy, the lack of permission etc. Depending on the response/explanation you can decide what to do next.

However, if she did tag the school official account in it, she's not exactly keeping it hidden is she? They must be aware if it by now.

KalvinPhillipsManBun · 13/11/2021 15:35

Perhaps your child consented?

Theunamedcat · 13/11/2021 15:36

You give permission for it to be shared on the schools account not anyone's personal account though? Or is it just my school that makes that distinction?

autumnalvibes · 13/11/2021 15:38

When you join the school you fill in a form to either give consent or opt out. Sounds like it could be affiliated to the school if she's tagged the school in it? Worth finding out though, she definitely shouldn't be sharing any images on a personal account or of children whose parents or carers have opted out of their photos being shared on the website/social media sites.

Ginger1982 · 13/11/2021 15:39

You need to report this to the school. Can I ask which country of the UK you're in?

Feenie · 13/11/2021 16:14

Perhaps your child consented?

Wouldn’t count, I’m afraid.

glitterelf · 13/11/2021 16:53

@KalvinPhillipsManBun

Perhaps your child consented?
My child is 7 so highly doubtful and doubt every child was asked permission Grin

That's what I thought.
