Been informed it 3 times a week the kids are being held back.
The head teacher isnt helpful at all..its all about high scores for the school..no mufti days allowed..dont do comic relief . No school trips.
Yep you read right.
She only cares about keeping her 100% attendance.no kid is allowed to go under or the parents get letters

Informed by who? Is it the whole lunch hour? I can't imagine he reads for an hour 3 times a week so why does it take an hour to complete his work that was missed.
My son's school only did 1 trip per year, and not at all for 3 years, it's not a problem. Most schools get bashed for non uniform/charity days, they can't win. It sounds like you should look for a different school as this one clearly doesn't meet your requirements

Chutneygloss · 16/03/2019 20:41

I wouldn’t allow this at all and if I couldn’t stop it I’d move schools, and if they keep your child in from break for a total of 2 hours a week I would drop him into school 2 hours late every week until new school was found.

Write to the governors and the Lea. They might not know of such draconian practices.

Speak to the parents of other children, at 8 years old the children may not be telling their parents what’s going on.

Firstly I’d find out more details off his teacher. Are we talking an hour or 5 mins?

bigbluebus · 16/03/2019 20:44

Is this a state school or public school OP? I take children out of class for reading (as a volunteer) but each child gets between 5 and 10 mins so they should not have much work to catch up on - certainly not enough to be kept in at lunch time!

HomeMadeMadness · 16/03/2019 20:45

I would be checking if this is really happening. If it is it's completely insane and I'd be complaining and escalating as much as possible. If they're missing 5 minutes of their break it's not ideal but not a crises but their entire lunch break and afternoon playtime? That's ridiculous.

user789653241 · 16/03/2019 20:55

It just doesn't make sense, tbh. If everyone is taken out of class at some point, they must all miss out on class work as well?

MiniEggAddiction · 17/03/2019 13:44

I agree that obviously it's unacceptable for any child to regularly miss break and lunch times but I'd be shocked if that was what was actually happening. I'd arrange a meeting with the school and calmly ask what is actually going on.

MarchingFrogs · 17/03/2019 16:12

There is 5 other kids who have the same problem... but its my boy im worried about as he thinks hes done wrong.

Appreciating that your own child is your priority, but have you spoken to the parents of the other children to see what their take on the situation is / make a plan to approach the school as a group etc? Are the other 5 upset by this as well?

Do the other 9 children in the class not get taken out for reading, or do they just manage to catch up with the classwork that they've missed? Are children always taken out in the same order, so some always have more residual lesson time to complete their work and some very little? If this is the case, perhaps you could ask whether it would be possible for the order to varied.

typoqueen · 17/03/2019 16:22

i would double check as when my DD was being kept in to finish work it was literally for 5/10 minuets each time, so she still had plenty of time to eat and play but according to her it was all lunch time..

extrastrongmints · 17/03/2019 16:24

pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/131/1/183

break ("recess") is a "crucial and necessary component of a child’s development and, as such, it should not be withheld for punitive or academic reasons."

user789653241 · 17/03/2019 16:27

"There is 5 other kids who have the same problem... but its my boy im worried about as he thinks hes done wrong."

This gives me another question. Why only he thinks he's done wrong when there are 4 others?
Something is not really working if they have to take children out from class to do the reading, then asking them to finish their missed work during breaks.

But being angry and aggressive won't help your child.

EffYouSeeKaye · 17/03/2019 20:56

Really Hmm

If school is closed then pupils not attending isn’t unauthorised absence. If the head only cares about 100% attendance then they would actively avoid recording any unauthorised absence whatsoever.

If everyone is being taken out to read then the missed work applies equally to all. Therefore, in real terms, no missed work.

A teacher telling you that you gave up your rights when you enrolled your child? Okaay...

This certainly is the most unconventional school I have ever heard of. Perhaps consider moving your child to any other school where these things never happen?

LetItGoToRuin · 18/03/2019 13:08

I’m amazed that a child that’s ‘ahead’ in reading is being removed from the class three times per week in Y3 for 1:1 reading in a state school.

