Do I have enough school uniform?

WhiteCatRedCollar · 27/07/2019 13:42

DD starts in September. She currently goes to a private Nursery which has a uniform jumper for preschool which I pair with skirts, and socks/tights so she’s used to uniform.

She does 3 days at a Nursery and she doesn’t have quite enough uniform with two sets. Some weeks she can manage her 3 days in 1 uniform, and others she could do with a 3rd set. So I’ve doubled the amount for school does this sound ok?

Uniform:
4 skirts
1 school trousers
4 polo shirts (2 with logo, 2 without)
4 jumpers (2 with logo, 2 without – she won’t wear cardigans)
10 pairs of socks (5 white, 5 grey)
10 pairs of tights (4 grey, 3 white and 3 navy)
1 pair school shoes
1 pair wellies
1 coat

PE:
2 short sleeved T-shirts
2 long sleeved T-shirts
1 tracksuit jacket
2 pairs of joggers
2 pairs of shorts
Swimming Costume
1 poncho towel (recommended we get one by school)
1 pair trainers
1 pair plimsoles

Optional items:
1 school bobble hat
1 school cap
(she insisted she needed both Hmm)

Will I have enough? And if not which items do I need more of? She has 2 sets of PE uniform because if she has a toileting accident they’re changed into their PE kits.

A bit ott! We only ever had 2 skirts, 6 tops/blouses, 2 jumpers/cardigan. I doubt they will ever need more than one set of Pe stuff, even assuming they actually change initially.

Cuppa12345 · 27/07/2019 13:54

Yes, it seems more than enough!

RedSkyLastNight · 27/07/2019 13:57

That's probably enough for 2 children :)

Assuming you will be washing at least every weekend, you really only need 3-4 tops, 2 skirts/trousers and 1-2 jumpers. then just enough socks/tights for 1 pair a day. Nobody expects a Reception age child to go in looking pristine every day.

Equally 1 set of PE stuff should be plenty (unless she is particularly prone to toileting accidents).

Elisheva · 27/07/2019 13:59

I would get two more polo shirts so she can have a clean one each day without having to do a midweek wash.
Does she have to have trainers and plimsolls for PE?

Her0utdoors · 27/07/2019 14:00

That sounds ample! I didn't do a whites wash before school uniform nesicitated it, so I buy 6 polo shirts so I only have to wash one load of whites a week. 'Luckily' dd's school is pretty crappy so we don't have to worry about much pe kit of any swimming stuff or hats.

WhiteCatRedCollar · 27/07/2019 14:00

She's only just toilet trained (as in last few months) due to SN so expecting a fair few.

I don't have a dryer or outside drying space so can only wash clothes every other day.

Does she have to have trainers and plimsolls for PE?

Yes says trainers for Forest School and Outdoor PE, and plimsoles for inside PE and when they're using the hall for assembly.

I would say you have loads, but one tip I learned is to have a spare set in a bigger size, you only use it in emergencies and if not used you have it for the next year.

megletthesecond · 27/07/2019 14:05

I'd get a couple more plain polo shirts. Mine had a couple beyond saving in the early weeks of reception.

TeenTimesTwo · 27/07/2019 14:05

Why all the different colours for tights and socks?
If she is still having toilet accidents I'd not use the tights at all. Stick with skits or trousers.

DD had from Reception

  • 1 jumper & 1 cardigan
  • 2 polo shirts
  • 1 skirt & 1 pair of trousers
  • 2 summer dresses
WhiteCatRedCollar · 27/07/2019 14:07

Why all the different colours for tights and socks?

Because the school uniform list says we can have socks or tights in white, grey or navy as long as they're all one colour and I like a bit of variety.

My ds school is quite outdoorsy with a field and woods and rarely keep the kids in. He gets muddy most days. I have five trousers, five polos and five jumpers. Everything washed Friday night.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/07/2019 14:13

Do they need swimwear in reception?
2 more polo shirts then that should be plenty
If you find it isn't it's easy enough to get more.

MyCatDrinksFlatWhites · 27/07/2019 14:14

We've had a dry run of this with nursery and are planning on 5 polo shirts, 3 jumpers and 3 pairs of trousers. Plus 5 pairs socks and one PE kit.

MyCatDrinksFlatWhites · 27/07/2019 14:14

Only 2 jumpers requires too much mid-week sponging for my liking Grin.

WhiteCatRedCollar · 27/07/2019 14:16

Do they need swimwear in reception?

The local high school (as in less than a mile from primary) has a swimming pool and all the kids from Reception to Year 6 from the local primaries are taken. Autumn Term for YR and Y2, Spring for Y1, Y3 and Y4-6.

Sounds like you're good to go.

MyDcAreMarvel · 27/07/2019 14:19

That’s far too much is this a reverse re over spending?

myself2020 · 27/07/2019 14:20

Depends on the school. i have (boy going into year 2)

  • 5 pairs of trousers (plus 2 spares)
-5 shirts (plus 3 spares)
  • 3 jumpers
  • 5 pairs of socks
  • 2 complete PE kits (shorts, top, midlayer, tracksuit bottoms, tracksuit jacket)
And in the previous years we needed it all - PE 3 times a week, plus swimming and outdoor play
Cotswoldmama · 27/07/2019 14:39

That's loads I have half that! My son wears it until it's dirty then it's washed if I'm lucky trousers might last 4 days. In winter polo shirts are usually covered with a jumper so don't get dirty. Jumpers and sweatshirts generally are dirty after a couple of days but 3 is probably enough. PE kits stays at school and just comes home during holidays for a wash so only 1 of each item is needed.

poopypants · 27/07/2019 14:40

She won't need 4 skirts + 1 trouser and she won't need 4 jumpers. 3 bottoms (skirts/trousers) are more than enough. Probably only 2 really needed. Then 2 jumpers at most. Most people will have only 1.

They are always mostly synthetic even if they look like wool so if a skirt or jumper gets fouled, it will be washed and dried in no time do only really need one back up.

What does this even mean? Do you actually mean 7 trousers and 8 shirts? Why say 5+2 and 5+3?

Why does he mess his trousers so badly every day?

Bwekfusth · 27/07/2019 14:44

Just got my boys uniforms. 3 overpriced logo'd jumpers each, 5 polos each as they come in a pack of 5 from Asda, 4 pairs trousers each, and one pair of P.E shorts and 1 P.E T-shirt each. And that came to over £100. Yet to get shoes, which will cost a fortune.

Nicpem1982 · 27/07/2019 14:46

My dds school is also out doorsy and I don't like to iron so I have 2 weeks worth of uniform 6 pinafores, 6 blouses, 3 ties, 6 tights 10 socks 2 leggings, 4 polo shirts the only exception is the school logo cardis 3 cardigans and 2 hoodies as they'll wash on a friday and dry in hangers so no ironing. Her waterproofs, wellies and hat and gloves will stay at school in her cubby

Chilledout11 · 27/07/2019 14:50

I have 2 dc

Each have 2 shirts and 2 polo shirts
3 pairs of trousers and 4 jumpers

Its absolutely loads as I do as quick wash most evenings but I get them cheaply and none of them look worn by the end of the year.
