Am I being weird and paranoid or rightly cautious

Vote now! Wink

DD (aged 5) has been given a letter re a school trip to local farm - one of those family day out types with petting zoo things as well as part of it being a real working farm.

Its an all day trip, needs to take a lunch.

Thing is, DD and I went a few months ago and whilst it was worthwhile and I don't mind her going again, when we went to wash our hands the water was cold more like freezing in all of the taps we tried, in all of the hand washing blocks.

I hate washing hands in cold water, it feels like they are not washed. I hate the thought of DD not being able to wash hands properly, especially at a farm and then they will be having lunch there. I can just imagine her ending up ill.

Would I be a) weird and paranoid to mention it to teacher or b)rightly cautious?

Thanks in advance

The original comment in the context of advice regarding a farm visit was that anti bacterial gels aren't nearly as good as soap and water ...which is a fact. Unless you think the children aren't going to be touching anything?

From the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention

Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to reduce the number of microbes on them in most situations. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can quickly reduce the number of microbes on hands in some situations, but sanitizers do not eliminate all types of germs.

Hand sanitizers may not be as effective when hands are visibly dirty or greasy.

Swallowing alcohol-based hand sanitizers can cause alcohol poisoning.

Hand sanitizers might not remove harmful chemicals, like pesticides and heavy metals, from hands.

Me too. Hand sanitizer after hand washing. I would also practice it at home to make sure the hands were were washed properly.

Well you learn something new everyday! I have got to the age of 45 thinking you needed warm water (above 45 degrees) to kill germs off hands (with soap obviously).

Is it the same with bar soap though? Can't use the anti bac liquid soap, makes my hands dry.

The anti bac soap was no better than ordinary soap in the tests both removed 99% of germs

I'm a teacher and I teach 4-5 year olds and if their parents mentioned it to me, I would think it was irrational and over cautious. There is only a cold tap in my classroom and the children are fine! Nobody catches anything! Wouldn't mention it to the teacher, there is so much to think about, it might go in one ear and out the other..

Surprised to log on to find this thread has 5 pages!
Somewhere earlier on (page 1 or 2 I think) I provided links as to why cold water is fine and why alcoholic hand gel is no use for farm bacteria.
So I was somewhat surprised to see posters stating the contrary, interspersed with some sneery, bordering on bitchy comments (nice).
Also anecdotes of working on a farm and rolling around in shit (loosely paraphrasing, of course) does not constitute evidence.
Google e.coli and haemolytic uraemic syndrome, it is more than a dodgy tummy.
Maybe those that have had long term exposure to farm animals have a degree of immunity so hence can roll around like a pig in shit without falling ill.
I have not looked up the evidence to confirm or refute this and I am not going to bother as it'll be ignored and more posters will make up their own versions of the truth, claim it as fact then proceed to tell the OP she is bonkers, the teachers will have good laugh at her expense and she will be forever be THAT parent.
