Surprised at DDs spellings this week! She is in Yr3

Up until the week before half term, DD brought home spellings that she did not need to learn, usually 3 - 4 letters long! Well this week, talk about shock to the system these are the words! :-

Accuracy
Absolute
Activate
Adjective
Aerial
Albino
Allergy
Almighty

I am all for DD being stretch etc, but not sure why a seven year old would need to spell some of these words!

What kind of spellings does your 7 yr old get?

Aaaaargh. My dd is in Y3 and has yet to be sent home with any spellings at all. I have asked her teacher who said the class would get them after half term. None have arrived yet. I mean if she could spell I wouldn't mind, but she can't.

Well, DD is having her spelling test today so we shall see how she gets on with them.

I have to admit that when I first saw them, wondered if she had got her home contact book muddled with other DDs (who is 10). But younger DD came home from sch yesterday and told me that Teacher had asked her about spellings, to which DD replied yes I have been practicing. The Teacher then asked her to spell albino (lucky for DD that was her favourite word) and just rattled it off! DD is sure that all children have been given these spelling to learn (even the DC who struggle reading etc!)

DS only just started getting weekly spellings in yr3, just 5 words on an in-class test every Friday. They all follow a pattern so far, like:
vegetable, acceptable, capable... (all ending in -able, or -oes, or -ful, etc.)

Would have understood it if there had been a theme, all for stretching children and all that, but for the life of me I can't quite get my head around some of those words, and how they will actually help develop their writing skills.

Have spoke to another teacher from a different school and she said it sounds like "WOW" words to boost their creative writing. Seems more sense now, but still odd words to use!

Whether or not they are difficult (and some are), some of them are a bit, well, unusual. Exactly how is 'albino' going to boost an 8 year old's creative writing? Maybe they will all start writing stories about children who have albino rabbits as pets.

DS1 is now in Y5 but gets equally ridiculous words. This year already we have had 'autopsy', 'phenomena', 'armadillos' and 'gurus'. Perhaps to boost their writing they should ask them all to write a story containing all those words....

Thought last week were odd, but think this week ones are worse!

Analyse and Angular are just a couple of them!

Oh what a way to spend your Sunday afternoon!
