Do more kids start reception using a backpack or a book bag

I've seen a lot on Facebook choosing just book bags. So I just wondered which way most people go?

At my school and the primary my DCs went to, only book bags are allowed. Anything else simply takes up too much space.

Our school has book bags for KS1. They are beyond useless, I got dts backpacks when they went into y1 so they could actually carry the water bottle / books / homework folder / lunch bag / cardigan / random stuff in them.

SteggySawUs · 10/09/2018 16:15

Both! Ours carry a backpack which contains the book bag, water bottle, and in due course hat/scarf/gloves and jumper that's been taken off, sunhat etc.

dementedpixie · 10/09/2018 17:32

Our school never had a book bag so we had a backpack

User246 · 10/09/2018 19:58

Check with your school.

Ours is book bags. It's expected they will bring only book bags all the way to leaving at the end of year 6.

They are also supposed to only bring the drawstring pump bags for pe....but Yr 3 and upwards can bring a rucksack for pe as quite frankly ds's trainers barely fit in a drawstring one.

No other bags should be brought unless absolutely necessary: eg walk to school and rucksack easier than carrying a book bag and a lunch bag and all other stuff, etc.

ShalomJackie · 10/09/2018 20:02

School issued book bag.

Drawstring bag for PE kit.

SoyDora · 10/09/2018 20:05

Backpacks aren’t allowed until KS2 at our school.
PE kits live on their pegs in drawstring bags. DD started reception a couple of weeks ago and doesn’t take anything except her books, so a book bag is fine.

TheCatFromOuterSpace · 10/09/2018 20:08

We have both. Book bag because school insist. Rucksack for water bottle, sun cream, packed lunch, hat etc. I got a massive one so the book bag can go inside it on the walk to and from school.

Hersetta427 · 10/09/2018 20:35

Our school only allows book bags in KS 1 so they can move to backpacks in yr 3

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 10/09/2018 20:36

I bought DD a backpack. I hate bookbags!! They're useless, can barely get anything in them and they just fall apart.

Parttimewasteoftime · 10/09/2018 20:59

Book bag and drawstring pe kit bag until Y3. Goggle bottle buddies to attach water bottle amazing things got one in school colours.

Figgygal · 10/09/2018 21:02

Book bag Yr and Y1
Drawstring bag for PE kit that's hung on peg every term

Ds just started Y2 and is now going with a rucksack as are most of the other kids.

Parttimewasteoftime · 10/09/2018 21:02

Sorry bottle buddi (no I don't sell them) 😂

LusaCole · 10/09/2018 21:04

Book bags here, until year 4 ish.

PurplePotatoes · 10/09/2018 21:18

I love those Bottle Buddi's! I'm definitely getting one of those.

DD has just started reception. We haven't been told if we should bring a rucksack or not but at the moment we're just taking the book bag and PE kit in a drawstring bag which stays at school all week.

At the moment with no sun cream, gloves, hat's etc. needed we don't have anything to go in a rucksack but I'm not sure what happens when we do need that stuff.

Rhayader · 10/09/2018 21:38

Bookbag in infants, backpack in juniors . This is enforced at our school. PE kit goes in a drawstring bag :) and actually in reception and first term of year 1 they wear their pe kit all day anyway!

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 10/09/2018 21:39

I love my sons bottle buddi. Cost a pretty penny but well worth it.

ShakespearesSisters · 10/09/2018 21:53

Hate book bags with a passion. The kids won't carry them, so poor old muggins ended up carrying it. The kids get given one in reception, I was relieved when I bought a rucksack when the eldest went into year 1. My youngest has just started reception, they gave her a book bag too :-( I'm currently wedging it into her rucksack as she will wear that. I can't hold both their hands and bookbags to walk anywhere and I have my own bag to deal with.
In their rucksacks they can fit all their books, waterproofs, sun hats, gloves, scarves etc, water bottle in the netty bit on the outside and whatever they bring home. They are not huge, they fit an A4 book in nicely without things getting bent.

HailSatan · 10/09/2018 22:28

Honestly I'm glad I chose a rucksack now. I saw so many kids struggling with them this morning it was ridiculous

Tbh I just load myself up with them like a pony with my son and my friends children if I am walking them. They are all quite light and be easier than being loaded up with backpacks.

SoyDora · 11/09/2018 06:25

Feeling neglectful now that I just send mine in with a book bag and her books!

SoyDora · 11/09/2018 06:26

Our school physically doesn’t have the space to store so many rucksacks so only book bags are allowed.
