Year 6 leavers events going ahead this year?

Have your children’s schools planned anything for the year 6 children leaving primary school this year?

Curious as to what other schools are doing (if anything).

We've not heard anything yet. I do hope so as they are in a class bubble anyway.

Dementedswan · 09/06/2021 19:55

They usually have a themed yr6 disco and sleepover at school, plus perform a show for parents and play heartbreaking music to photos of the class from nursery days etc.. not a dry eye Grin

Passthesauce · 09/06/2021 19:55

We have plans but don't know if they can be put into practice as yet! They'll do as much as possible in school but parental participation will depend upon how the roadmap goes. The residential should be going ahead as that's already permitted - I think transition day might be looking a bit dodgy, though.

Everything crossed......

Cattitudes · 09/06/2021 19:55

Residential, cycling and leavers assembly. Play is cancelled.

FricasseeTurnips · 09/06/2021 20:07

Transition day is on.

Residential was last year and so cancelled but they had an adventure teamwork day out instead.

Day to theme park cancelled.

No idea about leavers assembly or the bbq. I would imagine the BBQ could happen as it would just be Yr6 and their teachers playing on the field. The assembly though, with parents- I can't see it happening. Hopefully they'll record a version of it for us to watch at home though - it's my last child at that school after 14 continual years. Perhaps I could watch the video at home with some prosecco and the other long time leaving parents Grin

Interesting to hear the approaches of different schools & amazed that some are doing things like sleepovers. Your children are very lucky.

In normal pre-covid times, ours would have residential, year 6 play/show, disco/party plus a leavers assembly where they talk about their memories of the school & all the mums cry 😭

DS’s residential was cancelled & was a fight (for school) to get the money back so they are reluctant to do anything that costs much Incase it has to be cancelled at short notice.

Last year after lockdown 1 they let the Y6 parents into school for a socially distanced outdoor picnic/leavers assembly but this year our head has decided that whatever they decide to do will be a kids only event - parents cannot attend. I feel so gutted I could cry.

If the roadmap goes as planned is there likely to still be restrictions on whether parents can enter school premises? Or any reason why they couldn’t? If people can once again go into nightclubs in large numbers, why can we not watch our children’s leavers assembly? It seems crazy. How come some schools can pull off a leavers assembly but others can’t?

Leavers hoodies seem to be about it.

Residential was cancelled for last September, DS is gutted about that especially because all the other local primaries seem to have rearranged something - even if only a night or two.

Transition days are still on so far. I hope they manage to get some other events.

AlwaysLatte · 10/06/2021 00:24

They have a camping trip at school (tents on the playing fields, fire pit etc) and a trip to a local park for an event. Also a transition day to the new school. But no residential trip and no assemblies as far as I'm aware.

TheDukeissoHot1 · 10/06/2021 00:32

@AlwaysLatte camping trip at school sounds fab! DS might suggest that as an idea to his teacher Grin

We do have transition days planned at secondary school so at least that’s something.

Activities week, hoodies, disco, limos at the end of school (yes really that's a whole other story) but residential cancelled which is bs because they next county over did theirs.

IdblowJonSnow · 10/06/2021 00:37

Residential cancelled but day trips to go ahead. Well, fingers crossed anyway.
How many bubbles are going to be burst with rates shooting up. Excuse the voice of doom.

Cattitudes · 10/06/2021 07:04

To be fair they have said that the leavers assembly might be on zoom if things are not looking safe.

stuckinarutatwork · 10/06/2021 07:09

Ours has cancelled the yr 6 trip to a theme park and the leavers' disco is also cancelled. They will be having a games evening on the school field instead.
The parents are getting together to organise a disco privately at a sports club in our town (which we'll all have to pay for). We've also had to pay for the leavers' hoodies which have always been paid for by the PTA in previous years (no funds for it this year as they've not had any fundraising opportunities).

stuckinarutatwork · 10/06/2021 07:12

Oh and there will be no transition day at the local secondary (the yr 5 open day was cancelled too, so my DC has never stepped foot in their new school) Angry

Passthecake30 · 10/06/2021 07:12

After school party and a play (which might be recorded).
Residential cancelled, as is the autumn term yr 7 bonding residential. I feel sad that my dd has missed out on so much more than her brother. Though I’ve saved about £700!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 10/06/2021 07:18

Yr6 camped on the school field before half term.
Leavers assembly is one adult per child.
Transition day still planned.

