Year 1 Homework - what do yours get?

Apologies, this question has probably been asked a thousand times already but I'm a new mumsnetter.

My daughter is in year 1 and she has a reading book which can be changed once read twice and we have a keywords book to practice.

As of this week they will be bringing home a numeracy game (snakes n ladders/dice games etc).

She doesn't get any spelling though?

I was expecting more to be honest, especially spelling. What do your little ones get?

Something similar - reading books (usually 2 a week), Maths game about once every 3 weeks, 8 spellings a week and also 2 library story books a week.

beckybrastraps · 14/11/2006 20:53

10 spellings (tested at the end of the week)
Use them to write two sentences
Numeracy worksheet (often a game)

beckybrastraps · 14/11/2006 20:54

Oh yes, and reading book changed weekly.

It's differentiated though.
Some get fewer spellings.
Some don't write sentences.

Kaz33 · 14/11/2006 20:54

Reading books - 2 or 3 a week.
Just started spelling of three words every week.

DS2 gets nothing except a reading book. He is reading chapter books so they are only changed as and when.

They apparently start getting spellings in Term 3, though the year head said they might start earlier this year as it is a particularly bright cohort.

Gobbledigook · 14/11/2006 23:29

10 spellings a week - get them on Monday and tested following Monday.

Reading book - probably changed 3 times a week.

That's it and it's more than enough.

Gobbledigook · 14/11/2006 23:29

Btw, all those who are following the same spellings as us - did you get Chaffinch this week?! What a bizarre word to have in their spellings!!

LadyMuck · 14/11/2006 23:56

Reading each night - probably about 15-20 minutes worth (again chapter books).

Spellings - 10 per week - set on Tues, tested following Monday, but encouraged to write them out on up to 5 occasions.

Timestables - set on Tues, tested following Monday. However we seem to have the same table for 2 weeks. The first week they are tested on it in order (eg 1 x 2 = ?, 2 x 2 = ? etc), whereas in the 2nd week these are jumbled up.

School finishes at 3pm, so plenty of time to fit it in.

A reading book that can be changed daily (DS still on ORT level 1)

A word sheet

They will start to get spellings after Xmas but only those who "know" a certain amount of words.

More then enough IMO at their age.

Furball · 15/11/2006 07:25

we get a 25 page reading book everynight and 4 spellings aweek which I believe are from the reception list.

Last year in reception, every week he had to learn 3 words and write a sentence using those words!

marialuisa · 15/11/2006 07:50

Reading every night, books changed when they are finished (they read aloud in School everyday).

Spellings-once a week (number depends on child but is never more than 10)

framan · 15/11/2006 18:11

Reading every night and book is changed if they finish the book which in my DD1's case usually a new one everyday.

Spelling for test on Fridays. Started off at 10 words, now building up to 12.

One worksheet at the weekend. Could be numeracy or writing.

Pinotmum · 15/11/2006 18:17

Dd gets her book changed once a week. They will get spellings after Easter. That's all! Her teacher said they have enough years to do homework when asked

LIZS · 15/11/2006 18:23

Reading book per night, 10 spellings to learn over a week, keywords to learn to spell

Twiglett · 15/11/2006 18:24

reading book .. changed up to 3 times a week

homework at weekend .. this weekend they had to do a poem .. 8 lines

previously we've had a count in 10's thing

no spellings though because they do phonics

LadyMuck · 15/11/2006 18:25

We do phonics but still get spellings. Don't schools have to do phonics now?

Twiglett · 15/11/2006 18:26

don't know why they don't do spellings .. will ask at parents evening

LadyMuck · 15/11/2006 18:28

Now don't go asking for them - you won't be popular!

southeastastra · 15/11/2006 18:31

argh my son had spellings, tip, tap, sit, sat, pit and pat. it took him ages to learn and i don't think he really knows them. annoyingly loads of the homework hasn't even been marked.

Pinotmum · 15/11/2006 18:33

Yes, when I asked about spellings at Open Evening I was made to feel like a pushy hot-houser type

WigWamBam · 15/11/2006 18:45

Dd has had a few little homework projects to do - she's had to make a "passport" full of information about herself, draw a map of her route to school, address an envelope to herself and learn her own address and phone number, learn to sign firstly her name and then the whole alphabet in BSL finger spelling, fill an egg box with things which have different textures, things like that. She's had one of those every couple of weeks. She also brings home a "maths game" once a week, but that's optional.

Her regular homework is basically reading and spelling - she she has three reading books and one library book a week and 25 spellings each half-term. We have booklets sent home every half-term telling us what the maths targets are, and although they aren't given maths homework we are expected to do bits of maths with them.

She also has a French worksheet every week, but French is optional, and the worksheet isn't taken in for marking.

geogteach · 15/11/2006 18:48

Reading everynight, numeracy Mon, literacy Wed, history, geography,RE or Science Fri. We get them all on Monday, usually one involves writing, one learning or practising something (e.g. last week was practising songs for xmas play) and one bringing something from home.

PrincessPeaHead · 15/11/2006 19:02

like gobbledigook, reading book 3x, 10 spellings tested on fridays (which we never get around to doing but he seems to manage OK )

anniebear · 15/11/2006 20:19

On a Monday she gets 5 spellings to learn and Numeracy homework

Tuesday Reading book and work sheet

Thursday Reading book and work sheet

It sometimes takes ages and I think it is far too much
