Does school give feedback on work submitted?

My Yr6 DD has received no marking or feedback on the remote learning work submitted other than a cut and paste ‘well done’ or ‘good work’

Does your school give feedback or mark the online work?

(Maths is marked by me from answer sheet provided.)

Very little, and usually so far after we’ve done the initial work that DC have no interest in correcting any mistakes.

ForeverBubblegum · 04/02/2021 08:22

We usually get a 10 second ish voice recording of the teach saying well done, and something about the work (so not just same recording for all). We send 2 things a day and get feedback for each, usually within 24h. DS is 4, older children at the school get more in depth written feedback.

ginsparkles · 04/02/2021 08:29

Yes. A comment on every piece. With handwriting we are often given little tips and asked to repeat certain words. Maths answers are detailed in a video so we can see the working out, and teacher actively comments asking us to relook at questions or try different methods.
Yesterday we had a meltdown over timestables and so we informed the teacher and she altered the work and gave suggestions how to support DD.
They also share the children's work with the class, so pictures they have drawn for art, the creative writing they have done etc. All with the child's permission.
If we asked a question we receive a reply within an hour or two.

Finding it so hard to keep them motivated with the lack of feedback.

LetItGoToRuin · 04/02/2021 13:01

Yes. My Y5 child receives a written comment on the day's work, posted on Teams before the start of school the next day (occasionally a day later). It varies from 'good work today' to 5-6 lines of text containing more detailed praise or guidance.

Maths is marked by me from the answer sheet provided on the following day, but occasionally the teacher will comment on a mistake on the same day, so they definitely take a look every day.

Snuzzle · 04/02/2021 17:41

Yes Y2 DD gets comments or voice notes on almost every piece of work and on certain work the teacher makes a video of her going through and marking it so that DD gets feedback on what’s good and what needs more detail.
Her English and curriculum work get a lot more feedback than her maths. She was working at Y4 level before lockdown though and now she’s only getting the same work as the rest of the class so the teacher knows it’s really easy for her.

MaintenanceOrNoMaintenance · 04/02/2021 17:42

Teacher comments on everything and the responses are very personal so it'll be "Well done (DD) I love that you used the colour red, I wouldn't have thought to use red for this" so no way she's copying and pasting. She also adds pointers but they're directed to the parent so the next part of the comment will be "Mum try getting (DD) to use purple for the number 10 next time"

tummyaches · 04/02/2021 17:52

Yes we have four live lessons a day - English maths phonics and topic and work handed in for each which is marked individually by the next day with personalised comments.

ParadiseLaundry · 04/02/2021 17:57

Ours have said that as they are putting in a full day of teaching the other children they will mark work only 'when they have time'.

MostLee · 04/02/2021 18:03

Yes, a comment for each piece submitted daily. For maths it's usually something like - 100% correct well done. Or, all correct except for 3a as you have ..... instead of ..... etc. For English she's had comments like 'great instructions. I especially liked all the detail you used to describe... Remember to check your spellings carefully... etc

DisorganisedOrganiser · 04/02/2021 18:04

Yes. Maths marked by children themselves though as answers given after the task. Other stuff marked on Teams. I must be in the minority though as I really don’t care about getting feedback. My kids are not remotely bothered either. I try to encourage them with the good feedback but they don’t seem to care as it is so far from real school. It is such a hassle, yet another thing to have to log in and check. Sometimes the teacher will suggest they go back and correct something. It’s hard enough to get them to do it the first time, let alone do it again when there is more stuff to cover the next day! I’d be very happy if they abandoned marking altogether. But I also think they should have suspended the primary curriculum and had no pretence that we are ‘home learning’ in the same way as class.

I’m hugely grateful to the teachers and we do look at the feedback but I would much rather everyone’s workload was reduced (and also the teachers too) and have very little marking.

happytoday73 · 04/02/2021 18:07

Yes... Maths marked by parent but we send in example work of different types and its commented on... Sometimes just a little/generic, other times more detailed with things to work on or praise...

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 04/02/2021 18:11

Yes feedback is given every evening on work submitted by 3pm that day if its submitted later feedback is given the next day.

