What book band is your reception child ending the year on?

Just interested really, not in a competitive way at all. DS has moved to blue band today and I'm sooo proud of him as it took him a long time to 'get' reading and now he literally can't get enough of it because what he is reading is a hell of a lot more interesting than "Bob put it on" or "Pip got it" which he was consigned to for months Grin.

I'm assuming he is average on the scale, because he was on Red for so long as it's marked as "expected" on his end of year report, but I haven't a clue what the others in his class are on so just wondered about your lot Smile.

Green, been on it for a while. First DS ended on yellow borderline blue.

Needmorechocolate · 13/07/2018 20:23

Yellow, only just moved up from red.

crayoladreamz · 13/07/2018 20:23

First son ended on blue and then read loads over the summer and started Y1 two months later on gold (jumping 4 bands)

Second son is on yellow now but he’s just finished pre school and due to start reception in September. He just seems to “get it” with no effort.

Pitapotamus · 13/07/2018 20:25

Mine ended on blue. He started school reading quite well so I’d say you’re ds is doing pretty well. My ds was only allowed to move up a reading level when his whole reading group was ready to move up. He was in the top group in his class so I guess they all finished reception on blue.

RideSallyRide76 · 13/07/2018 20:27

Just moved onto green in time for the summer holiday. I've bought him a set of the ladybird read it yourself books as he's been bringing these home for a while and he loves them.

Thefourmuskateers · 13/07/2018 20:32

She ended on yellow. Shes in Yr1 and ending on turquoise. Shes been on it ages as we’ve been reading our own books instead of theirs. She got 39 out of 40 in her phonics screen though.

Thefourmuskateers · 13/07/2018 20:33

27th August bday but not that it matters, my friends daughter is 2 weeks younger and free reading!

bangingmyheadoffabrickwall · 13/07/2018 20:44

Bone of contention with my child’s school. Started on pink in the October. Was still pinky in the June. Felt guilty for not picking it up sooner as I am a teacher but vowed never to be one of those ‘teacher mums’ but in the end it is what was needed. If one of my students had been in pink level for 8 months I would be hauled up in front of SLT demanding an explanation. They ‘jumped’ him into yellow when I wrote a letter of my concerns.

He’s in Y1 and judging by the books he was bringing home, they err allowing him to coast. I was giving him green books in the Autumn term of Y1 and they were giving him yellow.
In the Spring term, he was bringing home green books and then suddenly they gave him yellow books which consolidated phase 3 of L&S!! I queried this and got the reply that he was ‘practising and consolidating phase 3 sounds’ that he DID over a year previous. I argued that those sounds would still appear in his reader along with the phase 5 alternative sounds that he was getting!!! I got the disinclined impression that the class teacher was NOT a fan of the book system one of the other teachers had developed and commented that she was ‘very protective’ of her system. I questioned the suitability of it and whether this was actually based on hard research. She shook her head.
So fast forward to now, he gets 40/40 on his phonics test and all of a sudden he’s launched into turquoise books. Hmm
He’s ‘free reading’ at home. Gave him an old SATS paper (before 2014 curriculum) and he scored 25/30.

He loves school, I liked his teacher but as a school, they are giving my son a bit of a mediocre education. It’s a bit ‘meh’. Not even an educational visit this year. When we moaned they put on a ‘fun day’ with a bouncy castle. Angry

I would happily change his school but work commitments and HIS overall happiness (loves school and his friends) wouldn’t make it a good move!
At least we KNOW he won’t be going to the local high school which IS most DEFINITELY mediocre.

PorridgeAgainAbney · 13/07/2018 20:50

Pitapotamus that seems strange making them all move at the same time? I wonder why they do that, as some might be really bored if they were waiting a while.

Really interesting seeing the variations. I'm always fascinated that you can almost see how their brains work when they are learning so much; he was really good at numbers/maths from the start so it's like his brain was thinking "nah, I'm into numbers at the moment, you books will have to wait a while till I've got a bit more space in my head." Grin

By the way, is everyone else thinking how ridiculous it is that we are at the end of the 1st year of school already? I'm sure it was only about 3 months ago that he went off in shorts down to his knees and cuffs rolled up twice. Sad but also [need an "excited" face]?

banging that all sounds a bit shite for you, but it must be tough when you know he is doing better than they are giving him the opportunity to do while he is there. I know what you mean about weighing up happiness and logistics of a move against the actual standard of education he is receiving, my friend is having the same dilemma at the moment.

I haven't paid attention to book bands - we read to DC; DC reads to us. They're 5. Nothing to stress out about!

PorridgeAgainAbney · 13/07/2018 21:09

I'm not stressing about it. I read to him, he reads to me. I was asking purely out of curiosity (as I said in the op) as I am just a normal human being who likes to ask questions and chat to people Smile.

Varies hugely at the end of EYFS in my experience , probably more so than any other year group. We have children still on lilac/pink and others who are reading white/lime (or own choice chapter books) with comprehension. Yellow-Green seems most usual here.

HeyMicky · 13/07/2018 21:15

Free reader. But she's a September baby and knew all her sounds going in so had a good starting point.

Fitzsimmons · 13/07/2018 21:18

My DS has been left on red since the Easter holidays. He's reading orange books at home after we bought a set because it became clear the school weren't really fussed about getting pupils beyond the "expected" level and he was (and still is) bringing home the same half dozen books on rotation. I get the impression they are focusing their efforts on getting some of the lesser able students up to expected and I understand the need to do that but it's so frustrating to see him basically being ignored.

Pitapotamus · 13/07/2018 21:57

Yes, it does seem strange indeed! I suspect it is more to do with the fact that it’s easier to manage if they are all at the same level so they work at the speed of the slowest in the group! Not that they really read with them much at all as far as I can tell!

To be honest, this last year (Y1) I’ve been getting frustrated with it so I’ve bought the bear grylls books for him to read at home which he is managing fine.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 13/07/2018 22:13

Ds was turquoise this time last year.

Madmarchpear · 13/07/2018 22:13

Dd is on blue books. I thought this was pretty average so I was surprised when rated exceeding in reading.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 13/07/2018 22:14

Blues fine tbh. We had lots leave on yellow

Madmarchpear · 13/07/2018 22:46

It it a myth that the expectations are individual and take age into account?

User14789011 · 14/07/2018 07:51

DS is also on blue and I also thought this was average. They are in sets for reading and he’s in the middle somewhere. Not had his report yet but expecting ‘expected’. I’d be very surprised and a bit sceptical if he was rated ‘exceeding’ in reading.

MinPinPuzzz · 14/07/2018 07:56

My DS is only on blue books from school but got exceeding for every element of the EYFS in his report yesterday... Go figure!

WeightedCompanionCube · 14/07/2018 08:19

Yellow is the reception aim in our school, turquoise the y1 aim.
My reception child is on blue, my y1 child is on gold - I'm chuffed to bits as at one point my youngest wasn't expected to even hit any end of year expectations so we've turned it around massively (I did a bit of gentle intervention at home)

ThursdayLastWeek · 14/07/2018 08:22

I’m staggered that DC has just gone up to green! I’m so pleased for him, it seems to have 'clicked' in the last few weeks.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 14/07/2018 08:26

Finishing reception year on Red books here.
My eldest was free reading midway through Year 2. It will come, I'm not worried.
