Labelling socks?

Dc starts school this week for the first time so I'm in a labelling frenzy. Not sure if I'm supposed to label socks or not? I've got grey school ones. New to this so absolutely no idea!

It's a state school

Iron on White transfers, there will be a whole load of gray socks when changing for PE.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 03/09/2018 11:28

I didn’t, they won’t look anyway! Just teach them to tuck them inside their shoes and if you lose any (we rarely did), buy some more.

DiggingTheDino · 03/09/2018 11:30

Mine never lost any socks and to be honest the price of new socks I would rather have to buy new than label socks!

flyingsaucersherbet · 03/09/2018 11:30

Our school insists on them being sewn on with a loop (private) but I am a rebel and figure I’d rather just buy new socks if I need to and they get lost.... life is too short to label socks!!

DunesOfSand · 03/09/2018 11:31

Mine don't change socks for pe - not at the stage of football socks etc being needed yet. I don't name socks or pants. Everything else gets an iron on or stick on label.

SavoyCabbage · 03/09/2018 11:31

No. People do but not many.

What you could do is put a couple of coloured stitches in the toe so he can recognise his own socks if he needs to. I did this so I could tell which school socks belonged to which child at home but both of them have managed to track down missing socks at PE time because of the stitches.

For me, that’s half of the job of labelling your stuff. So your own child can easily see which jumper is their jumper in the pile of fifteen jumpers that are left on the field without searching for their intitals in smudged permanent marker.

On PE days the adults will be telling them to put their clothes back in their PE bags or neatly on their chairs or wherever they want them to be. They will spend more time getting changed than they will actually doing PE.

Hullabalooo · 03/09/2018 12:02

Thanks for this. Really appreciated.

I can't believe how much stuff there is to label!

Any other weird or random stuff to label I should be aware of?

zebedeetwinkle · 03/09/2018 14:20

As a teacher (as well as a parent) please please please label everything!!
Even socks!
Especially in the foundation stage getting changed for PE is chaos, children take everything of and literally stand naked in the classroom and it isn't helped with parents not labelling things.
If you can't label them, write initials on the inside?

Most important things to label are obviously tops, dresses, shorts etc. as well as vests, all PE kit, shoes, book bag or backpack etc. Literally label anything and your childs teacher will be so so grateful!!! :)

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 03/09/2018 15:22

Ds going into yr2... never done socks or pants.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 03/09/2018 15:23

I only buy cheap socks and pants though

5000KallaxHoles · 03/09/2018 15:34

A lot of the manufacturers have started putting white spaces inside socks and tights so you can just write on them with a suitable pen when name labelling. I think Asda do for girls' socks at least.

I never have bothered other than sharpie-ing inside the sock cuff (if there's a white space to write it), or on the sole of the foot for DD1... DD2 has the organisational problems that come along with dyspraxia so I've name labelled them for that reason alone. I also label her pants - but it's because it helps her get them on the right way around if she KNOWS she's got a name tape in ALL her clothes that goes at the back.

One people tend to forget - shoes. They do tend to take them off a fair bit and they're prime territory for getting completely muddled (and half the class having the same pair from Clarks).

5000KallaxHoles · 03/09/2018 15:35

Basically if it's at all detachable from the child - I label it. More flexible for DD1 than DD2 where if at all possible it's name labelled and attached back onto the child.

Redcrayons · 03/09/2018 15:40

I did in reception then realised that the name tapes probably cost more than the socks.

Name everything you can't easily replace. Especially shoes, if you have boys. Practically every boy has the same pair of clarks shoes.

And show them the label so they know how to tell it's theirs.

Hullabalooo · 03/09/2018 18:00

Thanks gang. Really helpful!

Teach them this rhyme: Socksies into shoesies - that way we don't loseies :)

Hullabalooo · 03/09/2018 21:05

Brilliant! Thanks

I label everything, with proper woven nametapes or for waterbottles etc special stick on labels.

But even I don't label socks.

DolorestheNewt · 04/09/2018 08:38

I did. I folded the label in half and then sewed the shortest edge against the top inside edge of the sock, IYSWIM - in other words, I made a loop out of the label and sewed the short edge of the loop to the sock. Takes a minute once your needle's threaded.

Allyg1185 · 04/09/2018 08:41

I don't label socks, never have. Ds just gone into p3 ( Scotland ) and has never lost a sock. I would just buy more if he did. Everything else is labelled though

mammmamia · 04/09/2018 08:47

Our school also insists on it (private) and I rebelled but last year they actually got all the DC to show if their socks were labelled on the first day. So this year I have given in and labelled them.

Hullabalooo · 04/09/2018 22:15

Cracked and labelled them. Iron on ones so only took ten minutes.

Did feel like my soul died a little bit though 😀

Thanks for the thread OP, I had been wondering the same. Looks like I have some socks to label tomorrow. Thankfully the ones I have are stick-on rather than iron-on!

welshmist · 04/09/2018 23:09

Anyone else find stick one ones end up in the fluff filter in the tumble dryer. Easier to sew on just stick on a nice box set and sew, sew, sew.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 04/09/2018 23:12

The stikins stuck so well I found them impossible to remove.
