Just spent £54 on ds' school uniform for P1 and that's not anywhere near all of it!!!

Got him 2 school sweatshirts
2 school poloshirts
1 PE tshirt
1 Fleece
and 1 tie

Thank goodness my mum offered to buy his uniform - we've not even started on shoes, trousers, jogging bottoms, PE shorts, gym shoes, school bag, lunch box, name tapes blah blah blah.

As the school only has 26 pupils there aren't that many uniform sales!

This is going to add up into the hundreds! We're on quite a tight budget as it is, but I'm sure there must be folks struggling to manage all this!

can't you just buy the rest at ASDA/Tesco?
and buy a laundry pen from mothercare - it doesn't fade when you wash - top tip from lmb

Do you really have to buy specific school ones? Many of the high street stores do polos etc very cheaply, including M&S and Sainsbury's. Is the fleece mandatory, we can buy them at our school, but most children just wear an alternative coat. I've never bought the logo'd polos, they are hidden under jumper for most of the year. We have one logo'd sweatshirt and a couple of chainstore ones too.

bobsmum · 02/05/2007 17:28

Definitely going to get the rest from Asda, but even so - it's a lot of money all in one go.

Pity my poor mum who had to buy me a blazer and school hat as well as regulation navy knickers

Sweatshirts and polos and PE shirt are logo'd, admittedly the fleece is optional - I threw that one in cos my mum's forking out

Tie is Tartan btw - ds loves it, but it really is twee.

Not waterproof apparently. The current P1 mums (10 kids!!!) are campaigning for a change,so goodness knows what we might end up with.

Actually I think that this should be added to the uniform list

Is this a state or private school? It seems a bit excessive to me, I have just bought a pack of three polo shirts for £4 and a gingham dress for dd who starts P1 in August. I realise I have got more to get but really don't want to spend a vast amount of money.

Lilliput · 02/05/2007 17:44

Dress was £3.50 btw

bobsmum · 02/05/2007 17:49

State school - but we are in a rural area, so maybe they hoik the prices up a bit

Maybe I've just got carried away - first time and all that.

I guess because there are two uniforms - smart and casual it all adds up. If there was just one tie and loads of white shirts and one pair of trousers then i guess that would work out cheaper. The casual uniform of polo and sweat shirt and joggers etc seems to be what most of them wear, but you need the smart one too.

What to the really hard up families do? I think making people buy uniform from the school is really unfair.

If I was daft enough to buy a dress from the school ( not for ds of course ) it would be £10.25!!!

That's the thing - my mum's buying and if we were then I guess we'd just buy one of everything and wash a lot, but it's still a big outlay. I hate paying full price for anything!

If only I could buy it all on Ebay...

You can buy polo shirts, fleeces and t-shirts dead cheap. Next time buy them elsewhere abd save lots of cash

bobsmum · 02/05/2007 18:05

But they wouldn't have the school logo on them, that's why they were so pricey. Maybe once I'm a hardened P2 mum then I'll send him in more rebellious uniform, but I'm too chicken for now. Secretly disappointed he doesn't have to wear those cute grey shorts...

the gingham dress was also from sainsburys, I don't think there were any green ones. The polo shirts are really nice with flower buttons.

pointydog · 02/05/2007 18:08

But it's not obligatory to have the school logo on.

As long as they have the school sweatshirt they all look pretty smart. And apart from two months of the year, polo shirts are always covered up by sweatshirt.

I understand you want it all to look good but really, you can't beat the cheap high street stores for these basics.

cleaninglady · 02/05/2007 18:46

This year I have a DS2 going to School and have learned by some of my 'mistakes' with DS1. I haven't ordered any School logo polo shirts as the quality isn't great and haven't ordered the fleece as DS1 had one and lost it and it has never been missed TBH (although it was a lovely fleece, very good quality).

I had to buy uniform for DS1 and DS2 this year and even although I made these cutbacks I still managed to spend £72 between the both of them.

DS2 going into P1, I'm frightened I'll leave him without any uniform as DS1 has no cast-offs for him, DS1 got three years out of his uniform as I bought it so big, it needs chucked now.