Obviously last two might still be cancelled...
It's the last year the school has 30pupils in the group... It expanded to 60 the next year.

cauliflowerkorma · 10/06/2021 07:27

Residential and a presentation evening outdoors including parents and other fun things in school. One parent also organised a private party for them in a hotel function room. Sports day still on but only year group not whole school to limit parents numbers. Leavers hoodies too.

But now the bubble has burst and residential is next week.

Sigh.

actiongirl1978 · 10/06/2021 07:31

If 21st June goes ahead:
Sports day with parents
End of year assembly with parents
Year6 BBQ
Overnight camp at school
Picnic on field on last day then all children to local water sports place which has a group booking

If no 21st
No parents for sports day or assembly, everything else to go ahead

ButtercupBlue · 10/06/2021 07:36

At our school the year 6's usually have a leaver's assembly, weekend residential trip, prom (school disco really) and transition day in their new high school.

This year there's no assembly for DS1, the residential weekend is going to be a day trip instead, the 'prom' is going ahead as normal (unless something changes between now and July?!) and we don't yet know if the high school transition day is happening.

I do really feel for him as I remember it being such a pivotal time and it's a shame he's having to miss out on so much of it.

sheeplikessleep · 10/06/2021 07:37

Activity week instead of residential (theme park type days out / activities for 5 days) and leavers party but no y6 play for parents. To be fair my DS is more excited about the 5 days out.

Oh and hoodies.

Iamnotthe1 · 10/06/2021 08:18

One thing to keep in mind is that the schools will be heavily influenced by the DfE guidance. Even if the general legal restrictions on the movement and meeting of people are removed, that doesn't mean the DfE guidance will change or be completely removed.

This will affect how involved parents will be allowed to be.

yellowtulips205 · 10/06/2021 08:37

In school: residential has been moved, then cancelled, then rearranged so hopefully still going ahead.

Sports Day - just heard no parents.
Leavers' Play - will be held outside (presumably to give best chance of parents attending).
Talk about a day trip out - not heard whether that is going ahead yet.
Transition days organised by secondaries so all different - DD's is on course with parents' talk to be held outside, but will be moved to online if necessary (this is the one thing I massively want to go ahead).

Y6 party is organised out of school by parents, so currently looking very dicey as it's across all classes.

Regardless of the National picture, schools have to follow the DfE guidance for schools. There’s no indication that this will be updated on 21st June. The bubbles relate to track and trace, making it easier to isolate those that need to isolate if there’s a case. Schools who choose to ignore DfE guidance are taking a big risk in my opinion.

Hidingunderablanket · 10/06/2021 20:12

On residential this week, and having a glorious time of it!
Leavers assembly with parents will be outside if possible, or recorded for parents to watch.
Hoodies as usual.
No play.
If another few day trips can be fitted in, they will, eg bowling, cinema, zoo.
No disco which is normally for all of KS2 but they will have a class party and movie night.
Parents are planning an outdoor picnic on a local green for ourselves. We’ll all bring our own food and a blanket and just chill. I actually think I prefer this as an option tbh!

ilovesushi · 11/06/2021 09:35

One day trip instead of the residential, sports day in classes without parents, school production without an audience to be poorly filmed on a wobbly ipad judging from coverage of past events. Parents have organised a leavers party at a local venue.
I am gutted about the sports day and the play. It's just PE and drama if you don't have an audience there. I've had kids in the school for 9 years and this is my last so it feels very anti climactic.
