...can I ask how often they do PE? Just wondering what's the norm...dd will have PE once a fortnight...

Twice a week for us in Y3 and Y5

idontlikealdi · 08/09/2016 09:26

Once a week, plus they do something I've forgotten the name of, every day in the classroom for 20 minutes. A get moving type initiative.

Just started Y1, was the same last year in reception.

Floggingmolly · 08/09/2016 09:28

Year 5, twice weekly. They also do two morning (before school starts) running clubs. These are voluntary, though.

alwayssurprised · 08/09/2016 09:37

Twice weekly one indoor session and one outdoor session. I am not very confident on the quality and range of activity though, cause it sounds like it was dance all the time last two years in R and Y1.

PatriciaHolm · 08/09/2016 09:52

One indoor and one outdoor a week, plus running a mile every day.

alwayssurprised · 08/09/2016 10:01

Patricia the running is a good idea! Do the children get changed for it every day though?

noramum · 08/09/2016 10:12

Once or twice. In Spring (weather permitting) and Summer they do one indoor and one outdoor session per week. Otherwise just one indoor.

In Y4 they go swimming for 8 weeks.

The school also offers lot of sport before and after clubs, some are free.

sirfredfredgeorge · 08/09/2016 10:33

Reception - once a week, often cancelled or "yoga" - which was more of a keep quiet time, than physical activity.

Year 1+ at least twice a week with dedicated PE teacher.

imip · 08/09/2016 10:37

Once a week with class teacher. Specialists are brought in for some classes eg, tennis, fencing, bocce. In y3 they swim the whole year. They also participate in local festival-type sports events. A number of after-school sports clubs, and in summer term a very popular running club after school that adults can join in with.

NotCitrus · 08/09/2016 10:39

Twice a week, R to Y2, then extra 'PE support group' in Y2. They didn't seem to bother getting changed for most of them beyond Reception, according to ds who might have been lying and swearing he didn't have any PE kit, but he did PE anyway.

PitchFork · 08/09/2016 10:44

twice a week in autumn/winter term (1x gym 1x swimming).
3x in summer term (1x gym 1x track&field 1x swimming)

Loulou2kent · 08/09/2016 10:54

2 times a week with external PE teachers. He does 3 other physical things a week after school etc. I'm sure as they get into year 5/6 they do swimming at school too.

onemouseplace · 08/09/2016 11:16

(KS1) PE once a week with dedicated PE teacher, Dance once a week as well.

PatriciaHolm · 08/09/2016 11:26

They don't get changed, no, but can put their PE trainers on.

Millionprammiles · 08/09/2016 11:29

Thanks all - once a fortnight definitely doesn't seem to be the norm then :(

There are some after school sports type clubs at dd's school but oversubscribed so not many places and some start at 4.30pm so rely on also using the ASC between 3.10-4.30 which doesn't provide a meal. I don't think dd could last between 12pm and 6pm without a meal and do an hours sports with no real rest, at age 4.

We do swimming and a sports club with dd outside of school and I guess they play at break times, its a bit disappointing though, thought it would be at least once a week. (This is an OFSTED o/s school too Confused

Twice a week here (in the London 'burbs) from Reception. Mine are in year 2 & year 5, the older one starts school swimming lessons next week so will only do 1 PE session a week in school iyswim.

Millionprammiles · 08/09/2016 12:53

I know I sounds like one of those 'whingy' parents (see other thread...) but is there anyone else who's Reception aged child only does PE once a fortnight??

OP posts:
HarveySchlumpfenburger · 08/09/2016 13:28

Is it just in reception or the whole school?

There's no requirement for reception to have a PE lesson at all.

redskytonight · 08/09/2016 13:30

My DC are older now, but they didn't have specific PE lessons at all at the start of Reception (had worked up to once a week by the end of the year, but most of that time was spent changing IIRC!). The idea is that the Reception curriculum includes lots of active play anyway, so no need for specific PE lessons

Millionprammiles · 08/09/2016 15:39

I didn't think to ask if that increases in Yr 1 or beyond...maybe it does. I think we'll just try to make sure we do some sports and stuff with her outside school, its a nice way for dd to meet kids outside of school anyway.
I really didn't need to buy two lots of PE kit then Grin

GrumpyInsomniac · 08/09/2016 16:17

It's twice a week for us here in Y6, as it was in Y5, but it's still not much when you consider the school keep them in for wet play, so no exercise on those days.

Bitlost · 08/09/2016 21:15

Twice a week. We have a dedicated PE teacher employed by the school. Once a fortnight is not enough.

citykat · 08/09/2016 22:25

Our Reception don't have a proper PE lesson as they are outside a lot anyway. Y1-Y6 twice a week.

SpookyRachel · 08/09/2016 22:31

I have two children at a London state primary, and I have no idea how often they do PE. Or maths. Or Literacy. Or indeed have assemblies.

Failed again Blush
