very sad if this is a genuine op

sep1712 · 18/07/2007 16:16

enid= can you just explain why having a good boast and brag about your child is sad?
It much better than moaning isn't it. The thread was put on in a light hearted way. not as a competion!

competition

Twinkie1 · 18/07/2007 16:35

All 3s for DD and she has a reading age of 10.6 although she was 6.10 when she was tested (tested because moving school apparently!) we are really proud of her after all the shit she has gone through in her relatively short life!!

Enid · 18/07/2007 16:46

My dd1 could have got 1s for all I know as I chucked them in the bin

guess what

she is still amazingly bright and funny and sweet

no need for a test result here to tell me that

UnquietDad · 18/07/2007 16:46

Our head-teacher made it clear in an informal chat with me that she thinks some schools chuck the 3s about willy-nilly, and that they don't really look closely at the actual criteria for getting a 3. If you look at them - she showed us the sheet - you'll see that they are actually pretty demanding.

Also, if lots of kids get 3s at Year 2, this leaves them nowhere to go but down. If a school wants to show Value Added, they are better off under-marking at KS1, so that they can show it is at least partly the school, rather than just the child's natural ability, which has got them to a Level 5 by the time they leave.

Not rocket science!

Enid · 18/07/2007 16:47

so dont tell me

you went in to see why your child didnt get 3's

honestly SATS bring out the worst in people

UnquietDad · 18/07/2007 16:48

Who said that, Enid?

lljkk · 18/07/2007 17:02

OOh, unquietDad, you trying to court controversary? Suggest anyone's child is not as bright as their report suggests? Dangerous territory....

Actually, as I wrote here, our school seems to have a lot fewer 3s than national. Maybe to be expected since it's a very "average" school in terms of intake and league table results.

DS got all 2as and 2bs. I'm happy with that. This from a child who had no interest in writing, reading or drawing before he started school, and has to have arm twisted to do homework.

UnquietDad · 18/07/2007 17:06

I see I've probably annoyed a lot of people on here. It makes sense, though, doesn't it? Lots of 3s just means you HAVE to keep the standards up, whereas a few 2s liberally sprinkled in - when you know the kid is actually capable of a 3 - and it means you can show progression by Y6.

And Enid, my chat with the head was informal, as I said, and before the results came out. So nurrr.

fsmail · 18/07/2007 17:10

My DS got all twos as well but again no interest in reading or writing until this year. The first time he did a paper at the beginning of the year, he just sat there and wrote nothing for two hours, so his progression over the year has been remarkable. Now he sits and reads all his dinosaur books. That was the only thing that persuaded him to read. If he carries on like this he will be up to 5 in no time!

Enid · 18/07/2007 17:14

mine went up to 11

Pan · 18/07/2007 17:41

789 here, across the board..and STILL room for improvement..they ARE a harsh lot round here...,

pigsinmud · 18/07/2007 18:39

Unquietdad - my ds2's teacher said he was borderline 2a/3 for writing - it was sent off (where I'm not sure?) and came back as a 3. It's not just down to the school to make up the scores. My ds1 got one 3 and the rest were 2s - I was still really proud of him. I couldn't give a stuff about sats results, however when ds2's teacher handed me the scores at parents evening of course I was pleased with him. He works really hard. He was the only child to have all 3s in his school and your comment irritated me. I've mentioned it to no-one in real life as we don't discuss that sort of thing.
If your child gets a distinction in a music exam, it seems acceptable to tell people about it and yet mention academic success and it's frowned upon.

Enid, I really hope I have the good sense to do the same next year when my daughter takes her SATS. Her teachers downplay them as much as possible, but her current teacher was saying how damn pointless they are to him. I find the whole idea of grading seven year olds pretty repellant.

Gobbledigook · 18/07/2007 21:40

What's wrong with being proud of academic achievement anyway? It doesn't mean people think it's the be all and end all, but there is no reason not to feel pride if your child does well.

Why is that it it's OK to shout about sporting or musical ability, but not academic ability? I don't get it.

bookwormtailmum · 18/07/2007 22:01

DD got 2a for reading, 2 for science, 2 for English overall and 2c for maths. One Mum complained since her ds didn't get a 3a for his maths . I'm just glad my dd got a 2a in something. Oddly enough her school got 100% in English and Science but 97% in maths for level 2 achievements - hope it wasn't my dd dragging down the total .

CristinaTheAstonishing · 19/07/2007 00:46

DS wasn't assessed at Science, and English was separate, Reading and Writing and no overall level. Why is there this difference between schools? I thought all papers were sent away for marking, not done in-house.

Enid · 19/07/2007 09:49

mi it has been so liberating

and of course now its the end of term noone really gives a toss anymore so it was all pointless

she got a lovely report with the shock news that she is good at maths . So thats all fine by me.

coffeepot · 19/07/2007 10:33

I?m also amazed at how different it all is. We had separate five separate marks for yr 2 -speaking and listening, reading, writing, maths and science.

And Enid, our SAT results were on the school report, not separate, so we couldn?t throw them away without throwing away the whole report ? which we had to sign to say we had read.

lljkk · 19/07/2007 10:51

But is there to "brag" about? That child won genetic lottery? That you provided a supportive upbringing? That child lacks SN?

I can understand saying you're "over the moon", etc. Fair enough to be delighted if child is doing well -- even if results are "just" a 1c for a child with SN.

coffeepot · 19/07/2007 11:07

Might have thrown them away if I could though - you're right that the report tells us all we need to know at this stage.

sep1712 · 19/07/2007 21:41

I didn't really find my report very helpful actually. We are on our fourth teacher this year so she didn't really know the children very well. The report was all cut and paste. My sister, whos a teacher, read it and said it was the most uninformative report she had ever seen. So the only way i knew what my DS was doing at school was through the results.

What is wrong with people on here. We are only chatting about a common interest. If your not interested in the subject why even give your time away to read a light hearted thread???

my dd3 was all average except above avrage for reading. so i am very proud and particularly amazed since she was soo hard to convince!
