How often do you expect your YR1 child to be read with?

Hi, I was just wondering how often someone reads with your YR1 child one on one in school? Is it once a week or less than that?

Also, if you are expected to keep a joint reading record with the school (the kind that you fill in every time you read with your child at home), how often does your child's teacher/teaching assistant put a comment in the book?

Thank you

One to one reading once a week with a TA.

Guided reading in small groups, once a week with a teacher and then they complete a reading task in their groups without an adult on the other 4 days.

One to one with a parent volunteer - maybe once a week or once a fortnight.

When I worked overseas in private schools I was able to hear all my children read every day, but I had much smaller classes and a full time TA.

Alanna1 · 04/10/2017 18:55

I have no idea, is this something I should ask?
My DDs read aloud to me every everning.

chickenowner · 04/10/2017 18:56

Miaow You are basing that one your experience in one school. We couldn't go on school trips, walks to the local park or church, or do many other things without parent volunteers.

You may have put the teachers back up if you're coming across as telling them how to organize their reading?? I expect that the teachers knows what to do already!

GreenTulips · 04/10/2017 19:07

Schools seem to do everything to make it hard to volunteer.

They also make it difficult for difficult parents

I don't think DD1 read to anyone 1:1 in year 1 apart from her new teacher in autumn 2 before she formally took over the class in Jan. Guided reading every week.
However 4 weeks into yr2 & she's already read once to ta & once to a volunteer.

rollerbladersrule · 04/10/2017 19:43

DD reads to the teacher once a week, at that point they also put a comment in the book but we are expected to comment on how they read daily then when the teacher reads with DD she will also read my notes to guide whether she needs to go up a level or having difficulties.

Miaow, I know what you mean. Every year the teachers ask for volunteers at the beginning of the year. One year I said a few times I would be happy to help but they never got back to me, probably because I don't do pick up, but a note in the bag would have reached me. Another year I got as far as the teacher saying oh yes Ms Pencil that would be lovely please come in on this day. So I came in, but the receptionist refused to let me through because I hadn't been CRB checked or whatever it's called now, also refused to contact the teacher who had asked me to come in until I really insisted as I didn't want her to think I had let her down. Seemed to think I had just decided off my own bat to mosey on down and demand to be allowed to hear children read. She actually left me in tears.

So this can happen. On the other hand, once I did jump through the hoops, I have done three years helping in different classrooms, and it is true they really need helpers, but it's like they can't get organised enough to sort them out in the first place.

I teach Y2, but each student is in a guided reading group three times per week (once with me, once with my TA, once with my student teacher that I have this year). Everyone gets to read with a parent helper at least once per week (I have at least two parents in during reading each day). I do a one to one running record on each student at least once per fortnight (although it can stretch to every three weeks depending on what else is going on). Students can come in anywhere from 8:30 to start of school at 9:00 and do silent reading, and student teacher and TA will randomly sit down next to kids and listen to them read. Students who I know don't read at home will read to myself, TA, student teacher, or parent helper at least four times per week.

We don't record on the their home reader book when we read with them, although we do have a record on our ipads that we check off when each student is read with so we know we are touching base with everyone and make a note so that we can all access it. Friday lunchtimes I grab the home reader diaries and see if they're reading at home or not, and make a few 'well dones' and some stickers for those who are, but in general most parents are pretty slack at filling it in.

holidayqueriwifi · 06/10/2017 20:25

Every day.

Figgygal · 06/10/2017 20:27

One teacher one ta 30 kids once a week

Sunshine200 · 06/10/2017 20:58

My year 1 child has only been read with once since going back to school (as far as I can see from the log) - would have expected more. Was more in reception.

Onceuponatime21 · 08/10/2017 10:53

Years R to 4 read every day, either to a TA or a volunteer parent. They are expected to read every night at home, but school does say that they know it's not always possible and there is no come back if miss the odd night. No idea what would happen is you persistently don't read at home.

But we are very lucky that there are lots of parents in school volunteering to enable this. And the school gets amazing results. They do see it as something very important.

Teacher reads 1:1 occasionally - often if they are going up a book band and teacher wants to check. And then guided reading etc in class.

MsAwesomeDragon · 08/10/2017 10:58

I think in y1 dd was only read with one to one maybe once a half term or so. There was lots of guided reading happening but one to one reading was quite rare.

Now in y3 I think she's read with an adult at school 3 times. Their reading record is checked once a week and we get messages from the teacher or TA. I like it. Once a week the year 6 pupils come down and read with the year 3s, their comments are lovely and misspelled

rainraingoawaycomeback · 08/10/2017 11:05

Child in Y1
Reads at school 3 or 4 times a week to either the TA/Teacher. We are expected to listen and comment each night in the home/school reading record.

Ktown · 08/10/2017 11:09

My child gets a teacher/ta comment 3x per week usually.
We get 4-5 books per week so we need to read most nights. As a result I leave weekends as a break normally.

DrJLee · 09/10/2017 18:46

Once a week is usual.

As ever, it's in the schools interest for your child to do well- don't worry :)

user789653241 · 09/10/2017 19:49

Tbh, I think how often the child read to teacher/ Ta at school doesn't really matter if you read with them at home.
My ds hardly ever read to teacher or Ta at school, it didn't hinder him from progressing.

Daffydil · 09/10/2017 19:57

We get comments in his reading record and new books 3-4 times a week. I'm not sure if that's 1:1 or not. I don't think he's getting special support (anymore, he was in reception) as he's on a level appropriate to his year.

In reception last year he read once a week with someone.

Wait4nothing · 09/10/2017 20:00

Weekly guided reading in a group with teacher - this isn’t always recorded in reading record (as its logged in other ways)
Guided reading in a group 3 times with a ta again not recorded in record
These are both done with phonics books according to sounds that week (new or revised)
Then minimum of once with a ta 1to1 that includes changing reading book if necessary. Some children are targeted so read 2 times a week or even daily. Teacher reads 1to1 infrequently - probably once a term (so 3 times a year) unless specifically targeted.

relaxitllbeok · 09/10/2017 20:01

Daily was standard for the first two years at my DC's school - this is something I think of every time someone says state or private makes no difference at primary level!

user789653241 · 09/10/2017 20:10

I really don't understand the need for teacher or TA to read with each child so often. Even if it took 5 minutes a child, it takes 5 X 30 = 150 minutes. It's quite a lot out of school hours.
Do people really want teacher to listen to each child read that often,?
I'd rather want teacher to be teaching the children something I can't at home.

sirfredfredgeorge · 09/10/2017 20:20

Me either irvineoneohone I can imagine a lot more productive things, and if they do have that time, I'd much rather they prioritised the kids most in need of support (both because I'd rather they'd help the most in need, but also because raising the bottom is likely to reduce disruption and demands that might harm my kids education)

I wonder if it's related to reading levels, and how annoyed people often are that the kid is on one "too easy", as if the teachers are reading so frequently then that's less likely? So that's why people want it.

Once a term seems plenty to me, if from the other reading that happens in class there's some reason to suspect an issue.
