I think the idea is that anyone could run the programme - provided they are keen.
It's nice to see the website aimed more specifically at teachers now IYSWIM (it started out very much as parent/retired-teacher power, if I recall), but realistically a lot of schools can only offer it at club level.
I have contacted Barbara Bell to find out more. They offer training days for only £40

That's exactly what dd did for her first year (Yr. 5) studying Latin bossykate - they went to visit Lullingstone villa - and this year (6) they have been streamed.

blu plenty of ops to go on "roman" outings nearish london - not to mention the large exhibition of roman finds at the museum of london.

Marina · 11/09/2007 13:04

Lullingstone, Blu (conveniently situated next to the Darenth for paddling afterwards)
Minimus is set at Vindolanda

bossykate · 11/09/2007 13:05

or the collaborationist atrebates...

Marina · 11/09/2007 13:05

bk, The Glory that was Rome is done in Yr 4 I believe.
By a huge coincidence, ds has just started Yr 4

Marina · 11/09/2007 13:06

My hall of residence in France was on one end of the rue des Atrebates, bk - I felt sullied

bossykate · 11/09/2007 13:09

yeah, the gauls adapted pretty readily after the siege of alesia was broken, for all that asterix propaganda

just read suite francaise, considering the fate of the author, she does paint a rather charming picture of how the french and germans all got on rather well together during the occupation Shock

bossykate · 11/09/2007 13:09

tis not a link btw - just an anomaly caused by too many [ & ]

Blu · 11/09/2007 13:11

BK, Yes, but Northumberland is very wonderful. I have a Latin O level and Enhanced CRB disclosure should you and Marina wish me to come to Rome as a helper / teaching assistant.

bossykate · 11/09/2007 13:12

i'd love to go to vindolanda. and to rome. and palmyra. and leptis magna. and all the rest!

Blu · 11/09/2007 13:13

A research trip...before the children join the class....

Marina · 11/09/2007 13:14

Siracusa
Piazza Armerina
We need a fact-finding mission to the Bay of Naples and Sicily and we need it now
I know Northumberland is beautiful, Blu...but....

bossykate · 11/09/2007 13:14

lol my kids are totally sick of me saying "ooh, ooh, look, look it's the hypocaust!!!"

Marina · 11/09/2007 13:15

LOLOLOL, ds too bk!

Cammelia · 11/09/2007 13:16

Pompeii definitely a must for any young Latin scholar

Hallgerda · 11/09/2007 13:37

Another Roman villa not far from South London. It's rather smaller than Lullingstone, but conveniently close to Orpington Station. I think it closes for the winter, though, so I'd check opening times.

(Looks like DS1 might be off to Pompeii amongst other places this Easter. I'm very )

Blu · 11/09/2007 14:01

Orpington?
Sicily, yes, a place I went to when walking round Crete, where ancient shepherds had used all the stone from a Roman temple to make mad shepherd huts, Pompeii, Bay of Naples, Yes. But do they even sell Limoncello in Orpington?

RosaLuxembourg · 11/09/2007 14:26

Great to find this thread. I am hoping to set up a Latin afterschool club at our school through the Primary Latin Project. I have A-level Latin, but anyone with enthusiasm can do it, prior knowledge not essential. I think the materials will cost about £150 but you can get a grant from the PLP for half of it, I'm hoping the PTA will spring for the other half.
My DD1 is in year 6 and she and lots of her friends are interested - largely because of Caroline Lawrence. The Minimus Mouse books are great and the whole thing is designed to be fun.
Link is here if it hasn't been posted already.

Marina · 11/09/2007 14:28

Thanks for posting the link Rosa
I am guessing that you will not travel up for the London training day in November, though? I think they offer them nearer too.

Marina · 11/09/2007 14:29

Orpington, I know from bitter experience, is much more a W*kd sort of place, sadly
But Crofton RV is lovely

RosaLuxembourg · 11/09/2007 14:30

No the Bristol one is better for me, Marina.
