How often do your DC's go on school trips?

Just wondering really. DS, year 2 has been on one, for a morning, within walking distance and he's been at the school since nursery.

Is this typical or do others do more? Thanks in advance for sharing.

Probably two or three a year - last year DD3 (now in year 6) went on a theatre trip to London, caught the public bus into our nearest town to go to the local museum and went on a walk around the village/woodlands as part of a geography topic. They also visit the local church for harvest, Christmas, Easter and leavers' day. All of these (apart from the theatre trip) were very low cost or no cost.

Snossidge · 21/09/2015 00:15

A couple each year.

MidniteScribbler · 21/09/2015 08:00

We go for two per year, one in the first semester, one in the second, except for preps who don't go on one until second semester. Year 3, 5 and 6 also have a camp. We also get blanket permission from parents at the start of the year to be able to go in to the nature reserve next to the school at anytime during the year, and will often go once or twice per term for a lesson in there (just have to let the office know we are going so they know where the students are in case of fire/emergency.

Sallyhasleftthebuilding · 21/09/2015 08:05

Depends on the class (apparently) if theres a high concentration of difficult behaviour they dont go, so little darlings arent left out. (DS missed out for this reason- not bitter)

Artandco · 21/09/2015 08:09

Usually one every half term, so 6 a year. Sometimes extra. They can be bigger like a trip to a castle, or smaller like a walk to local x y z. We live in London though so most things like museums are very close by so easy and quick to get to

FiveGoMadInDorset · 21/09/2015 08:09

Both DC's go out for forest school about once a fortnight, DD has just come back from a two night camping trip, DS is going to a museum in our county town after half term. They will also get trips in the summer term. DS is Yr3 DD Yr5, its a small rural school with its own minibuses as its split over two sites in two villages which helps keep the costs down.

Sirzy · 21/09/2015 08:13

One a year for all classes then perhaps one other if if is something linked to their curriculum at that point.

TeenAndTween · 21/09/2015 08:15

One by coach per year generally.
Then other walking ones into town as appropriate.

Coaches are massively expensive these days. And trips with little ones need a lot of man power because of ratios.

QueenVictoria11 · 21/09/2015 08:19

Quite a bit of variation then. Guess it depends on location but a shame it also seems to depend on budget (for things like forest school) and behaviour.

Oh we have forest school also which is for one half term a year ( so 6 weeks). They just use local London large parks

The school has own coaches and minibuses as they use most days of the week.

Kampeki · 21/09/2015 08:44

Around 2-3 per year as part of the curriculum, and one or two "extra" trips to theatre etc for those who are interested.

Kampeki · 21/09/2015 08:45

They used to do more, but now have a lot of specialist people coming into the school instead.

Witchend · 21/09/2015 10:17

Usually 1 big one a year, and 2-3 others. However they have a lot of people coming in to do things at the school too.

uhoh1973 · 21/09/2015 10:22

Reception - Forest School every week plus Christmas pantomime (not sure about the education content of this one...), 2km run, sponsored walk, trip to local (1 hr bus) animal sanctuary and 4mile walk. So it sounds like we are quite lucky! :-)

JimmyGreavesMoustache · 21/09/2015 10:29

2-3 per year generally
one or two of a more educational bent (local orchestra, museum), and a more fun one in the last weeks of the summer turn (zoo etc)

Lindy2 · 21/09/2015 10:40

Usually 2. They do 1 big trip, full day out, travel on a coach etc and 1 small trip which is usually a half day and somewhere free/cheap and local.

LooseSeal · 21/09/2015 10:48

Generally one each term, so that's three a year although last year they had someone bring in reptiles for the children to poke look at instead of going out on a trip for one of them. They also do forest school but as the school backs onto woodland they just go out the back gate, which doesn't count as a trip really.

Bunnyjo · 21/09/2015 11:11

My DC go to a tiny village school with around 85 children on roll.

DS was in school nursery last year and went on the following trips:
Edinburgh Zoo
Local Wildlife Park
Holyrood Palace
Local Farm
Seaside

DD was year 3 and went on the following trips:
Edinburgh Zoo
Local Wildlife Park
Holyrood Palace
Newcastle Centre for Life
5 Day Residential

DS also went on a trip on his first week in reception. The school also does forest schools and organised things such as an inflatable assault course to visit for the day and a travelling pantomime company to visit for Xmas. The kids in my DC's school are really lucky, in my opinion!

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 21/09/2015 11:13

A couple of coach trips plus variable walking things and visitors coming in.

TurnOffTheTv · 21/09/2015 11:24

Bloody loads, I'm always shelling out for stuff. One abroad, one retreat, then about another 4/5 all day things.

lostintoys · 21/09/2015 12:15

Just started year 5 here. Probably two or three most terms.

QueenVictoria11 · 21/09/2015 12:23

Thanks for responses everyone.

bunnyjo your dc's school sounds amazing for learning beyond the classroom.

And I guess it could get expensive TurnOffTheTV even more so if you have more than 1 dc.

TurnOffTheTv · 21/09/2015 12:51

It does, I've got three, so it does get pricey. Secondary school trips (big ones) can be about 1k.

reni2 · 21/09/2015 13:31

Day trips monthly, overnight not until year 6 I think.

Sallyhasleftthebuilding · 21/09/2015 14:31

Just read in the paper about the cost of school trips (two weeks in africa £2k) and parents fed up of feeling that DC will miss out due to cost, and little educational value.
In nursery we were asked for £10 for 8 trips over a two week period. I think that was great value, i couldnt take them out for less, but still parents complained. Cant win.
