Girls' school uniform

DD(7) has to wear summer dresses after Easter but is worried about showing her underwear (playground has a climbing frame and a rope-swing where they all seem to like hanging upside down). I don't really want to put her in tights because they will be uncomfortable on hot days / when running around. She normally wears trousers in winter but summer uniform shorts are for boys only apparently (at this point I don't want to make her wear them anyway just to make a point!). Is there anything she can wear under her dress which will cover underwear but won't show beneath the hemline of her dress?

I was thinking cycling shorts but searched online and they all look a bit too long in the leg...

Grateful for any recommendations!! Smile

Decent coverage pants or short style/pants should do the trick. I can’t imagine anything worse than cycling shorts over pants in hot weather. Otherwise you can get playsuits in the gingham print with zip front. We’ve had some from Asda before.

Sainsburys had Culottes wouodnthat work?

Wavingwhiledrowning · 25/03/2019 19:35

Hmm. The link looks a little strange. Sorry. They're in M&S - search for "2 Pack Girls' Cotton Shorts with Stretch"

beanhunter · 25/03/2019 19:35

Last year most supermarkets had playsuits. Looked like dresses but actually shorts on bottom half. More of a faff for going to the loo though.

She needs modesty shorts - next sell packs of 3 in black or grey. www.next.co.uk/g524515s9#706733

my girls wear cotton cycling shirts in navy or black from Sainsbury's or Asda.

QueenofCBA · 25/03/2019 22:01

Do school really specify that girls have to wear dresses? Girls are allowed to wear shorts (like boys) or dresses. Most girls now wear shorts in the summer.

Thanks for the suggestions 🙂sainsburys ones didn't quite look right but I found some short style pants at Asda

M&S, Next and John Lewis (and others I'm sure) do the gingham jumpsuits, my girls switched to them last year and love them. More comfortable when it's hot than cycling shorts which they've worn in previous years.

My DD wears grey shorts. No faffy gingham here!

purpleme12 · 26/03/2019 08:05

There's some sites on Facebook I've seen selling shorts you can wear under school dresses they're the same colour and pattern as school summer dresses. You could search for them

TeenTimesTwo · 26/03/2019 08:15

As well as all the helpful suggestions above I would consider explaining the issue to school and asking can they EITHER relax uniform AND/OR anyone laughing at girls underwear should be told off. Furthermore lunchtime supervisors need to be told that 7yos accidentally showing underwear when playing is OK.

Girls should not have to wear an 'extra layer' in (hot) summer to stop them being laughed at / embarrassed because of the school uniform. Their uniform should be suitable for them to play in.

LetItGoToRuin · 26/03/2019 08:16

This girls' gingham playsuit from M&S should do the job. I'd be surprised if the supermarkets don't sell something similar as well.

Chilledout11 · 26/03/2019 08:24

They are gorgeous letitgo great idea.

Lara53 · 26/03/2019 16:06

Girls at the school where I teach pop their gym shorts underneath for break times

toomuchfaster · 26/03/2019 16:12

Tesco do the gingham playsuit too, I've bought several for DD after Easter.

rosydreams · 26/03/2019 16:26

Check that the play suit complies with your schools uniform policy. They aren’t allowed at any of the schools I’ve worked at...

bombaychef · 28/03/2019 23:42

Challenge challenge challenge why girls can't just wear shorts. Equality. Jump suits that some supermarkets sell are hideous to go to the toilets In for young girls. They end up wet from floor.
An RC school near us won't allow culottes. Skirts only. No trousers. Ridiculous.
Can you imagine if they said that to us as adults?
Tons of girls at our school wear grey shorts in summer.

anniehm · 28/03/2019 23:50

Cycling shorts (also sometimes listed as safety shorts) on eBay. Buy the Xs they come up tiny, my size 8 daughter wears large. They ship from China usually so order asap.

drspouse · 29/03/2019 22:22

Why does she have to wear dresses?

Chilver · 29/03/2019 22:26

Shorts here and if your school doesnt allow that, then challenge it.

Pp and 'modesty' shorts - dear god, their are 7 years old!! If THEY cant play swinging, upside down, tumbling srpund, then should all play be banned??!

Chilver · 29/03/2019 22:26
