Hi everyone,

I'm a single parent and currently earn under £10k pa and receive working tax credits. I was led to believe this made us eligible for funding for primary school as it would be the equivalent of FSM. However after applying to the Council I have been told that BECAUSE I am in receipt of working tax credits I am not eligible.
How does this work? Am I meant to give them up so her school can get funding? Shock Confused

The system is flawed working parents on low wages miss out on things like FSM even though they may have significantly less income than those receiving certain benefits

Jeffrey yes the " ever six" rule means Starry ones ds will still receive pp even though she is in receipt of wtc.

ive got 3,all in education primary and college so i know all about trips, extra's etc but considering we are getting free education i dont think its to much to ask to provide our childrens school with a contribution towards our childrens education, they benefit not the school

extra things take alot of organizing and effort from the school and its will get more expensive as they go through the school,so you better be prepared

and yes im on benefit and have never had any maintanance for my three from their fathers but i budget for it and always pay apart from a subsidised £30,in reality i could bring up the PP but i feel i can contribute so i do

and i dont begrudge the school a penny from me as their educating my children, giving them great variety and experiences that i maybe couldnt provide

imo schools do a very difficult job and am always amazed how some people view them

If you are struggling to pay for trips, then some schools will let you pay over a longer period of time. Some also manage to 'find' a bit of money from the PTA to pay some of the trip funds for families they know are struggling, but you do have to let them know.

seasidesally I think it depends on how much money schools are asking for and how often. Some are asking for totally ridiculous sums over the course of a year or term. It's nice for the children to get lots of trips, but doesn't really work out if they're missing out on stuff at home to pay for it.

yes some schools might ask for large amounts but most round here anyway are pretty much the same

moaning about paying £7 for a pe kit that will last upto 2yrs is just ridiculous and if op thinks thats bad then really what was expected,a free kit

Your dd still receives pp StarryOne

DS but yes ..He doesn't get FSM but PP is allocated for 6 years even if only eligible for a short while..

However.. I am far better off now I am working than I was on benefits.. I do pay for his trips school dinners.
