Hi , my husband booked a surprise holiday to Florida as our Xmas present and it's just hit me it's his year 6 sats that week and he will miss 2 days , I'm so worried

OP posts:

He will be there for 3 days of them , his teacher is amazing so I don't think she would do that as he's a good kid x

He will get scored for the tests he completes, reading and G O S if timetables are the same as last year , and a writing mark as that is based on class work. He will not get a maths mark as he won't have completed all the tests. If you can get him in first thing onthurs, he could do the test and then leave.

ineedaholidaynow · 06/01/2019 22:24

Looking at the rules, it does appear that family holidays don't fall within the regulations where timings can be changed for a particular pupil, and the additional period is only 5 days after the original date, so probably wouldn't apply anyway.

PattiStanger · 06/01/2019 22:26

However a good a kid he is the teacher is going to be judged on the sats results and wouldn't be human if she didn't concentrate her efforts on the children she knows will sit the tests.

ineedaholidaynow · 06/01/2019 22:27

I thought most schools made it clear that holidays in SATS periods are very much discouraged. I am sure when DS was at Primary School, it was always in the newsletters at the beginning of each school year that no holidays should be booked in May for Y2 and Y6

Bright4880 · 06/01/2019 22:34

It was in the news letter this week but was obviously too late , my husband works away on nights sometimes for months . I deal with all the school stuff day to day with help from grandads with homework ect . He's a good dad who works hard to support his family . It's not that he's not interested. Just a genuine mistake xxxx

He was just doing something nice before he starts senior school

Can the dates not be changed? (Of the holiday, obviously, not the SAT's)

Bright4880 · 06/01/2019 22:42

We have looked but it's very expensive to change it all now

No secondary’s I know use them.

Then you don't know secondary schools around here.

Pretty daft of your DH tbh.

RomanyRoots · 06/01/2019 22:42

You can find out if you'll get a fine and dodge it by deregistering and H.edding until start of senior. Just a longer summer holiday.
There are huge benefits to your dc not having targets throughout school, that's if the secondary use SATS results, many don't.

How does that stop him from reading the newsletter?

Danglingmod · 06/01/2019 22:45

Why do so many primary teachers state so confidently here (and in real life) that year 7 is just redoing year 6? As if any secondary school would waste a year not teaching kids anything when we're judged so harshly on exam results!

PattiStanger · 06/01/2019 22:46

Surely the loss of earnings from the op having to give up work to home educate would far outway the amount of any fine. That seems like a huge sledgehammer for a tiny nut when she hasn't even mentioned a fine, would anyone really do that?

Bright4880 · 06/01/2019 22:46

This isn't an attack on my husband , he's a very busy man running his own business. As I said the news letter came out this week with all the dates he booked it last year as a Christmas present

FamilyOfAliens · 06/01/2019 22:47

Who knows whether they’re really teachers at all, on an anonymous forum?

Chocolatecake12 · 06/01/2019 22:47

not read the whole thread but the common misconception is that sats are just for the school is just not true.
Year 6 sats predict GCSE grades. They are used as data on each child to keep them on track throughout their secondary school life.

ineedaholidaynow · 06/01/2019 22:49

Thing is with Y6, there are many things happening, not just SATS eg transition days, play, residential. Usually all happening after SATS, not usually a good time to book holidays

PattiStanger · 06/01/2019 22:49

How does that stop him from reading the newsletter

based on the posts in my dcs school parents facebook group its very rare that fathers take charge of the school newsletter and if he works away I'd imagine he might not even see them in time

titchy · 06/01/2019 22:49

Presumably he'll also be missing out on all the post-SATS fun stuff too and possibly secondary school visits. And you'll be fined - £120 a day isn't it. That could add £1000 to the cost of your holiday.....

FamilyOfAliens · 06/01/2019 22:51

Anyone with an ounce of sense and a child in primary school shouldn’t need the school to remind them that KS2 Sats are the same time every year without fail. He either isn't involved enough or he doesn’t think Sats are important. A bit like you, OP, judging from your post upthread.

TulipsInbloom1 · 06/01/2019 22:51

I'd contact the travel agent and push his and one adult fight ticket back to the evening of the Thursday.

Grannyannex · 06/01/2019 22:51

Says are to test the school not your child. I wouldn’t worry. Florida will be life enriching

Most schools have a link to their newsletter on their website. Parents are expected to make the effort to keep themselves informed about their child’s education.

Sure it will.