If I’m honest, I’m a little jealous too. My DD is also in Y3 and didn’t even get anything like this amount of 1:1 support in Reception, and I don’t think she’s read 1:1 with an adult at all this academic year unless it was for a 'reading age' test. I’m surprised there’s so much resource available in Y3 for 1:1 reading for the accomplished readers in state school.

If all of the children are getting three reading sessions per week, and only a few of them are needing to stay behind at breaktimes to catch up, it would suggest that the workload is not unreasonable.

I don’t think this is something to make a huge fuss over. A combination of the following would probably do it: explain to your DS that it’s not a punishment, suggest to him that he tries to work faster if possible to minimise the missed breaks, ask the school if he can bring work home to finish instead, ask the school to drop the reading sessions to one or two per week.

Pennell80 · 18/03/2019 14:25

Ok ladies and gents...ive been into the school and spoken to the head teacher about my concerns...ive been told that i dont have a say in the school at all and they can do what they want with the children.
Explained that if he hasn't finished his work maybe worth taking another child that has. But no.that didnt help.
So weve filled out the forms and changing schools for him.
Ive spoken to the new school head teacher and she didn't agree what the current school is doing.

I'm not complaining about the reading at all..he loves reading.but I'm more concerned that he's kept in alot at lunch or break times

Ive also spoke to the head about the way the teacher spoke to me and she said in her own words...well that teacher wouldn't ever say that and i back him 100%... didnt even ask him if it was true..

So as from wednesday he will no longer attend this school and he will be home education until he joins his new on after school holidays.which hes excited about...

Im just shocked that not all schools aint like this but some are.
Us parents dont always get it right but we do fight for our children.

And they all lived happily ever after. 👍

Todaythiscouldbe · 18/03/2019 15:18

Good luck with the new school. I hope it offers exactly what you want, although I suspect it won't.

Pennell80 · 18/03/2019 16:44

Todaythiscouldbe.....i totally get what you say and not every school is perfect but ive spoken to them about my concerns and they back me 100%.. they dont agree what the school now is doing..they are helping me with this..

OP posts:
Todaythiscouldbe · 18/03/2019 17:14

They are at the moment. They only know what you have told them which, as many people have said, just doesn't add up

Pennell80 · 18/03/2019 17:17

I can only tell you what i know..
Confused myself what the school is at. Spoke to my neighbour and her son takes his work home to finish.so why cant mine.He does his homework.but ive asked the school and getting nothing.this is why weve decided to move him.
We want a school that can look after our son not confuse it..

Also ive been so calm through this, other parents said they wouldnt be so calm.i dont like to argue but willing to talk and listen.

strathmore · 19/03/2019 20:57

What home education provision are you putting in place?

Have you been allocated a place at the new school? If so why can't he start this week? there is no need to wait until after the holidays if a place is available.

ScarletBitch · 19/03/2019 21:02

Why are you making it sound like he is being punished? It is not a detention is it? They take him out of class to give him 1-1 reading, then expect him to catch up on missed work. Would you rather he went through life not being able to read and write just because you think playtime is more important?

Pennell80 · 19/03/2019 22:54

Scarletbitch.

Im up for his reading and is well ahead on that.
He also reads at home with me and his dad. Thats not what im getting at. He is taken out of class for reading but if his class work isnt done he is kept in at lunch to get it done.

This is what my post was about..can it be done like that.
Ive spoken to a few head teachers now and they said you cant do that.
Even his new school dont do that. This is why my post was done to ask.

Strathmore... The school has exams this week and not fair on him to join. School admissions said it takes upto 20 days but now being rushed through due to the complaints higher at the school. So he will join a week before school breaks up.. was confirmed today.

Ladies and gents.

Weve had trouble with this school for a year..my son was accused of stealing and he was punished for it but when i asked if he was caught with anything in his pocket they nervously said no..said he didnt take anything..but they kept him in for a whole lunch time with another boy.
My son did get a sorry but the head teacher was admit he was at fault and teacher was right.
He was also sat down at lunch finished his curry and rice but didnt want his greens.he was made to sit there and eat them or not go and play.
Missed his whole lunch time crying.(so now to packed lunch)
Was other things too but wont bore you.
My son is a very helpful boy.very polite. Do anything for you. He does question why they are mean and its hard
