Do I have enough school uniform?

WhiteCatRedCollar · 27/07/2019 13:42

DD starts in September. She currently goes to a private Nursery which has a uniform jumper for preschool which I pair with skirts, and socks/tights so she’s used to uniform.

She does 3 days at a Nursery and she doesn’t have quite enough uniform with two sets. Some weeks she can manage her 3 days in 1 uniform, and others she could do with a 3rd set. So I’ve doubled the amount for school does this sound ok?

Uniform:
4 skirts
1 school trousers
4 polo shirts (2 with logo, 2 without)
4 jumpers (2 with logo, 2 without – she won’t wear cardigans)
10 pairs of socks (5 white, 5 grey)
10 pairs of tights (4 grey, 3 white and 3 navy)
1 pair school shoes
1 pair wellies
1 coat

PE:
2 short sleeved T-shirts
2 long sleeved T-shirts
1 tracksuit jacket
2 pairs of joggers
2 pairs of shorts
Swimming Costume
1 poncho towel (recommended we get one by school)
1 pair trainers
1 pair plimsoles

Optional items:
1 school bobble hat
1 school cap
(she insisted she needed both Hmm)

Will I have enough? And if not which items do I need more of? She has 2 sets of PE uniform because if she has a toileting accident they’re changed into their PE kits.

@poopypants yes, spares are for ripped knees etc. its a sporty/outdoorsy school. they play outside on the fix (as they should!) so stuff is covered in mud come afternoon.

RainOrSun · 27/07/2019 14:57

Depends on how messy your child is, and how much mid week washing /drying you can achieve.
5 pairs of trousers, plus 6 polos here - they came in packs of 3. I have a messy child, and cant guarantee to get stuff dry overnight. My jumper levels isnt relevent, as they are hardly ever worn. Probably 3 or 4 tho if in the UK.
One set of pe, but understand your second set.
Trousers come home with grass stains, lunch, paint, glue. Rare we get a second day out of anything.

dementedma · 27/07/2019 14:59

Blimey, some of you have loads of stuff.
7 shirts and 8 pairs of trousers for one child? Wonder how many he will get through during his school life...

myself2020 · 27/07/2019 15:05

@dementedma over the last two years, i’ve put 4-5 longsleeved shirts and 3-4 pairs if trousers in the attic for his younger brother to wear. the other trousers had ripped knees and became shorts for summer. stained long sleeved shirts become painting aprons, shortsleeved ones cleaning rags (i don’t buy polyester).

notso · 27/07/2019 15:19

I buy two bottoms, two jumpers, 5 shirts/polo tops, one PE kit.
I hate school uniform so buy the bare minimum.

For ds who is going uo from reception to yr 1 I've got

5 short sleeved shirts
2 pairs trousers (I do more dark washing than whites)
10 pairs of socks
Shoes
Coat
School bag

ChihuahuaMummy1 · 27/07/2019 15:22

And 3 jumpers

TeenTimesTwo · 27/07/2019 15:22

Parents overbuying new for reception is why our PTA uniform sales always had loads in size 5-6 looking brand new, and then hardly anything in larger sizes.

coconuttelegraph · 27/07/2019 15:26

That's an awful lot of PE stuff, is there a reason you need so much?

Are you able to wash during the week, you have more for one child than I ever had for all mine added togther. Nowadays you can buy uniform all year round I really wouldn't worry about having enough a couple of days after the schools have broken up.

sjb2102 · 27/07/2019 15:32

I'd say you've overdone it with the socks and tights. By Christmas you'll be buying more anyways 🤣 my lad who's starting reception in September has
4 polo shirts
4 trousers
2 non-logo jumpers
Shoes and wellies (as instructed)
PE kits x 2 (shorts came in 2)
Hea
Currently no logo jumper but considering up to 3. Might get just 1 til Christmas.

My eldest has 4 sets and I wash it on a Wednesday. (Used to be 3 sets but when I got last years clothes every came in 2s 🤷)

Yubaba · 27/07/2019 15:32

My dc have clean uniform every day, the primary school has a forest school and are outside every day so they end up filthy.
I buy uniform in 2 packs so they have 6 sets each, DD at high school has 2 skirts, 1 blazer and 6 shirts.

notso · 27/07/2019 15:34

Have you checked with the PE stuff mine in Primary leave the kit in school. It only comes home in holidays or before a special event.

ourkidmolly · 27/07/2019 16:11

Is this a private school? What's with all the PE kit doubling over?

