Having to leave 4/5 year olds KS2 at school gate?

Hi everyone,

No idea how I do this as I’ve only joined today with the biggest bee in my bonnet!! My daughters school have introduced a new process where we are required to leave our children at the main gate to make there own way to the class!!! I would like to add there is a teacher at the gate and a few on the journey to help them find there way but this feels me with dread that I’m expected to leave my little one who’s just turnt 5 to make her own way to class! Am I being a nutter? Would you let you child? Does your school do the same? Who do I go to to complain? I’ve emailed the head, deputy, assistant and whole safe guarding team who aren’t interested and have pretty much told me I have no choice! The education authority have told me this is the schools discretion and to be completely frank I’m on the verge of a major melt down!

Sorry for the longest post and thank you if you have any advice X

4 and 5 year olds aren't KS2. They aren't even KS1 they are EYFS.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 17/04/2018 22:21

I thought KS2 was year 3 and above so not 5 year olds? I might be wrong though. I don't see a problem with it though, once they are through the gate nothing can happen to them and there is a teacher on the gate stopping anyone leaving again. What is it you are worried about?

PatriciaHolm · 17/04/2018 22:22

Why are you worried? Doesn't sound as if there is anything that could happen. Totally normal.

dementedpixie · 17/04/2018 22:22

Our school has the same policy. Doesn't bother me tbh. They don't want lots of unidentified adults in the playground

tempuser · 17/04/2018 22:22

KS2 is from age 7

missmapp · 17/04/2018 22:23

Our school does this, well parents leave eyfs at an inner gate , but they make there own way in. Plenty of staff are around to take them in, and we do let parents ofteary ones walk in, but as we start this from sept, by now all walk on their own. I know it must seem hard but it does help prepare for year 1.

Happygolucky009 · 17/04/2018 22:24

We leave ours in the playground lined up, the teacher takes the kids in. There simply is no room for parents to head into the school and it works fine.

Hermagsjesty · 17/04/2018 22:25

I can understand your worry but I don’t think it’s a safe guarding issue. If there is a teacher on the gate and others en route it is probably safer and less chaotic than with lots of adults milling around.

PinkCalluna · 17/04/2018 22:26

No children in our school get walked to the classroom.

Even primary ones (4/5 yos) are allowed to walk to/from school alone.

When the bell rings all the kids line up in the appropriate place and walk to class.

Everyone manages fine.

Itscolderoutside · 17/04/2018 22:26

Surely they find their own way about during the school day anyway. There are teachers on hand too so I don't see the problem. In fact there are fewer people coming onto school premises which improves security levels.

Blankscreen · 17/04/2018 22:27

My son's old school did this from reception. He was 4 years and 3 weeks when he started and coped fine.

AmysTiara · 17/04/2018 22:28

Our school does this. It's always worked fine so I don't get the angst. Leave at gate they walk up a path and into school. Or ks2 run across playground and into school.

Jassy81 · 17/04/2018 22:28

My son is 7 and he is ks1 and I leave him at the doors but tbh if there are alot of teachers about i wouldn't worry to much think they will be safe

MsJolly · 17/04/2018 22:31

It's actually safer for all of the children in school not to have hoards of adults walking around the grounds first thing. Once they've settled in initially in September I see no problem with this.

Fairenuff · 17/04/2018 22:38

So the child leaves a responsible adult at the gate and walks across a playground to a responsible adult at the entrance of the building? What's wrong with that?

Starlight2345 · 17/04/2018 22:44

I think you need to look at your anxiety .

What do you think happens at break and dinner time ?

I wish they did this at my Dc ‘s school no staff on playground so we have to wait till the bell goes

MammaCS · 17/04/2018 22:50

Sorry she’s FS2

When I say gate, ours is on the road not directly into a playground so a kid could easily turn around and come out. My fear is if she came out and something bad happened it would be 3:10 before anyone even knew! It was only last month that a man tried to take a child!

In regards to people in the playground they still have nursery gate open so have parents in the playground - so moot point really!

But you said there was a teacher at the gate.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 17/04/2018 22:53

The gate at our school is on a main road as well but the other side of the gate is school property. There can't be a main road on both sides of the gate? What is beyond the gate? How will any child get back out of the gate if there is a teacher on the gate? What is FS2?

Fairenuff · 17/04/2018 22:56

When you said leave them at the gate, I thought you meant in the morning?

Surely they don't just send them out at the end of the day without knowing if there is anyone to meet them at the gate?

AutoFilled · 17/04/2018 22:57

At DD school year R children starts to be dropped at the gate from the summer term. (Summer term starts after Easter break). This is to prepare them for year 1. They are 4/5 year olds. There is a teacher at the gate. Parents see their children went inside the gate and leave. It’s entirely normal and you are crazy and over protective.

Fairenuff · 17/04/2018 22:58

Oh wait, I get it, you mean if she walks back out in the morning. She won't do that. Once they are in, the staff will make sure no-one walks out again.

PinkCalluna · 17/04/2018 23:01

Our playground doesn’t have a teacher in it before 8:55am. So kids walk themselves to school and wait until the bell rings.

Why would it be 3:10pm before anyone knew she was missing? Surely they do a morning roll call?

Caulk · 17/04/2018 23:06

Totally normal. Children find their way around the school by themselves during the day, they can find their classroom.

What did the school say when you expressed your concern?

Lucked · 17/04/2018 23:11

We are only allowed past the school gate on the very first day of term. Lots of staff and older children around to help in the first few weeks. They find there way back to class after break and lunch on their own.

You can stand at the gate until they have all gone in.
