I've seen a lot on Facebook choosing just book bags. So I just wondered which way most people go?

I think it depends from school to school. Ours had bookbags from Reception until the end of Y2 as did most of their classmates.

avamiah · 09/09/2018 23:30

Hi,
My daughter had both .
She started with a “school” back pack which was part of the uniform( same colour, school logo etc ) then after a month she needed a book bag .
Hope this helps.
Oh and a water bottle with her name on.

Book bags only up until KS2 at our school. Not sure what they'd need a backpack for as there's nothing else they need to take in everyday.

RavenWings · 09/09/2018 23:33

As a teacher, it's backpacks in my school. Fairly unusual to see kids with book bags.

avamiah · 09/09/2018 23:33

Rollonoctober,
They need their ruck sack for PE Kit.

avamiah · 09/09/2018 23:39

My daughter has a book bag to put her book in that she takes home every Friday to read and brings it back on a Monday .
Her back pack carries her PE kit in and water bottle .

purpleme12 · 09/09/2018 23:40

Mine has a rucksack type bag which has her pe things in.

I bought her a book bag cos soon she'll start bringing books home etc

I have worked in a few school's in the last few years. Usually until Ks2 they are only bringing back and forth a reading diary, their latest Biff and Chip book and the occasional letter. KS1 classes often don't encourage pencil cases because children tend to fuss with them or are often not allowed to use what's in them like gel pens and felt tips.
Then suddenly the older ones are carrying around their big heavy pencil case, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, their glasses case, their recorder etc and a book bag wouldn't really cut it any more.

Bookbag in reception, yr1 and yr2

SendYouUpInFlames · 09/09/2018 23:49

What about nursery ???? I totally forgot about this stuff.

Ds1 is 3yrs and going into nursery in 2 days.

Will he need a bookbag?
Water bottle?
P.E kit?

Thanks.

SendYouUpInFlames · 09/09/2018 23:49

The half a day nursery!

avamiah · 09/09/2018 23:59

SendYouUpInFlames,
Lol,
Maybe a little back pack .

lorisparkle · 10/09/2018 00:02

My ds are only allowed book bags at school - it is an absolute nightmare. At pre school they had a book bag which had their learning journal and art work and a ruck sack with spare clothes.

HailSatan · 10/09/2018 00:07

I don't see how you could fit all you need in a book bag. DC has been using a backpack since they started nursery

Hate book bags. Not allowed to put bottle in them. So book bag other hand bottle= no hand to hold my 3yo. Let alone older one's coat.

iamapixiebutnotaniceone · 10/09/2018 00:09

My daughter is not allowed a rucksack, the cloakroom is too small apparently and aside from her reading books and a drink she has nothing else to carry

BarbaraHepworth · 10/09/2018 00:12

They leave their PE kit on a peg.
Lunch stored in one place. Bookbags in another.
There's a lot of interaction each day between the teacher of 30 4/5 years olds and their parents. Make it easy for them and use a book bag for two or three years. Your child can easily carry a lunch bag or book bag with one in each hand.Or you can take your free school meals.

HopeGarden · 10/09/2018 00:17

I expect it varies from school to school, but in our school the kids in Reception, Y1 & Y2 are only allowed to bring in book bags.

BackforGood · 10/09/2018 00:20

Some schools try and insist on book bags, but they are a pain in the proverbial.
Won't take a water bottle, or their jumper when they take it off (can often be cold when you set off in morning but hot and sunny at pick up), or their hat / scarf in Winter, etc.
Also means they have something in their hands on the walk to and from school, unlike a backpack which means both hands / arms are free.
Schools often ask them to bring something in to do with a topic they are working on or phonic or whatever, and again - book bag hopeless for that.
However, ask the school what they use them for - some like them to put the book bags all into a tray / box and all the books get changed by someone on a certain day, or whatever. In which case, a book bag might be what they want although a zipped plastic wallet does the job.

AornisHades · 10/09/2018 00:25

We had bookbags in KS1. PE kit went in a bag for the whole half term. Free school dinners so no lunch bag.
Backpack for KS2 especially if they take lunch.

CookPassBabtridge · 10/09/2018 00:27

We take lunch bag, book bag, rucksack and PE bag!
Rucksack carries spare uniform and underpants incase of accident etc.

Korvalscat · 10/09/2018 01:39

We leave the PE kit bag at school on his peg and there are spare clothes (trousers, pants and socks) at the bottom of the bag.
When in Reception, last year, he originally took a rucksack but we found that we had difficulty fitting some of the books into the rucksack without bending the corners so we switched to a bookbag. Dc was pleased because he could fit the bookbag in his tray more easily, I didn't even realise he had a tray otherwise the rucksack would have been swapped earlier. He manages to stuff his sweatshirt into the bookbag but just carries his waterbottle.

5000KallaxHoles · 10/09/2018 08:09

Book bags is the norm in our school - few who go to things like activities on from school or have packed lunches bring back packs but most do book bags that fit into the kids trays.

ThreeAnkleBiters · 10/09/2018 09:06

Most schools round my way insist on a book bag until the end of Y2 - which is part of the school uniform. If children have other things to carry into school they may bring it in a run sack but at least in My DC's school there would be no where to leave a ruck sack during the day. After Y2 they change to having a ruck sack.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 10/09/2018 09:47

My son is in year two and still only got a book bag
