Hi, I'm at TA in a year 2 class and I'm looking to set up a good reading reward scheme for the kids when they read at home. We tried one last year where the kids had stickers on a chart for how many times they read at home , then the child with the most got a dip in the teachers box of treats ( pencils, rubbers etc) .

The only problem was the same boy won every week and always got the treat so the scheme kind of withered away.

I'm looking for a fun way to reward reading at home - help!

TIA

No I didn't. I didn't say anything about my own practice, you just inferred that and had (yet another) snipe.

I was using it as an example (with hindsight a bad example, that is now the third time i have said it but you have a great way of ignoring what you want and just seeing the odd bit here and there that you want), as to how mastery is important and how parents can sometimes want to rush through the curriculum.

So I apoligise for calling you a prick, but it was late, I was tired.

I am not sorry though for the rest, I believe you are one of those teachers that has been in the job a long time, not really willing to take on new ideas and advice. Because you know best and can highlight the odd lines here in the curriculum to try and prove your point. I have worked with people like you before. You are usually right, but my way works and my way has longer term benefits imo so I wont be changing.

There is plenty of overseeing in my school, my SLT are happy, my parents are happy and the children are progressing well. We follow the curriculum properly, as would be expected and the academy are also happy with my work.
If you are ever down in the kent neck of the woods, you have an open invitation to come see my class, you never know, you might even learn something. (for what it is worth, I run my Y1 class like a FS class and intend to do the same when I get moved to Y2).

As for this discussion, I am going to bow out of it, as it has turned into a slanging match between 2 people who should know better. I will keep an eye on it but unless any parents ask a direct question to myself I wont reply again.
I will stay on the primary forum for now as I believe i have things to offer parents. And I post on the staffroom forum to support staff. But other than that, I dont really want to post on mumsnet if it is going to be just the same as all the other parts of the mumsnet forums that I get jumped on just for having a different opinion

No one has questioned your phonic teaching

Twice? And I don't believe you were 'tired' - I saw your misogyny displayed on another thread last night, and so will anyone else with the gumption to use the search facility. That, and your disrespectful posts about parents on this thread will give most people a good idea of the kind of poster/teacher you are, TeacherBob.

Ah. The Joy of Search.

So anyways....

The reading reward scheme in my classroom is "Reading Cats and Dogs". It is based on a contest that was run a few years ago where students at schools would tally up their reading times and compete against other classes/schools. I divide the students in to the 'cats' and the 'dogs' (making sure it is a fairly even mix) and they keep a tally of how much they are reading, whether it be at home, in class, break times, guided reading, etc. At the end of the week, either the cats or the dogs get the trophy. The kids really enjoy it, and they all come straight in and put their minutes of reading on the board when they arrive.
