Hello

Any teachers out there who could help me..... my dd was exceeding in nursery and reception. At the end of yr 1 she was meeting expectations. Will she be just taught to meet expectations or is there still opportunity for her to 'exceed' ? She is currently yr 2.

Thank you in advance

I think you can get better information about what your child can do. If they can achieve all the tasks in the part of the curriculum they have been taught, then they have achieved those elements of the curriculum. If the teacher is setting them work to explore the curriculum in more depth, or asking them to do peer to peer coaching because they are able to explain the concept to another child (which helps both children) then you know your child is doing very well. Conversely if your child is not able to do the work required, but with further input will be able to, you should be told this. This is why it is so much easier for parents if schools explain what they are teaching and how they are assessing progress. For schools that are clear about assessment, it is perfectly possible to do this. No school can afford to go into an Ofsted inspection without knowing the progress profile of all the children. If the school knows it, they can share it with you. If they cannot, what would they say to Ofsted?

I think that it's worth googling the EYFs and the National Curriculum to see what the programme of study involves and what the end of year expectations are.

I've taught in Reception and Year 1 and think that it's much easier for a bright child to be Exceeding in Reception than it is to achieve exceeding in other year groups. The goal posts have been moved so much with the new curriculum that even reaching the expected standard is quite a challenge.

It's worth remembering there are only national expectations for the end of each Key Stage (Y2 and Y6)
