Have I bought too much school uniform!?

I have a son starting reception in September and everyone I work with has said I have gone OTT with the uniform. Just friendly banter and all a bit of a laugh so I am just light heartily wondering what others think of as "too much".

I am not prepared to do a mid week wash so I have a new pair of everything, for every day of the week - I don't want to be sponging yogurt off of his polo to send him in to wear the following day (seems a bit dirty).

I have bought 9 polo tops, 6 pairs of trousers, 2 branded school jumpers, 1 school fleece and all the crap they need for their PE kit/drinks bottle/bag etc...

It was all in the Sainsburys 25% off sale so I got all the non branded school items for about £30 - also the trousers are all on the big side so the 6 pairs will probably last him all year until he needs shorts in summer.

We've got ten polos. Asda were selling packs of five for £7.50 and I thought I'd save one for his photograph in November and the others for February time when the ones we've first used have gone a bit off-white.

What I would say is, along with having three jumpers, that boys sometimes let their wee drip from the loo when they're rushing. My son doesn't do this at weekends, and not over the summer at all. But at school he appears to be in a massive rush and frankly his trousers, by the button and waistband, smell. It's horrible. So he wears a new pair of trousers/shorts every day. I've spoken to him about this in numerous occasions, and unless anyone can offer gems of advice I was just going to continue with clean bottoms every day until he grows out of it. It's a pain in the neck.

Mine have 5 polos each (they came in multipacks that size) but 4 cardigans. It's their cardigans that take an absolute battering (polos get protected a fair bit by pinafores) and I tend to put two into regular rotation and then swap them over when they get too tired and pen-stained to wear. I'd be fine with them wearing them with whiteboard pen marks on but there's a child in DD1's class who says some very unkind things (sometimes there's a lack of understanding that it's unkind, sometimes there's just the fact they've been brought up to think that all that matters is looking pretty and fashionable all the time) about appearance and marks on clothing and the like and I don't want to put my kids' heads above the parapet to mark them out for that kind of stuff if I can avoid it.

Our stuff's also red so if you're just washing one or two polos they end up pink fairly fast- so I tend to prefer to have more to spread the wear and tear on them a bit, and I've got a collar chewer (although she wears chewellery to deter this).

We’ve got 4 or 5 of everything as it tends to come home dirty every day and sometimes not organised enough for it to be washed dried and ironed for midweek. Polo shirts won’t last a year as they get stains that don’t come out and also shrink chronically, so it’s not like you won’t use them though may need to buy bigger!

this a duplicate thread surely?

one on
one off
and one in the wash

I am the same prefer to have more so I can do less loads of washing. Always a clean uniform on as well. Also good idea to have lots of polos as they often get dirty.

lovelyjubilly · 28/08/2018 09:10

We get for each child:
5 shirts
2 cardigans/jumpers
2 skirts/dresses/trousers
1 coat
2 PE kits

Actually I think that give or take you've got it pretty spot on.

Personally I found that polos were trashed in foundation so I'd say that's a good call.

This year (y2) I have actually increased our stockpile and have got 3 cardigans, 4 pinafores, 1 skirt, 6 polos and 3 shirts.I've also bought 5 pairs of tights and 10 pairs of socks. I will however have have a newborn and really want to avoid needing to do washing when I won't have time. If you don't want to do a midweek wash then you probably have enough, although you might want an extra jumper. In our case I've always found them to be hardy, occasionally needing only a bit of a wipe.

PrimalLass · 28/08/2018 12:06

It's all fine.

PrimalLass · 28/08/2018 12:07

My kids haven't worn school jumpers for years. The school is too hot and we live minutes away. So lots of shirts is better IMO.

PhilomenaButterfly · 28/08/2018 14:49

You're lucky Primal. The DC's school makes them wear jumpers when it's snowed. DD swelters in school.

Iizzyb · 28/08/2018 18:35

My cleaner does my ironing so I need a full week + an extra set. Ds sometimes could wear trousers again. Jumpers needed changing/washing every day plus Sainsbury's ones just soaked up every sticky finger mark and I spent more on vanish over the year than I did on the jumpers.

However basically you need more jumpers. I would swap a pack of 3 shirts for 2 more jumpers op

PrimalLass · 28/08/2018 19:23

Ugh, school should not be able to make them wear jumpers if they don't want to. I stopped bothering when I went into the classroom and found all DS's jumpers in the jumper box. He took them off as soon as he got in the door.

PhilomenaButterfly · 28/08/2018 19:31

I know. I'm sure they know whether they're hot or cold. Last year DD had 2 teachers. 1 was OK with them taking their jumpers off in class, the other made them keep them on.

blinkineckmum · 31/08/2018 00:27

My poor ds has
1 jumper
2 polos
2 pairs of shorts
2 pairs of trousers
1 PE kit
I figure I wash every day and will be in the lookout for 2nd hand stuff once we're in. And I'm sure I can buy more if I need it.
