How does your school tell you the results?

I know/hope they would contact me if they had concerns. But is that it? Is it normal to not know anything at all?

Not even a note saying well done/brag/boast our school/class average was x

Section 7.9 ends with "For more details about what should be reported to parents, see section 9.2." But the conclusion is the same and this really isn't important, I just only trying to be helpful.

Norestformrz · 12/07/2018 17:32

This is the relevant part relating to the Phonics Screening Check. Section 9.2 is general information only.

We got no score, just if they passed or not.

shoelaces · 12/07/2018 23:11

So I still didn't get the score, just told he's showing no signs of dyslexia. We are due to get end of year 1 report soon so if it's not in there I will ask.

Ah, we did get the score this time. Someone's read the instructions in the last 3 years.

catkind · 13/07/2018 20:28

Ours was with report shoelaces, that seems quite common.

bangingmyheadoffabrickwall · 13/07/2018 20:55

My own son scored 40/40. Had a nightmare time with the school who allowed him to coast and simply moved him to the next book in their stupid book system rather than actually assess his reading regularly and amend the book band he was bringing home as necessary. He went from green to turquoise within 48 hours of sitting the test!

My own class - 85% passed. I had 3/4 children who all scored 28 - 32. And guess what? We practised reading real and pseudo words!

trumpetoftheswan · 14/07/2018 20:17

Schools should report the actual score to parents shoelaces. I don't know when you break up, but I would ask on Monday if it will be in the report and, if not, ask for it explicitly.

Although this isn't super helpful, my experience is that you have to teach DC to read at home. It's too important to leave to chance and you really can't rely on the school to do it properly, unless you are very lucky with your school.

drspouse · 17/07/2018 16:20

DS' school is relieved that we read with DS at home not because we are teaching him (he frequently tells us he can't remember a grapheme I know he's done) but because he needs more practice than school can squeeze in.
So it's helpful for those like DS who are doing OK but need a lot of practice, and a super boost for bright middle class children who are free readers before the end of Y1. It's the ones who are a) struggling and b) not getting reading at home that have the double whammy.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 17/07/2018 17:31

Not allowed to be free reader in yr1 at ds’ school and until this year they couldn’t go above purple.

drspouse · 17/07/2018 18:15

But you get my point.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 17/07/2018 18:22

Definitely. We read with and to ds6 as it helps his reading skills and also gives him a love of books

shoelaces · 17/07/2018 22:02

So we got the school report today. He has a PIRA score of 128 and 35/40. It also says he utilises a number of different strategies for reading unfamiliar words. It was framed as positive, whereas at home I make him sound it out anyway, even if he's guessed from the picture. Oh well, at least I know it now.

Finally got our results through - 40/40 but DD1 is one of those kids who took to phonics really easily as it fuelled her innate nosey bugger streak of wanting to know everything that was going on in the world. Then bloody school taught her letter names so we've had to resort to the Alpha Bravo Charlie alphabet to spell things out in front of her that she hasn't cottoned onto yet.

Ours is just tacked onto the bottom of the report comments.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 19/07/2018 19:54

92% passed at our school too this year. Highest it has ever been but it is a high performance year and was in reception too.
