KS1 SATS-do parents get given their children’s scores?

DD has a ‘friend’ whose mother is unbelievably competitive about everything they do. I have zero interest in taking part in this. DD is so far pretty much unaware of the SATs as anything other than a standard classroom activity-they’ve done one paper so far and it was done very casually, so she wasn’t at all fussed. I’m very happy about this as I think they’re ridiculous anyway and don’t want her to be stressed about them. I’m personally more interested in her teacher’s assessment of how she’s doing anyway.

Do parents get given their children’s scores? I know this friend’s mother is going to want to compare. I don’t want to, and I also don’t particularly want DD being asked how she did by this friend. If it happens, I just won’t engage, and will encourage DD not to either, but I’m kind of hoping that the school just won’t tell us the results. Is that likely?

My ds was in Y2 last year and his school didn't give them out unless the parent requested them. I requested the results and we never told Dd we got them.

Whatsallthisaboutthen · 15/05/2019 16:06

Oh good! I hope that’s the norm!

Legally, schools are supposed to inform you. They normally come out with end of year reports.

Pascha · 15/05/2019 16:14

They were included as part of the end of year report for ds1. I never spoke about them to another parent. If ihad been asked I would like to think I'd have just been honest and say I don't discuss my kids school stuff - which is true, it's nobodies business but his and ours.

Whatsallthisaboutthen · 15/05/2019 16:15

Hmm, bugger. Well, maybe it’ll be the last day of term and she’ll have forgotten about it by September 😬

We've been told we'll get a statement:

Working towards
At expected
Working in greater depth

but if we want the actual score we have to ask.

AustrianSnow · 15/05/2019 16:22

There’s no legal requirement to give you the results and most schools don’t. You do have a right to the scores if you ask for them. You will automatically be told Working Towards, expected or greater depth standard.

PantsyMcPantsface · 15/05/2019 17:03

If we don't get told I'll be asking - purely because mine is absolutely dead on the borderline between expected and greater depth and I'll be interested to know how far on either way she goes with it. Not for any other reason than my own personal curiosity though - sod putting in the effort to brag on the playground!

MrsKCastle · 15/05/2019 17:16

It's up to the individual school how they do it. Some schools will give the actual marks, some will give the scaled scores. Obviously they have to say if the child is working towards, at expected levels or at greater depth.

Schools have a statutory responsibility to communicate results.

GinUp · 15/05/2019 17:55

Our school doesn't give scores for the KS1 SATs papers.

They just tell you in the final school report whether or not your child has reached the expected standard.

Popfan · 15/05/2019 17:58

You are told where your child is against age related expectations. You may not get the test scores as they are only one part of the teacher assessment. A child for example may score at an expected level on the test but their teacher can decide with other evidence based on the child's attainment day to day in the classroom that they are not expected or are greater depth. The test supports this judgement. This is different to Y6 Sats where the score on the test is the only measure (apart from writing whuch is teacher assessed). The school doesn't legally have to give test scores just the overall assessment.

Maryann1975 · 15/05/2019 18:01

We didn’t get the results last year for dd in ks1. This shows me that they don’t matter to the children.

Our year 6 child at a different school did get the results. This shows me that these matter more. However much the school tell me they don’t matter, if the children find out the results, it matters how they do. If you don’t tell them it doesn’t matter.

I know where the teacher thinks they are and that is far more important to me at this stage and it never even occurred to me to ask the school how she did.

Feenie · 15/05/2019 18:03

Schools have a statutory responsibility to communicate results.

Not of the tests, they don't - although they have to it a parent asks.

They have a statutory responsibility to report the teacher assessment, of which the tests are a very small part.

GU24Mum · 15/05/2019 18:03

We got told. Some people decided it was a good idea to post the score and their thoughts about it on Facebook. I didn't!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 15/05/2019 18:04

Schools have a statutory responsibility to communicate results.

Yes, but only the results of the teacher assessment. There’s no statutory responsibility to give the test score unless a parent asks for the result.

KS1 SATS-do parents get given their children’s scores?
sirfredfredgeorge · 16/05/2019 08:40

Our school didn't give back the papers, what they did do though is the expected thing to me of debriefing the students themselves on how they did on the papers. So the kids knew what they got wrong / right same as any other piece of work, why would schools not do that for these pieces of work?

my2bundles · 16/05/2019 09:00

If they do just don't engage with her. I've never discussed scores, reading levels etc with other parents. I often see the frustration on certain faces when I won't engage in such nonsense 😂

Maldives2006 · 16/05/2019 09:45

My child is in Year 6 and no the SATS really do not matter!! Think of them as a screening all they do is show how the teacher has taught the content and that is it.

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 16/05/2019 09:48

Our school believe the KS1 SATS aren't worth a damn so the children never even know they're happening and the results aren't given out.

The class teacher's assessment is all that matters.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 16/05/2019 10:08

I believe they just have to state the "met expected" or didn't etc but if you want the actual scores you would have to request them. one of my kids was so sure she had done really well she went and asked the teacher for them herself and came out with them written on a bit of paper by the teacher. most pleased with herself as she had indeed done very well.

banskuwansku · 16/05/2019 14:19

We get the scores at the end of year report. I always say that kids are doing fine or the results were fine if someone asks.
