Non Competative Sports Days. I hate them

Everyday the same children come out of school with certificates for good writing/reading/maths etc, but sports day can't be competative in case children are upset when they loose.
At the mum of two sports mad sons it drives me mad as it's their one chance to shine.
Anyone else agree?

Oh, and I said that I would cheer your kid on, by the way.

Peachy · 21/06/2007 21:05

Desiderata should you be able to explain to my youngest why he has to come last I will feel more sympathy towards the notion of kids need to learn- frankly I'd be chuffed if he workled out the difference between red and blue, the rest is just window dressing atm.

Doesn't mean he shoudl ahve to lose every time though does it?

And no not all kids have SN of ocurse, but a great amny do in fact and school has to be inclusive. Many of us would far rather access appropriate education that allowed them speical choices- it ain't there, we have to make do.

puddle · 21/06/2007 21:05

I didn't say I would look actually Aloha, I said the consensus on here was that most people would. Just to be clear

DrNortherner · 21/06/2007 21:06

Des I thought you had to go to word

This is addictive isn't it?

So Aloha, would you be happy with a competetive sports day but no parents invited? Just peers and teachers?

Aloha · 21/06/2007 21:07

Desiderata, do you support compulsory public competitive sport for children in school or not?

Aloha · 21/06/2007 21:08

No Northerner, I would not support competitive sport in school at all, except for those who VOLUNTEER for it.

puddle · 21/06/2007 21:08

In my secondary school it was Not Cool to be good at sport. They introduced yoga into the curriculum as a result which was great for me.

I really do believe though that at DS's school sports days are not about who wins but doing your best and working as a team. There are loads of team activities and they are all absolutely sweet and supportive of each other. I have never heard a child ridiculed for coming last, dropping a ball, or told they mucked it up for the rest of the team.

Perhaps I am in for a rude awakening at some point.

SpawnChorus · 21/06/2007 21:09

Have skimmed over the last...ahem...100 or so posts, but I totally agree with Aloha.

OK, peachy et al.

Let's abolish school sports day.

Loads of other kids would be miserable, but just so long as you're happy.

DrN - went to work (2 hour shift), and came back

I'm off now, because I'm bored.

puddle · 21/06/2007 21:10

aaf I think it's so sad your child's work is not displayed by the way. What possible reason do they have for that?

puddle · 21/06/2007 21:12

cat64 I'm not just talkiing about art. Ds's school display all sorts of work, stories, poems, a good bit of number work, as well as art work.

Aloha · 21/06/2007 21:12

So would you be OK with a compulsory art competition for all children, with the art then being displayed in order of excellence, with the worst artist being clearly marked out? Really?

I think people forget that we all went to school, and yes, I found compulsory sports a ripe area for public humiliation, for me and for many other children. And if you don't remember that, then I suspect that's why you have no empathy for others in that situation.

Desiderata · 21/06/2007 21:12

Ah, but just before I go Aloha - not once in this thread have I advocated compulsory sports for kids, like yours, who don't want to do it.

Not once.

Read the farking posts before you get all quirky on me, girl.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

DrNortherner · 21/06/2007 21:12

Des don't go I need you

Aloha · 21/06/2007 21:12

Why do you need a compulsory competitive sports day so much Desiderata? Is it something to do with your childhood?

Peachy · 21/06/2007 21:13

why the totalitarian approach though?

why not abolish sports day as it is, and instead develop (and my schoold does a lot of time in rpactice forsports day, so the time would be there) teams etc for thsoe kids who have ability, and encourage those kids to compete in a league style environment. Non competitive kids could be encouraged to aprticipate in sports that are less - well - competitive. Mys chool offerd aerobics, and walking for example- the sort of thing people might actually maintain.

Its the compulsory but I have the issue with. I think exercise is important- kids shoudn't be put off during Infant school.

Aloha · 21/06/2007 21:13

And if you don't advocate it, what the hell are you arguing about???

Dancing, yoga, walking, pilates, solo running, swimming for pleasure...this is all stuff that adults do for themselves. None of it is competitive. How many adults do you know who play netball and run running races? Exactly.

hercules1 · 21/06/2007 21:15

But they are non competititve at the special schools I know.

MarshaBrady · 21/06/2007 21:16

If Desiderata says competitive sports days should be for those who wish to be competitive, then arent you two agreeing? Ie making it non compulsory?
I dont think Aloha is saying abolish sports day are you? just dont make it compulsory. Seems fair enough to make it for those who are good and/or enjoy it. Thats how it was at our school the best competed, the rest cheered from the side lines laughing at how we could paint our faces in green or whatever. No parents were there I dont think. It was fab.
(and my ds isnt old enough to compete so said with blank canvas as to whether he will be good or not)

I'm as baffled as you. If people want to battle it out to be the fastest runner, then good luck to them.