Korvalscat · 27/07/2019 16:43

In YR Dgs had 4 pairs of trousers - usually managed to keep 1 pair clean from mud and dirt. 5 polo shirts and 3 sweatshirts. In year 1 the number of sweatshirts was increased to 4 as he rarely managed to keep a sweatshirt clean - if it wasn't paint or pen, it was yoghurt or some sort of sauce/gravy and often a combination of some or all of those plus mud/dirt if he didn't use his coat. He was less clumsy towards the end of year one so most weeks he was wearing trousers for more than one day and one or two of the sweatshirts were wearable for a second day each week.
PE kit, white t-shirts and black shorts come in packs of 2, so he has a set at home and a set at school which are swapped over at half-term so all get worn equally.
He started off with 10 pairs of socks but as the socks shrunk slightly in the wash and his feet grew a size and a half by February he had to have new socks as well and new plimsolls.
Your list sounds fine to me OP and should avoid the need for a mid-week wash.

meowcatmeow · 27/07/2019 16:50

This summer term, my DS has had two pairs of shorts and two polo shirts. We did start with 2 sweatshirts but he lost one...and then it got warm and he didn't want to wear one.
His PE kit hasn't been home since half term. School send home PE kits each half term.

PantsyMcPantsface · 27/07/2019 16:53

I have 4 cardigans, two pinafores (the cardigans tend to get forgotten in class a couple of times a week so I need more - neither of mine have managed to forget their pinafores... yet), two pairs of trousers (tend to wear them when it's cold or PE day as one has motor skills problems) and a 5 pack of polo shirts.

I hate washing though and can be a laundry slattern. DD2 also gets more food on her than in her mouth, and paint misses the paper and lands on her... at one point last year she managed to miss the whiteboard with her pen and did her phonics work half on her leg.

Oh yeah and about 6000 pairs of gloves and you'll still be scraping around sending them in in random odd ones by the end of the winter. Seriously - buy the entire gloves reduced section when spring starts to come around ready for the next year - you'll thank me for it!

Sounds a lot but I buy the 2 pack cardigans for like £6 from Asda and I know from bitter experience that by the end of the year we'll be running on the short side of them!

bookmum08 · 27/07/2019 17:12

Don't put her in tights if she is still having toilet issues. Seriously don't. Speaking from experience (both my daughter and me)
(me - a very long time ago - honestly!)

RubberTreePlant · 27/07/2019 17:16

Plenty. Probably exactly right considering SN and limited drying facilities.

I think the white tights will be in the bin before long, but other than that, it sounds perfect.

ithinkiammelting · 27/07/2019 17:16

It may be too much, maybe not. It depends on how much of it gets lost or nicked. In the first few weeks of Sept it can be very warm and they take their jumpers off. Some other children help themselves to someone else's by mistake and new jumpers in particular tend not to get returned.

Sirzy · 27/07/2019 17:17

If you know there is a risk of accidents instead of spare PE kit I would put a bag in her pe bag containing clean underwear, clean skirt and a pack of wipes with a bag to put wet things in. Make sure staff know it’s there. Much nicer for her than being sat in PE kit

Justtrying · 27/07/2019 17:19

Sounds plenty. I had 5 sets of uniform and 2 of pe kit for reception as I work shifts and am sometimes away for 5 days, this way DH didn't have to stress if things were mucky midweek. Now DD is in juniors we still have 5 shirts but only 3 skirts and one set of pe kit, except polos as they are white and I prefer get to have a clean one each pe lesson( 3 times a week and they bring kit home mid week). Top tip get DD used to putting muddy trainers/ shoes in a separate bag before putting in pe kit as it keeps everything else cleaner.

Chocolatedaim · 27/07/2019 17:20

Goodness that’s a lot more than me, although having read your posts OP I appreciate why.
All I have for my DD ;

4 polo shirts
2 pinafores
2 summer dresses
1 logo sweatshirt
1 logo cardigan

Chocolatedaim · 27/07/2019 17:20

Oh and one lot of PE stuff

Justtrying · 27/07/2019 17:22

We also had a little bag with clean knickers, socks and wipes plus plastic bag for any accidents, which happen with all infant children not just those with sn, so don't worry.
