Have I bought too much school uniform!?

I have a son starting reception in September and everyone I work with has said I have gone OTT with the uniform. Just friendly banter and all a bit of a laugh so I am just light heartily wondering what others think of as "too much".

I am not prepared to do a mid week wash so I have a new pair of everything, for every day of the week - I don't want to be sponging yogurt off of his polo to send him in to wear the following day (seems a bit dirty).

I have bought 9 polo tops, 6 pairs of trousers, 2 branded school jumpers, 1 school fleece and all the crap they need for their PE kit/drinks bottle/bag etc...

It was all in the Sainsburys 25% off sale so I got all the non branded school items for about £30 - also the trousers are all on the big side so the 6 pairs will probably last him all year until he needs shorts in summer.

To be honest it's the school jumper that seems to attract the dirt so i have got 5 non logo jumpers, 3 pairs of trousers and 6 polo tops to last the week and Monday of the next.

SheSparkles · 24/08/2018 14:14

9 polo tops?? How many days are there in your school week?😂

Namechange8471 · 24/08/2018 14:16

I'd take some of the polos back and get more jumpers.

Tomboytown · 24/08/2018 14:17

I had 25 polo shirts at one point
It's never too much as far as I'm concerned

Tomboytown · 24/08/2018 14:18

Mine never wore a sweater, so having extra of them was a waste

Namechange8471 · 24/08/2018 14:19

It seems too much if you actually do laundry Hmm

Surely 5 at the most then they get washed and ironed for the week ahead?

MissBartlettsconscience · 24/08/2018 14:19

You'll need more jumpers and probably more fleeces - over the winter they'll get dirtier than polos.

You'll probably find by the time things are lost/ left in the classroom/ lent to a friend, that you're sponging yoghurt off because they don't have anything clean even with 9 polo shirts!

mysteryfairy · 24/08/2018 14:28

I’m wearing jeans that are marginally too big today and they are so irritating! Personally I’d go with less pairs of trousers that actually fit him.

ShoesJerry · 24/08/2018 14:31

9 polos is too many, IMO. 5 would be ideal, so you have a fresh one each day. More than 2 jumpers is probably also advisable. In the colder weather, these will get grubbier than the polos. We usually have three pairs of trousers and that's never been a problem.

BikeRunSki · 24/08/2018 14:31

9 polo shirts?

I’ve managed happily with 6 for each child fir years. One for everyday and one spare. 3 jumpers and 3 trousers/skirts.

BigusBumus · 24/08/2018 14:33

Its always the jumpers that get dirtiest tbh. My children, when in reception always wore a clean uniform every day of the week and I washed the lot each weekend.

Now they are teens and will wear the same shirt all week if I let them... (they reek.)

Vanillaradio · 25/08/2018 09:25

I've only got two jumpers as ds rarely wears jumpers as they have a tendency to set his eczema off. I got 6 normal polo shirts and 4 long sleeve ones for the winter (to keep him warm when he's not wearing the jumperGrin) also 3 pairs of trousers. We'll see how that works out.......

ifIonlyknew · 27/08/2018 21:32

we have always just had 2 shirts, 1 cardigan and 2 bottoms be they pinafores/skirts or trousers, 1 tie. never had any problems at all.

Oly5 · 27/08/2018 21:36

Nope, not too much. The polos get filthy so always good to have more.
You’ll need more than 2 logo jumpers - we have 4

trilbydoll · 27/08/2018 21:37

It depends how quick he grows. DD was in the same uniform all year and the supermarket stuff did eventually disintegrate, we certainly got through 9 polos. But if he shoots up after Christmas you won't have a chance to wear them all out.

Clutterbugsmum · 27/08/2018 22:00

I will guarantee that at least 2 Polo shirts will be ruined by half term, they will have 'washable` paint on them that you can not get off for love or money.

I always have at least 6 white Polo's and 4 trousers.

Zoflorabore · 27/08/2018 22:00

Have a 15yr old ds and a 7yr old dd and have always stuck to the method of " one to wear, one spare, one in the wash ".

My kids wear a fresh uniform every day so ds gets minimum of 3 shirts ( I normally buy 5 ) 3 black trousers, 2 ties ( always good to have a spare tie ) jumper is optional and nobody wears one, and one blazer. I also buy separate school socks and keep them in a basket in his sock drawer.

Dd gets 5 white polos ( 2 branded and 3 generic ) 2 pinafores and a skirt, 3 cardigans and then separate school socks and bobbles which I get made to match her uniform.

The branded polos last much longer than the generic ones which I throw out at the end of term and replace, same as the black pumps which are usually wrecked by then.

You can never have too much uniform :)

ScattyCharly · 27/08/2018 22:03

I wouldn't worry about it. I expect the polo tops cost pence and those are the item you have too many of. If you get that many polos, its best to get perhaps 4 of them a size or 2 bigger. I think you need another jumper if you don't want to do midweek washing. No way could either of mine have managed with only 2 clean jumpers a week in reception.

sijjy · 27/08/2018 22:17

I buy 5 pairs of trousers. 6 polo shirts only because they come in packs of 3 and 3/4 school logo jumpers. They last my boys all year. Sometimes have to buy new shirts or polos because of stains. But they're quite cheap.

itshappenedagain · 27/08/2018 22:46

Like others I'd say but a couple more jumpers, just generic no logo type from the supermarket it possible ( our school only allows school purchases logo type) I have 5 full sets of uniform for each dc and 2 spare shirts on top of that.
Including socks/ underwear.
I iron and hang everything at the weekend and then 5 full sets are ready for the next week. Inevitably you will end up with shirts that look grubby or are covered in mud/paint so will need to be thrown out.

PhilomenaButterfly · 27/08/2018 22:49

Mine have 2 of everything, but I do a wash every day.

madeyemoodysmum · 27/08/2018 22:56

Just keep it if it makes you feel happier. Then if you have a lazy weekend or a busy and don't wash for a few days you always have spares. Polos are so cheap anyway.

Applesandpears23 · 27/08/2018 22:58

I have two jumpers, two cardigans and a fleece, all bought from 2nd hand uniform shop and about 10 polo shirts. 2 dresses, 2 skirts and one trousers as not sure what she will want to wear and I plan to get more of whatever she likes when I see what she wears. I have too busy a life to guarantee doing the washing at the weekend EVERY weekend.

London28 · 27/08/2018 23:10

No not too much in my opinion.
My youngest two children. have five polo shirts each, five jumpers each, five trousers/pinafores, two fleeces.
Plus numerous pairs of school socks, school tights, knickers/boxers and vests for school.

I work full time and do not want to be washing and drying uniform when I come home. I wash it all at weekend.

The jumpers/polos get messiest when little.

Label everything !

RainbowGlitterFairy · 28/08/2018 00:27

Are they white polos? if so there is no such thing as too many, I'd keep 1 maybe even 2 back for assemblies/school plays/photos etc.

6 pairs of trousers allows for one each day plus a spare in the book bag, or sometimes to wear on the Monday on the weekends you totally forget the washing til Sunday evening and can't dry it in time (I may be quite good at forgetting about washing). I work in reception and even for an adult it is a very tough environment for clothes, so I have 6 pairs of cheap work trousers at any one time too.

The lazy trick with "washable paint" by the way is to rinse in the sink quickly as soon as you can with a bit of shower gel then just chuck it in the washing basket and wash it when you get round to it. unless its red paint, that crap doesn't come out.
