Does this worry you?

I'm so worried about my children going through the education system at the moment. I can't afford to send them to an independent school.

www.theguardian.com/teacher-network/2015/nov/14/secret-teacher-cant-bear-ofsted-going-teach-australia

As a primary teacher myself I can confirm that this is not just one teacher feeling like this, in fact i can't think of a single teacher who doesn't feel like this. It makes me so sad.

What can we do to stop it?

I quoted directly from the article when I first mentioned it mrsz.

But hey, my kids are no longer educated in Oz so their glut of teachers doesn't really concern me.

What does concern me is all the teachers leaving/being broken by teaching in this country which was the point of the original article rather than where they were going to.

OP I feel exactly the same. I've left teaching to be a SAHM and I am unlikely to be back unless some of the issues are resolved (and I manage to get my confidence back) but the system is in such a state I worry about the provision in a few years time for my DCs. So many super teachers out there being dumbed down by the SLT and their fear of and second guessing of OFSTED.

mrz · 17/11/2015 18:11

Up to 90% in some states is different to that being the national picture.
In some areas of the UK there is also a glut of teachers or teachers not qualified in shortage subjects just as in other parts there is a teacher "crisis"

jellyfrizz · 17/11/2015 18:23

I would say that pretty much is the national picture, the 4 biggest states make up 88% of the population in Oz.

Where is there a glut in England?

OP posts:
jellyfrizz · 17/11/2015 18:30

Yes 29herzie, it's so sad. I know so many wonderful teachers who are just being broken.

mrsz, as I have suggested a couple of times perhaps Ofsted could actually do something about it and mark down schools with stupid policies. Exhausted and demoralised teachers obviously have a negative affect on pupil's learning. Putting a video on YouTube isn't going to change the minds of the type of SLT who put pointless and time consuming policies in place.

OP posts:
mrz · 17/11/2015 18:44

If you work in a school you know how long they have in school to look at paperwork ... Do you really believe they have time to scrutinise every policy in detail or that a school with bullying SLT will show them the genuine documents? Perhaps staff should draw their attention to ridiculous practice?
BTW Shirley Clarke is the one responsible for green for growth tickled pink purple progress etc etc
We had a new DH who tried to introduce everything in triplicate pre Ofsted fortunately SLT stood up for common sense

mrz · 17/11/2015 18:45

I'm not sure what more Ofsted can do they make public their expect ions and write to schools ...

jellyfrizz · 17/11/2015 18:55

I would hope they would do book looks. From that they could see approx how long it would take and whether it has value to a child.

They could then ask about policy & give any school with stupid policy an immediate requires improvement.

And I've never actually had the pleasure of an Ofsted visit but I would hope it would be long enough to do their job properly otherwise what's the fucking point?

Where did you say that glut of teachers in England was mrsz?

OP posts:
mrz · 17/11/2015 19:12

yes and I'm aware they do comment on it.

mrz · 17/11/2015 19:13

certainly in my area there are lots of primary teachers unable to find their first job

jellyfrizz · 17/11/2015 19:15

Would it be in the north west of England where they 'only' have 300 unfilled vacancies a year and consider that a success?

www.independent.co.uk/news/education/education-news/finders-keepers-181743.html

OP posts:
mrz · 17/11/2015 19:21

No it wouldnt
300 teachers from 1? 2? 3? University/ies?

jellyfrizz · 17/11/2015 19:37

A quick look on TES shows that there are primary teaching vacancies in every region.

Most schools don't even recruit through TES as it's too expensive.

Schools can't fill teaching posts around here (SE but not London)-there's lots of supplies being used. I've honestly never seen so many pages of jobs on the LEA websites in October/November-usually they are empty until February/March!

32ndfloorandabitdizzy · 17/11/2015 21:25

I don't know anywhere where there is a glut of primary teachers. Norfolk?

rollonthesummer · 18/11/2015 07:42

Me neither-whereabouts in the country are you, Mrz?

kesstrel · 18/11/2015 09:13

"It’s early days, but I have seen a possible link between the odds of a teacher crying and that of being told by a member of SLT that they are not trying hard enough in the classroom (for example, ‘bad behaviour is because the teacher hasn’t made the lessons fun enough’ crops up quite a lot)".

thequirkyteacher.wordpress.com/2015/11/15/being-an-obtreperous-arse-for-the-good-of-mankind/

Someone in the comments to this article makes the suggestion that Ofsted inspectors should talk to teachers in confidence. Or perhaps they could post surveys to them?

UnDeuxTroisCatsSank · 18/11/2015 09:35

What does SLT stand for?

kesstrel · 18/11/2015 11:15

Senior leadership team. The headteacher and other managers.

hibbleddible · 18/11/2015 13:20

You do have my sympathy.

I think primary teaching would be a great job, if not for all the things other than teaching that teachers have to do. I have thought that I would like to become one, but then I am reminded by the amount of pressure that they are under. (I have a family member in teaching so have heard a lot about this.)

It seems like all public sector workers are having their morale swept away at the moment. There does need to be change, but I don't know the solution.

Autumnsky · 18/11/2015 14:29

I saw the article, I am wondering if part of the reason for such a bad experience of that Newzealand teacher is her school was a failing school, so more inspection than normal?

Teaching is a big pressure job, my mum was a teacher, not in this country, I remember she forever marked homework and exam papers during evening. But then , we had wonderful holidays, as she was at home with us during holidays.

mrz · 18/11/2015 18:38

North East and Ive been talking to some today