LillyBugg · 04/02/2021 18:13

No, year 1 here. Usually just get a 'well done that's great' and occasionally personal comments but no actual marking taking place. Luckily my DS couldn't give a toss.

ChristmasinJune · 04/02/2021 18:14

Yes this year's teacher is fantastic.
In year 2 it took a week to get work approved then it often only got approved or liked and approved.
This year's teacher responds almost immediately and is positive and chatty but will make one or two suggestions. Mainly spellings.

As a teacher I try to respond to every piece and give each child a little extra something to look at once a day. They rarely do the corrections or extra challenges though.

GintyMcGinty · 04/02/2021 18:15

High school is - good work, well done

Primary school is giving personalised feedback

minniemango · 04/02/2021 18:20

Year 5 & 6 children do the work on an online platform so the teacher can correct/mark/give feedback "live" as they're doing it or marks it once collected.

Year 2 child does work on paper and then I photograph it to submit, but the teacher still comments positively or gives "remember your capital letters and full stops" type feedback.

Monkey1111 · 04/02/2021 18:26

I think it all depends on the set up in school. We have so many vulnerable/ critical workers in school that all staff are in teaching bubbles. My school day starts at 6:30/ 7am when I record my daily videos. I teach a live lesson in the morning then teach all day. I try to keep an eye on the home learning through out the day but can have up to 40 posts to approve by lunch. We’re trying to keep on top of it all and want the children at home to feel as supported as possible.

It seems that some schools are fortunate enough to have one member of the year group team available to focus on the online learning without having to teach a bubble at the same time. If this is the case then I would expect a regular detailed feedback.

Our schools 2 form entry, but one of the teachers of the other year 2 class refuses to do any in school or online learning, so as well as teaching the 7 in her class, she has 2 days a week where she's joined by the 7 in the other year 2 class and then is supporting all 60 children in the year group. The other 3 days the other teacher is in but she works in another school the other days so can't help.

I know as I'm friends with the TA for our class and she says the class teacher hasn't seen her own child in waking hours since before Christmas.

Monkey1111 · 04/02/2021 18:55

@MaintenanceOrNoMaintenance
How can the other teacher refuse to work? If she was shielding I could understand why she’s not in school, but she should be supporting the home learning.

I’m really hoping that things will go back to some sort of normality sooner rather than later. After school we are doing welfare calls and then prepping everything for the home learning packs for the following week. The majority of staff are absolutely exhausted and crawling to the end of term. I’ve got parents’ evening to look forward to next week too. 😳

Strictlychacha · 04/02/2021 18:58

Thank you - interesting to hear all the different experiences.

Some encouragement would really help as she thrives on it. The recorded feedback sounds great.

@Monkey1111 yes her teacher only does the online.

@Strictlychacha
Have you had any direct contact from the teacher?
Obviously, everyone’s circumstances are different. Maybe she’s struggling to homeschool her own children at the same time. Or it could be the expectation set by the school. It might be worth sending the teacher an email if you’re worried. Not in a negative way but asking for more specific feedback so you can support her.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 04/02/2021 19:12

Current school - very detailed feedback on every single piece -normally within hours but always within 24 hours. It's two form entry - one teacher at school with all that years key worker children and one online . The teachers swap every week or so as they have merged the classes and it works well.
Previous school not a single piece of feedback at all between March and July. Our kids found it sooo demotivating and we -thinking that a second lockdown was likely - moved them. Both state

bathorshower · 04/02/2021 22:33

DD's feedback has been one line/piece of work, and none of it constructive criticism, all unfailingly positive. Having been shown other classmates' work by DD (they can all see each other's work once it's approved), there is some constructive feedback there, but no more than a single line per piece of work. We're able to support DD in doing the work, so it's largely correct (maths) or we've tried to explain what we think is required (English).

The lack of feedback is actually what I find most frustrating, especially as one teacher is monitoring those learning at home throughout the day (two form entry, one teacher/year in school each week).

DisorganisedOrganiser · 04/02/2021 22:37

Ah see I don’t want constructive criticism. I want the poor kids to be left alone. It just feels like a slap in the face when they have done the work and then one little thing is picked up as wrong. I’d be much happier with a well done or with no marking at all.
