What book band is your reception child ending the year on?

Just interested really, not in a competitive way at all. DS has moved to blue band today and I'm sooo proud of him as it took him a long time to 'get' reading and now he literally can't get enough of it because what he is reading is a hell of a lot more interesting than "Bob put it on" or "Pip got it" which he was consigned to for months Grin.

I'm assuming he is average on the scale, because he was on Red for so long as it's marked as "expected" on his end of year report, but I haven't a clue what the others in his class are on so just wondered about your lot Smile.

Red here as well and marked as meeting expectations. I have also noticed that his confidence with reading has improved massively this term and he's definitely 'getting it' so I am happy with that. They all get there in the end.

If you Google it there are loads of charts showing you this.
In my experience there is a broad range depending on child's age, ability and how regularly they practice / how much they are encouraged at home. The last being the most critical.

Red, but jumped to yellow yesterday (last day of school for us). he had been in pink until last half term, then it clicked

Dolceandgabbana14 · 14/07/2018 13:35

My DS is on red but has been for some time and reads them confidently. At home he has a good go at the magic key stories, which I believe are stage 5 (not sure of colour). They seem to hold them back to make sure their comprehension of what they are reading is secure. The problem with racing through the coloured band is that they will soon find the content of the books may not be age appropriate, as they start to tackle more mature themes which the child might not be ready for.

As a teacher myself I would be more concerned with their phonic knowledge as an indicator of progress. Letters and sounds splits the phonics system into phases and it seems to me the system that many schools use. DS is working within phase 4.

Not to be rude but the schools moaning about content should put up or shut up tbh. There’s series like All Stars for high level ks1 readers

DD was on yellow for ages this term, then one of the parents of another child in her reading group gently complained that her son was a bit bored. Now she's on a mix of turquoise and purple, and seems to be coping fine. I very strongly suspect that for those who enjoy reading, it really depends just how much the school tried to stretch them.

SheepyFun · 14/07/2018 14:55

and definitely yes to Dolceandgabbana14 - DD is currently reading a book about jokes, which I'm pretty sure she doesn't get. Given the age of the books, I suspect the school struggles to afford newer ones for better readers - the early stage books were much newer.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 14/07/2018 14:57

I have to admit some of ds’ early level ones are newer as they will be given by parents after their child’s outgrow them.

Ds2 is on blue but got expected Confused

tomhazard · 15/07/2018 14:14

DD has finished on turquoise. She is a November born child and was able to read yellow when she started due to being at school overseas so it seems about the right amount of progress.

RideSallyRide76 · 15/07/2018 20:05

Ds2 is on blue but got expected

It's not just about the level of their book though, I think they have to be able to break down and sound out more complex words rather than just recognise them by sight and they have to be able to answer quite a wide variety of questions on the text they're reading in order to get exceeding. Perhaps this is where they didn't have enough evidence?

Didiplanthis · 15/07/2018 21:45

Blue is fine. My dd was on something like white at the end of reception but obviously peaked early as then only moved up 2 more in yr 1. Ds was on blue so 6 bands lower than dd but carried on an upward course and has finished yr 1 only 1 band lower than dd did. They pretty much all get there. Children finishing reception on red or yellow now in yr 3 read far better than my dd who has found the move to pages of close typed text incredibly difficult.

MrsPreston11 · 16/07/2018 10:04

May born DD is just onto green. She's done so well this year, really proud of her.

I'm sure she'll read lots over the summer (book worm older sister) so hoping Y1 she can continue doing as well.

AmberLangslow · 16/07/2018 10:26

My DS finished Reception on Red but now, at the end of Year 1, is one of the best readers in his class. It really clicked this year and he has made tremendous progress. His birthday is in July and he’s AFAIK the youngest in his year so maybe not a surprise that he found reading a bit of a challenge at first. He just wasn’t really ready for it last year, but definitely is now!

AmberLangslow · 16/07/2018 10:32

Both his phonics and comprehension are excellent. As said upthread, I wouldn’t have wanted him moving up through the book bands if this were not the case.

mindutopia · 17/07/2018 13:40

Mine is on red. I think that must be what they aim for them to end on as they are super easy for her and she’s been on them probably since January. But they don’t ever seem to send home the yellow ones. Same with her keywords. She knows them and they’re easy but she’ll still have the same one for a month. I think they are really conscious of not pushing them too much at this stage, which is fine by me.

blackteaplease · 17/07/2018 13:47

Er I have no idea. He can read the books he has which I am really proud of but as he was very reluctant to read at the start of reception but I don't pay attention to the bands.
