Where can I buy girls' school shorts that aren't culottes?

I have a tomboy. She's not keen on froufrou culotte shorts. Has anyone seen any school shorts for girls that actually look like shorts?

I got some slightly longer tailored city shorts as Grazia would have it girls´ school shorts at Sainsbury´s for my DD and they were about £7. She also wears ordinary every day boys shorts as she hates the culottes too

CodyKing · 11/04/2016 21:12

Luckily our school doesn't have silly rules about girls wearing skirts

Well said! We have moved on from 1950 yes?

Tidypidy · 11/04/2016 21:19

Could you shorten her trousers into shorts? I did this for ds1 when it was clear they would be too short by September anyway.

G1raffe · 11/04/2016 21:23

My daughter wears trousers in the winter (one of very very few). Never seen a girl in shorts at school, they all wear gingham dresses. Might ask her...

EskSmith · 11/04/2016 21:37

DD2's school is in the 21st Century. It doesn't have girls uniform & boys uniform. It simply has a list of approved uniform items.

Still it can be a peer pressure thing. Dd2 just doesn't like skirts/dresses - she doesn't feel they are practical for the things she wants to do. She has been the only girl in her class in trousers and shorts but a good few of the others are starting to follow suit as they are growing out of their original uniform purchases now.

G1raffe · 11/04/2016 21:38

I suspect school would tell us it isnt school uniform for girls... would I be able to argue...

smellyboot · 11/04/2016 21:47

Any school insisting on skirts for girls is in the 1950s but one of our local ones does and I found another the other day whilst there for another reason. All the prep schools near us do too.
A lot buy skirts in reception and move to trousers in the winter. As they go up the school in our school from yr1 upwards the proportion of trousers increases a lot too - I assume as girls choose more what they wear.
I never understand why they cant just wear what suits them.

There are loads of articles about Tomboy being a very outdated term in modern life - schools need to catch up some times!

AndNowItsSeven · 11/04/2016 23:45

Skirts look much smarter .

paxillin · 11/04/2016 23:58

Not on mine hanging upside down on the climbing frame or siting in yoga pose displaying knickers. I can see why some girls are more comfortable in shorts, boys don't have to display their underwear no matter how the play or sit. Once 7+ many girls become a bit uncomfortable doing this.

AndNowItsSeven · 12/04/2016 00:22

The girls in my dad's school wear thin shirts under their skirts , I think that's the norm.

smellyboot · 12/04/2016 07:03

Thin shirts under skirts? I'm not sure I get what you mean

AuntieStella · 12/04/2016 07:11

I think she means thin shorts (not shirts) and it's not really the norm, though it's not unusual either.

At primary age, the differences in body shape is slight (other than for any older girls who have started puberty) so uniform shorts will be unisex in practice so I suggest OP just buys from 'boy' ranges.

megletthesecond · 12/04/2016 07:29

and if skirts look smarter then the boys can wear them too Wink .

DD wears her brothers old school shorts, the ones with combat pockets. She also has some girls shorts (sainsburys?) with, what I like to think is, a pretty Dior-esque bow details on the belt loops.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 12/04/2016 07:33

andnow just because you think skirts look smarter and that's your oppinion. Doesn't mean they actually do or it's even that important at primary school age!

I used to look a mess in skirts, and massively impractical because I spent my break times building in the brick area on my own or playing football, and as I got older rugby with the boys, I'd come in to class with mud and grazes on my knees, socks rolled right down round my ankles or tights looking like Nora batty. Even at my very formal and strict secondary school the teachers commented how they were actually more than happy to turn a blind eye to my very obvious rule breaking because trousers looked smarter on me, because it gave me the freedom to be active and saved me looking like I'd been dragged through a hedge backwards by the end of the day!

Any way since then there's been a number of cases that say that you can not specify that girls can't wear trousers/shorts. Even ant your DD's school, I suspect if you actually look at the uniform list it will be they can wear trousers should they want too. (Unless it's a all girls school, then there's no boys wearing trousers so it's not an issue of equality) and the shorts under skirts thing is actually horiiable, and many schools have banned it. It's skirts or shorts not both! In Ireland many schools use a unisex tracksuit as the uniform for junior and senior infants (first two years of primary school)

Anyway op yes nice boys shorts are fine, they may indeed be more comfortable.

G1raffe · 12/04/2016 07:37

I don't like shorts under skirts. Only really seen that on mn though not at my school. Kids should be kids to play.

I'd be interested if my daughter wanted to wear shorts instead how I find out if school would have a problem with it...

idontlikealdi · 12/04/2016 07:47

Reception DTs were so excited to wear their gingham dresses today - first day back after Easter.

Then they starting jumping around and doing forward rolls, as they do before school, and were already irritated with them. I think we'll be moving to shorts soon.

They have some 'skorts' that we got in America for home and they loved them. I wonder if you can get uniform colours here?

CodyKing · 12/04/2016 07:56

Asda are great for skorts

DD school have girls put shots on fro break times under their skirts - all those cart wheels -

Id rather they be active then body conscious

G1raffe · 12/04/2016 08:23

Surely that's teaching them to be body conscious. I think thats quite sad.

CodyKing · 12/04/2016 08:25

Well girls grow up quicker these days. They don't want their knickers in show!

paxillin · 12/04/2016 08:45

I quite like the gingham dresses. They do look charmingly old fashioned and cute. I suspect that is one of the reasons (apart from the knickers on show) that why girls want shorts when they are in the later years of primary.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 12/04/2016 09:05

I actually read codys post as that's why they knew where to buy skorts to save her daughter from going through the body conscious having to put shorts underskirts. I agree G1raffee!
It's understandable girls don't want their knickers on show so they wear shorts

uhoh1973 · 12/04/2016 09:10

Why can't a girl wear 'boys' shorts? What is the difference??

SuburbanRhonda · 12/04/2016 09:21

Our girls wear gingham dresses in the summer. They're a godsend when it's hot and you only have one item of clothing to take off for PE.

paxillin · 12/04/2016 09:35

Try boy shorts before byuing though. I found boys' school uniform broader, whilst normal fit is fine in girls' clothes I had to get slim fit in boys' shorts.
