Summer book recommendations for good 6yo reader?

DD loves reading and is good at it. (She got 40 on the phonics test and is on Lime books though tbh we don’t bother with them at home anymore.) She’s just finishing Y1.

She’s read The Faraway Tree series, the first Harry Potter, Narnia, the Worst Witch, lots of Ronald Dahl. We could do more Blyton but I think the Famous Five etc are less suitable for her age range. (Same with the HP series.) Any recommendations for stuff that’s age appropriate and will be fun to read? Whenever we go to the library she’s immediately drawn to those Fairy/Bunny stories that make me want to gouge my own eyes out 😆 I don’t care if she wants to read them, but I’d like to invest in some better stuff too!

My children have always been advanced readers too and sometimes I’ve found it a struggle to find things that are age appropriate at the level of reading that they are at. My dd is now in year 6, but at your dds age she enjoyed a series called Zoe’s Rescue Zoo. Also how about some more classic books like Charlottes Web? David Walliams is a hit with both my dd and my 7 year old son, he also likes the Horrid Henry books and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Others to consider are the Dork Diaries series and there are some Jaqueline Wilson books for younger readers, choose well with these though as they do vary drastically with their content, some stories wouldn’t be appropriate at 6 years old.

13/26/39 etc treehouse, dogman, captain underpants?

Caroian · 11/07/2018 14:58

Isla Fisher's Marge in Charge books are good.
13 Storey Treehouse
My Naughty Little Sister
Dick King-Smith has quite a few suitable for that age.
The Jill Tomlinson Animal Stories series are quite good too.

I have a 6 year old excellent reader, although he is a boy. He is currently reading the How to Train Your Dragon Series by Cressida Cowell, although only on the second one.

Wishing Chair series? By Blyton but basically the same as the Faraway Tree.

brilliotic · 11/07/2018 15:00

Astrid Lindgren books, e.g. Ronja the Robber's Daughter?

Swallows and Amazons?

Head over to 'children's books' (section here on MN) - lots of threads about age appropriate books for able young readers there :)

I think Famous Five are fine for a six year old, I was reading them at that age and enjoying them hugely. I agree about HP though. How about:
My Naughty Little Sister
Gobbolino
Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf
Amelia Jane
Children of Green Knowe

Do they still do the summer reading challenges? I used to love those as a child

Oscha · 11/07/2018 16:12

So many good ideas here, thank you! Will ask at the library about a reading challenge-I think she’d love that...

Ds is also a good reader and did the summer reading challenge last year and loved it! This years sign up is on Saturday, not sure if it’s the same across the UK but we have ‘mischief makers’ as the theme this time.

wowsaidtheowl · 11/07/2018 16:41

My daughter loves the Ottoline series (so do I!).

Naty1 · 11/07/2018 16:52

My dd has enjoyed the 13th etc storey treehouse.
Go mo go, though that is quite easy
Charlie and chocolate factory

She wont read enid blyton yet as there arent enough pictures.
Luckily she also doesnt really like the animal books either.

Shes also trying Daisy and the trouble with.

I find the school books (2/wk) break the flow and we end up going back to a different book.

Naty1 · 11/07/2018 16:53

Ottoline is bizarre in a good way.

Mamamamamamamam · 11/07/2018 19:40

Another good Enid Blyton is Mr Galliano’s Circus. My dd loves it. The idea of a circus with performing bears etc is a bit dated but you can obv explain all that to your dc!

Mamamamamamamam · 11/07/2018 19:42

The first book I fell in love with as a child was What Katy Did (but I think I was 7).

PermanentPortakabin · 11/07/2018 19:46

Zoe’s rescue zoo series is good.

And the Rescue Princesses too - much better than the Rainbow fairy ones.

I’m trying to remember what I got for dd when she was that age...

Oh, princess mirrorbelle is quite good. And there’s a couple of other longer Julia Donaldson stories - dinosaur diary, and another animal set.

Ds is currently enjoying zoo boy and the dragon sitter books.

Oh, the Jill Tomlinson ones - he gorilla who didn’t want to grow up, the otter who... (couldn’t swim? dunno, but there’s a few of them).

SpaghettiDinner · 12/07/2018 07:05

She sounds like my daughter who has also just got 40 on her phonics test and just moved on from the lime books to a school set box. She also LOVES Rainbow Magic and Animal Ark Hmm

I leave her to read her own choices in the evening but we also struggle with finding something age appropriate with the right level of challenge. She hates anything she deems to be 'scary'.

We will do the reading challenge to encourage her to choose different things. We are currently reading 'The Girl With the Lost Smile' by Miranda Hart. Lots of new words and concepts.... it's a good book!

OiWhoTookTheGoodNames · 12/07/2018 07:24

Sadly my good reader 6 year old is very struck with those sodding Rainbow Fairies at the moment. I don't have the heart to dampen her enthusiasm as she goes into rapture at finding Tina the Toenail Fairy in the local library.

BlueChampagne · 12/07/2018 13:31

The Worst Witch
Sophie and the Shadow Woods
101 Dalmatians
Fairy Detective Agency books by Sally Gardner

Grin Grin

My DD adores the Sheltie series.

IStillDrinkCava · 12/07/2018 14:31

Oi that takes me back! Someone once described rainbow magic as a gateway drug. It was spot on, and certainly worked for DD.

OP: Daisy books by Kes Gray. So funny. DH and I still both insist on reading them when there's a new one in the house!

Muddlingalongalone · 12/07/2018 16:45

Pmsl at tina the toenail fairy!
I don't know what level lime is but dd1 is just finishing year 2 and I would recommend the daisy series & her current favourites Jeremy Strong which her class teacher recommended to me.
She also loved Horrid Henry - let's just say I prefer the rainbow fairies😂

NightmareLoon · 12/07/2018 17:21

Most of the Dick King-Smith books are ideal for young readers! (I always find loads in the charity shops)
