Soooo we love football in our family and the women's euros is coming to England next year and my granddaughter wants to go. She will be in year 4 so no exams etc and it's in July so at the end of.the year. Would you take your child? If so would you ask the school and if they say no would you do.it anyway? It's a big thing and it's prob not gonna happen again in England. Any advice would be great. Thanks

I'd go for a it - sounds amazing. In terms of how to approach it with the school - I'd see what other parents' experience at the school has been.

Hellocatshome · 19/05/2021 22:48

How long would you be taking her out for? I would definitely do it and just tell the school the truth, nothing good ever comes from lying.

CarrieBlue · 20/05/2021 06:06

Why would she need to be taken out of school? Won’t there be any evening matches?

Norestformrz · 20/05/2021 06:18

It's only 4 days at the end of the year. You might have to accept unauthorised absence but I can't see most heads refusing.

Cheesypea · 20/05/2021 06:46

I'd take her to one match and try to mininimise time out of school.

Vik1222 · 20/05/2021 07:39

I don't no what time the matches are they and as they are in different parts of the country need to travel ect. There's 1 were sleeping there for the rest are just days. If we can leave after school we will do its 7 days off in total

When we've had similar sporting events before I know that DC have been taken out of school afternoon registration to go to an evening match. And then just had a late night.
I think this would be totally fine (and would actually involve no "official" missed school. Taking the DC out for 7 days sounds over the top. Won't some of those dates be in the school holidays anyway? Perhaps just go to those.

Aprilwasverywet · 20/05/2021 08:29

My ds 6 will miss one day next month. Secondary has a training day so they won't miss any.. We are going camping.. Previously teacher training was the Monday and Tues of Sept before the start of term and we got a cheap week end away then. They have changed it unfortunately..

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 20/05/2021 08:32

So you want to take to multiple matches?

A day off for one game is different to many days off to just see sport.

ConfusedAdultFemale · 20/05/2021 08:46

Is July not the holidays anyway so they wouldn’t be in school? Confused

ineedaholidaynow · 20/05/2021 08:50

@ConfusedAdultFemale if in England most schools don’t break up until late July (unless private school).

Hellocatshome · 20/05/2021 09:01

Thats a lot of matches will she really be interested enough to want to watch all of them?!

UserAtRandom · 20/05/2021 09:12

Yes, this does read more like a trip that the adults in the family want to make and they will just drag their DC along. Going to 1 match would be fine if it was just "for the experience". I'd really question whether an 8/9 year old wants to be dragged from place to place and spend lots of time sitting about in stadia. If she's already used to going to football matches - both home and away - regularly, then that's different.
Frazzledfranny · 20/05/2021 09:18

Go for it. What an experience she will have! She will never forget it!

Also I know a football mad 9 year old who would absolutely not get bored at a match!

Have posters actually been to a football match of a much loved team? The atmosphere is electric and an almost carnival feel. Especially at big games like this!

Dilligaf81 · 20/05/2021 09:35

Obvs posters here haven't got a sports made dd ds if they think a 8/9 year old can't be interested to want to go to multiple games especially a tournament where each game matters.

Go for it, July is a real wind down anyway and it's not like you can do this in the holidays, it's fixed timings not set by you so go off and enjoy.

Love51 · 20/05/2021 09:42

You say it is your granddaughter. Do you have day to day care? If either of her parents object then don't take her. If parents aren't on the scene then it is your choice.

idontlikealdi · 20/05/2021 09:44

I wouldn't, I would take to a match but not 7 days out of school.

FelicityPike · 20/05/2021 09:52

Yep!
We’re an ice hockey family & we would do it if the World’s came to the UK (doubt it though lol).

Vik1222 · 20/05/2021 10:06

She loves football and wouldn't be bored she has the dates in the calendar already she also has a friendship with some of the players who she talks to every game and they recognise her. She's football mad. Her parents have said it's fine if we want to take her, and we would go without her if she couldn't come there's no issue there. She goes to home and away matches as it is and was upset she couldn't go to France for the world Cup so this is the next best thing. If she didn't want to go we wouldn't take her

Would you pay if the parents get fined?

espresso14 · 20/05/2021 14:33

I took my DD out of school for a day to watch the juniors at the world cycling champs in Yorkshire when she was in Class1. She really enjoyed it, and great for her to see girls going fast and challenge those gender stereotypes at a young age.

stuckinarutatwork · 20/05/2021 14:37

I'd say no for a week. Could you make a long weekend and just take her out for a couple of days - say Friday & Monday?
In our LA - you will be fined for an absence if more than 4 days and it's £60 per parent per child.

WTFisNext · 20/05/2021 14:47

If Wales had qualified I'd have taken my daughter to as many matches as possible (I actually hate football). There aren't many opportunities for girls to watch women's international football live because very few friendlies happen...plus the atmosphere is brilliant compared with men's games in my experience as a non-football fan forced to endure 90+ minutes of the tedium

I'd take your Lioness fan and let her enjoy. The next World cup is in Australia & NZ which would be far more difficult to take her to!

stressfuljune · 20/05/2021 18:18

We'll be doing it. School can say what they like lol

stressfuljune · 20/05/2021 23:41

Actually not for 7 days but yes for the ones we can travel to.
