DD is 5 and in Reception. Needs a costume for World Book Day. School are very strict in that it cannot be a character from a film or a Disney book of the film type of book. Must be an actual book character. The problem is she is only interested in unicorns and princesses and she is only just starting to read. Help!!!

Princess pearl from Zog?

blackteaplease · 26/02/2019 16:37

The princess from the princess and the wizard?

hels71 · 26/02/2019 16:59

When my DD was 5 she went as Saucepan Man from the Faraway Tree books.

TheWaiting · 26/02/2019 17:02

Thank you all. That’s interesting, Hels but with 3 brothers then everything in her life must be as girly as possible. I’m not at all girly so I just follow her lead.

Two princess possibilities; thanks!

My DD is going as the Tiger from the Tiger who Came to Tea, I realise that's not princessy but would she go as a girl character e.g. Sophie from that book, Matilda?

BigGreenOlives · 26/02/2019 17:07

The tiger who came to tea - tiger costume & a tea set.

SweetAsSpice · 26/02/2019 17:08

The Princess and the Pea? Room for creativity there for the costume too.

Bloody hell. It’s supposed to be a bit of fun, how do school enforce such a rule for primary aged children?!

What about Lucy from Narnia? When she becomes a princess?

PazRaz10 · 26/02/2019 17:12

Sugarlump the Unicorn from the Julia Donaldson book?

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 26/02/2019 17:15

Let her go as a unicorn there are lots of books with unicorns in them.

Here's a list off the top of my head (they might also be good present ideas if she's still into unicorns for her next birthday Grin)

You don't want a unicorn
Sugarlump and the unicorn
Unicorn thinks he's pretty great
That's not my unicorn
Today I'll be a unicorn
Magical unicorn dreams
Sophie Johnson unicorn expect
Thelma the unicorn

SweetAsSpice · 26/02/2019 17:15

Also, a lot of the Disney princess films are based on classic fairy tales...

BertieBotts · 26/02/2019 17:16

Do you read books to her? Does she have a favourite?

Boobiliboobiliboo · 26/02/2019 17:18

Sophie from that book, Matilda?

Or Sophie from the BFG and Matilda from Matilda?!

TheWaiting · 26/02/2019 17:19

Thanks. Yes, it becomes stressful when they are so strict about it. Having said that, they encourage them to bring the book to school with them and they the older ones spend time reading to the younger ones and the staff spend time reading to the older ones so I suppose at least it’s meaningful rather than just an excuse for a NU day.

Angelina ballerina? Tutu with mouse ears and tail

TheWaiting · 26/02/2019 17:25

Is Angelina Ballerina from a book? I thought the books were based on the tv show. I’ll investigate that one. Thanks.

The Angelina books came first! Would have loved to dress DD as this but unfortunately she had other ideas!

ChristianGreysAnatomy · 26/02/2019 17:40

Wendy from Peter Pan. Leggings, top, plus nightie. Done.

purpleme12 · 26/02/2019 17:45

Mine is 5. She's being the fox from the Gruffalo.

But I did have lots of things in mind she'd like...
Goldilocks
Little red riding hood
Dorothy from Wizard of Oz (she's got a book of it)
Mog
Stick Man
Gruffalo

ohmydaysagain · 26/02/2019 17:48

My 5 year old is going as little red riding hood. She chose what she wanted and I found it easy to sort out a costume. Can you not guide her? Give her ideas?

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 26/02/2019 17:50

What are her favourite books? Even if she doesn't read them, that you read to her?

ChoccyJules · 26/02/2019 17:54

Ours is confusing this year, the letter says dress as an animal but doesn’t say it has to be a character from a book. Am hoping this means generic animals are acceptable!

SavoyCabbage · 26/02/2019 17:54

I'd pick a outfit she already has and can still play in and go to the toilet and then think of a book.

Reaa · 26/02/2019 17:56

The princess and the pea is a great one as suggested above, princess dress and make a paper mache pea, painted green.
