DD1 started school last week & seems to love it,thank goodness. It is a village school,so not huge, but there are only 9 of them in reception.I wondered how many children are in the average reception class?

18 now, but we have a staggered intake - so another 13 arrive after Christmas. DD/DS school is over-subscribed - obviously with 31 in the class someone got in on appeal.

HappyMummyOfOne · 06/09/2007 12:09

8 I think DS has in his but its a small village school.

PinkChick · 06/09/2007 12:12

dear god i thought dd's was bad at 20..seems its the norm really!

CountessDracula · 06/09/2007 12:26

So are all these schools with less than 30 undersubscribed then?

IIRC 22 is the optimum size for individual attention and good dynamics

Tommy · 06/09/2007 12:29

30 in DS2's and 30 in the other 2 classes as well.

They only have half the class in morning and afternoon for the first2 weeks though

CissyCharlton · 06/09/2007 12:31

My ds had 30 in his class, 30 in the second class. One TA between the two classes.

HuwEdwards · 06/09/2007 12:33

28

30 (maximum for oversubscribed village school) Has teacher and 2 t/a's, one child has SN and has additional one to one t/a

Fennel · 06/09/2007 12:43

Reception has about 16 in our (village) school. It's oversubscribed but small rooms and the school overall doesn't have room for more than about 80 children in 4 classes.

The dds were in classes of 30 in their first school, it hasn't seemed to make a huge difference to them really. The bigger classes tend to have more classroom assistants so there was still maybe 1 teacher/TA to about 15 children.

DarthVader · 06/09/2007 12:53

/usually 30 in schools in towns unless school is v unpopular

villages more variable

UnquietDad · 06/09/2007 12:54

In a state school, numbers are capped at 30 for KS1. Heads like to keep it at 30 - neither above nor below - for funding purposes.

Maybe some of these being quoted with lower numbers are private schools.

Otherwise, I'm amazed how many come in at under 20, unless they are just in "first tranche" entrance like my DS.

elliott · 06/09/2007 13:01

A school doesn't have to be 'v unpopular' to have less than 30 pupils per class - it depends on the overall supply of schools in the area, and on the capacity of the school - ds1's school average about 50 per year intake, so clearly has to be split between two classes. Most other local schools are not oversubscribed either.

elliott · 06/09/2007 13:04

We are lucky to live in an area where pretty much all the local state schools are of a good standard so most people just opt for the one nearest them - so there isn't an awful bunfight to get them into the supposed 'best' school. That helps even it all out a bit I think.

Clary · 06/09/2007 13:08

About 25 this year, two classes of that.

Last yr FS2 was 3 classes of 27-28 (total 80).

This year is undersubscribed, yes Uunquietdad.

DD's yr is also undersubscribed (yr 2) but now has hit 30 in each class. Better hope we don't get any more eh!

Agree CD 20-22 is best number.

Smithagain · 06/09/2007 13:26

There were about 27 when she was in Reception last year. The year above has 17 and so does the new Reception intake this year. I don't know what we did to be in such a popular year!

Kaz33 · 06/09/2007 13:30

Two classes of 30, teacher and full time assistant in each class and additional teaching assistant in each class for the first term. So briefly 1:10 ratio

Two classes of 20 last year, has crept up to about 23 in Year 1. Don't know about this year as DS2 doesn't start for a couple of weeks.

Isababel · 06/09/2007 20:22

"A school doesn't have to be 'v unpopular' to have less than 30 pupils per class"

I totally agree with this, in DS school they have 2 reception classes, each with 10-11 children, a teacher and a TA. Most of the children have been in the waiting list for ages. And, yesterday, I learned to my surprise that the family of a child in DS's class moved all the way from the other side of the world for him to attend this school.

OrmIrian · 06/09/2007 20:23
  1. In both classes.
SparklePrincess · 06/09/2007 21:06

At dd1`s old school (in town) she had 30 in her reception class, but dd2 had only 13 in her class once we moved to the sticks.
Both their classes this year are still only around 20 (state school) It has its problems though. Dd2 was very lonely last year due to lack of girls in her class. Then her one friend went to private school. Thankfully she has made friends with a new girl this year so is happy at school again.

NAB3 · 06/09/2007 21:06
  1. Don't know how many in the other 2 Reception classes as we haven't had a class list this time.
cba · 06/09/2007 21:09

10, two classes of ten with two teachers and one ta

FuriousGeorge · 06/09/2007 21:16

This really is interesting.I had no idea that the children can begin in tranches. In dd's class, she who was 4 the day before school began,is in the same class as her friends who are nearly 5.

She isn't lonely as she already knows all the children in class,as they all attended the village pre school together. They have a teacher, plus a TA & other classroom assistants available too, whom are shared with year 1.

Someone working at the school stopped me & said that whenever she saw DD1,she was beaming..I'm glad,I had her name down there before we moved back to the village,as I'd attended the same school & loved every minute of it.
