Surprised at DDs spellings this week! She is in Yr3

Up until the week before half term, DD brought home spellings that she did not need to learn, usually 3 - 4 letters long! Well this week, talk about shock to the system these are the words! :-

Accuracy
Absolute
Activate
Adjective
Aerial
Albino
Allergy
Almighty

I am all for DD being stretch etc, but not sure why a seven year old would need to spell some of these words!

What kind of spellings does your 7 yr old get?

I cannot think where these spellings have come from. They are certainly not on the list of high frequency words for that year group, nor can I think they appear in the Spelling Bank activities for year three....they seem irrelevant and random. Maybe the teacher was having a bad week and just opened the dictionary to generate the list..... can't wait to see what she brings home this week!!!

coppertop · 04/11/2007 20:44

Seems a bit odd. Ds1 is in Yr3 and so far has only been given things like days of the week, months of the year etc.

pinkbubble · 04/11/2007 20:51

TBH, thats exactly what I thought - ODD!

would rather her getting used to words that she will spell in everyday language!

I had a secret smile when I spotted "muff" on my DS's (Yr2) spelling list. Come on - how likely is he likely to use that (in its proper meaning (or otherwise!))?

bunnyhunny · 04/11/2007 20:55

and there is no theme (apart from them all beginning with A). usually I would set all dis- words or homonyms or something

pinkbubble · 04/11/2007 21:00

Perhaps they were testing the parents to see who helps their DC with spellings, luckily for me, DD did manage to get these after a few times, but imagine the poor soles who dont!

at "muff".

PussinWellies · 05/11/2007 12:16

...and did anyone else's Yr 2 child get

stick thick prick chick

which had me leaving the room abruptly rather than testing child like a proper grown-up mummy would?

TrinityRhino · 05/11/2007 12:22

DD is in year2 and had spellings like we, he, me, she a few weeks ago, which I was shocked at as she spells everything out at home.
Then a week or two later she came home with words like swimming, playing, scoring etc.
I mentioned to her that they seemed more appropriate for her and she said it was because she had moved up spelling groups, so the group she was in had been doing harder words already. Maybe the same goes for your DD??
If they think she was finding her previous spellings easy they could have moved her up a notch.

I had to suppress a snigger when Ds (year 3) had KNOB as one of his words.

Tonight we had:
gullibilty
cheekily (very apt)
accentuate
Angrily
Greedily
Lazily
Centimetres
HAppily
Suddenly
Realisation

Which seem very random to me. Last term we got Green, Apple, Worm etc so I've noticed a bit of a jump since half term too!

Not only does SS have to learn these for a test he has to write them in a usable sentence. I'm such a shite teacher, 'stepmom' What does gullibility mean? Erm .....did you know that rabbits grow on trees dear?

Elphaba · 05/11/2007 21:49

How can you not have looked in his spelling book since September? Don't you practice them with him?

Elphaba · 06/11/2007 11:58

Ditto, ds too, but I do still make sure I know what the spellings are, check there is nothing he needs help with and look in the book to see he got them all right!
