DS1 is starting school in september (surely there has been a mistake??) and so the great wide uniform hunt is on. I want cheap but lasting a normal amount of time, pref adjustable waisted trousers, plain polo shirts (i already have the branded stuff form the school)

Come all you hardened parents of school children, you must know some places by now!

Also, have had it on recommendation that simplystuck is good for name tags so went ahead and ordered their starter pack. ANything i should know know about labels before i have to start sewing and sticking?

Don't want to appear rude, but have you searched existing threads? It's just that this has been discussed at length a few times in the last few weeks, so you may find nobody bothers to reply - sorry!

Kbear · 12/07/2007 12:34

M&S for polo shirts and trousers, Adams trousers also good.

M&S school shoes - can recommend - DS grew out of them before they got scuffed up. Very sturdy!

MumOfSlytherinsMonsters · 12/07/2007 12:37

oooh in the last few weeks? i knew there would be old threads but hadn't seen any recently so (wrongly) thought there were no recent ones.

Will go search now

southeastastra · 12/07/2007 12:40

ChipButty · 12/07/2007 12:42

Asda - cheap but durable! Ordered Iron on labels via Woolies and they have been great.

katelyle · 12/07/2007 12:46

No no no no, this is not the right time to buy uniform!!!!!! This is the time to buy sandals and shorts and icecream! The proper time to buy school unifi=orm is the first week of September. I thought everybody knew that. Actually, I know they do, because there's never any left when i go on September 4th. Everyone else obviously goes on September 3rd.

MumOfSlytherinsMonsters · 12/07/2007 12:52

i need it sooner rather than later as he starts on september 4th and want to have time to return if needs be!

i did look around for similar threads in this subject and only came across one and that was girls uniform so full of skirts and cardigans!

Well I've been thinking about this too.
Is there a problem with supermarket stuff? (other than my usual loathing of Tesco) Does it fall apart too quickly?

Gingerbear · 12/07/2007 12:56

lol katelyle.
I dunno, but if anyone comes across a burgundy pinafore age 5-6 on their searches, please let me know.

PeachesMcLean · 12/07/2007 12:56

And does anyone else cringe when they think of grey nylonny school trousers. I haven't got close enough to touch any so far but don't want to think of DS wearing these five days a week. Euch.

MumOfSlytherinsMonsters · 12/07/2007 13:00

burgandy pinafore..., they are all grey here. what an unusual colour!

I am having the same issue with trousers and their nylon-ness peaches (have u been having a RL? not 'seen' you for a while).

I like Tesco's school trousers. They have adjustable waists and so will even fit my ultra-skinny ds1.

The white polo shirts generally seem to stain quite easily so I now avoid the more expensive ones and get the cheaper ones from Asda.

I usually write names directly on to the labels so can't really advise about name tags.

Gingerbear · 12/07/2007 13:18

tell me about it! Why they can't just have burgundy cardis and jumpers I don't know.

Legacy · 12/07/2007 13:22

M&S sold out of age 5 wool mix trousers already!

PeachesMcLean · 12/07/2007 13:24

Not sure we'll be going for white polo shirts. The thought of having to keep them white all year is beyond me. Saw a bunch of kids the other evening wearing distincly grey shirts. Grim.

Hi MoM - I tried out a new wig and dark glasses for a while but got bored and came back as myself.

A recent thread here

There are no universally agreed answers!

ChippyMinton · 12/07/2007 13:42

Get yourself down to M&S before the '3 for 2 offer' ends. Order two pairs of the £7 adjustable waist trousers and a pack of polo shirts (sorry, can't advise on which ones as DS has 'proper' shirts). Save your energy for the late august shoe/plimsoll buying expedition.

Simplystuck sticky labels are fine, have you the clear shoe stickers to put over them?
I have Cash's woven tapes for clothes but i like sewing

Buy a huge pack of identical socks so you don't have to label them or spend hours hunting for odd ones.

Legacy · 12/07/2007 14:29

Mumsnet used to have a discount with Easy2name nametapes - I still have it stored try it for 10% off! try code mums-e2n at check out!

wheresmysuntan · 12/07/2007 17:21

Matalan currently have 3 for 2 on their school stuff. I bought cotton polo shirts last September for my dd and they have washed very well. However, I thought the quality of the skirt I bought very poor.

whiskersonkittens · 12/07/2007 23:47

I am on a hunt for a cotton, velcro fastening art overall - anyone know where I can get one please?

Legacy · 13/07/2007 10:33

Does it have to be cotton? John Lewis do the Velcro slightly waterproof ones?

frogs · 13/07/2007 11:40

Can very highly recommend the John Lewis water-resistent velcro fastening overalls -- one of the best uses for £9 I can think of.

LindzDelirium · 13/07/2007 13:45

If you don't mind last seasons styles Woolworths are selling off loads of grey and black skirts and trousers in their sale.

whiskersonkittens · 13/07/2007 22:36

Apparantly it does have to be cotton
