This is impossible for my autumn born year 1 child but this also seems really hard to read? Not sure how concerned I should be!

@NewlyGranny

If the issue is blending sounds to make s word, OP, why not play some oral games with her, like asking her what the word is when you say "Sssss ... i... t"? Leave about a second between sounds. As she gets it, ask her to segment some words into their sounds for you to blend.
This is good advice. I did this with my DC when they were pre-school. Lots and lots of games with sounds. I remember doing potato prints with some letters/sounds, and doing other sounds in mud and sand, and with twigs (SAHM, so nothing else to do Grin). S was a hissing snake. "Ow" was me pretending to be hurt every time we came across that combination, and so on... Reading sentences and then books came completely naturally after that. There's loads you can do beforehand that doesn't involve sitting there and following a book.

Needless to say, PFB benefited from all this input more than subsequent DC, who had to pick it all up a bit more as they went along.

My y1 D's could read all of that. Not sure where he is ability wide in his class (how do people know?!). I would be a bit concerned your dd is struggling with blending at this stage. I would be even more concerned about her EYFS assessment. Those assessments put her well below where she should be and I am really surprised the school are not concerned.

I agree I would be concerned, not so much for her reading or writing, but because she is 30-50 in making relationships, managing feelings and behaviour and 22-36 in speaking and listening & attention. Her ability to even begin to learn will be affected by her delays in the other areas. This is a concerning delay and I would want further investigation.

What is she under SALT for?

Ds1 is summer born year 1, he could read all of them. He could not, however, do an identifiable drawing. He'd try, but you'd be hard pushed to match it to the words!

My July born Y1 could read all of these columns but has just made a massive leap with his reading - wouldn't been able to read all columns (or wanted to) a few weeks ago. However would definitely not be able to draw a recognisable picture for each picture. Is this a homework task?

Frazzled2207 · 03/10/2020 12:02

My summer born year1 could do the first column but no way with the others.
However at the beginning of this year like yours he couldn’t blend sounds at all. Just recognised Individual letters/phonic sounds. He did get the hang of blending almost overnight as did his older brother.
The last column looks very difficult to me. I’d be surprised if many in his class could do those.

@Freespirit1511

She also was in throughout lockdown so had two staff members in a bubble of 10 kids to benefit from for several months.
My DD is Y2 and was in through lockdown but not every day. She very little reading in that time. They are due to do their phonics screening next month and she can just about do that Spicy and they said she's borderline to pass. There are a few who struggle more than her but not many.
