So, how many school sweatshirts does your 4/5 year old have?

When dd started school in August, it was summer, but I was too tight to buy her a summer dress, so she wore a school pinafore, polo shirt, and her sweatshirt went to school in her bag, but haedly ever got worn.

Now it is WINTER, and she has a sweatshirt on every day, over the top of her dress. Dress remains clean most of the week, sweatshirt is smeared with food every day! She's only got two- do i really need to buy a sweatshirt for every day of the week to avoid washing three times a week?

How many do yours get through?

DD has 1 cardigan. Even now it is winter though it always gets taken off as soon as she gets into school, and remains in her back until she gets home in the evening.

DD has to wear a lunch pinny at school - great idea! Clothes are staying cleaner for far longer.

but hula, your dd goes to a posh private school doesn't she? (Remember seeing the photos of her in that hat!). I think lunch pinny is a great idea, but not likely to catch on at dd's school!

True, just think it is a good idea and very practical!

But even still, DD still never wears her cardigan! Have two pinafore dresses which she wears for 3-4 days at a go.

Would love to know how she gets her tie dirty though - HOW?! It is under a pinafore and a lunch pinny; it shouldn't ebe possible!

My DD has five of everything. I'm like yorkiegirl, don't always need a clean one every day but knowing I can get through a week without panicking keeps the stress levels down.

tissy · 13/11/2006 20:24

OK, thanks YG, so maybe I got it the wrong way round buying 3 dresses and 2 sweatshirts!

more than 5! disorganised laundry here!

iota · 13/11/2006 20:26

ds1 only had 2. ds2 has loads as he can wear all of ds1's cast- offs

northerner · 13/11/2006 20:26

My ds has 3 sweatshirts, at first I was fastidious about him wearing a clean one every day. Now if it passes the damp cloth test it gets worn again

mysonsmummy · 13/11/2006 20:26

ds has 5 sweatshirts. got mine 2nd hand in school schop and all are in perfect condition.

KBear · 13/11/2006 20:30

My DS has two but will be ordering two more - they are grey marl - RIDICULOUS - cuffs dirty every day and usually paint or yog or something down it too. Also bobbly already. Not impressed with the quality of the school supplier. Might put a note in the suggestion box for navy sweatshirts to be considered!

charliecat · 13/11/2006 20:31

anyone need a navy one? ideal opportunity for me to sell mine

Furball · 13/11/2006 20:32

ds in year 1 only has 2 and I make him take it off as soon as he gets home!

Best thing is to ask about second hand stuff I paid 20p each for ds's polo shirts, bargain!

Tinkerbel5 · 13/11/2006 20:32

DD has 2, 1 sweatshirt and 1 cardigan, if there is a little mark on one I recycle it for the next day with a damp cloth or a baby wipe

CrocodileKate · 13/11/2006 20:34

My ds has two. If they get really mucky I chuck them in a quick wash and throw them over the bannister over night and they are dry and ready for him to throw on in the morning.

mummydear · 13/11/2006 21:03

Both DS have two, as someone previously mentioned if they pass the damp cloth test they'll do for the next day.

Other than that they dry pretty quickly overnight if they have to go in wash.

Gingerbear · 13/11/2006 21:05

we have one sweatshirt which DD has never worn, and 3 cardigans, which she prefers.
One on, one in the wash, one clean is the motto.

Pinkchampagne · 13/11/2006 21:20

DS started his school life with 2 sweatshirts, but being a child who normally comes home from school covered in yoghurt, he now has 4 sweatshirts!

LunarSea · 13/11/2006 21:26

Like Yorkiegirl we have 5, so we can if necessary do a whole week without having to wash them. In practice we do wash more often than that and/or the occsional one survives more than one day, but when you're working full time too it's nice not to be compelled to deal with midweek washing as well.

Gillian76 · 13/11/2006 21:27

Mine only wear sweatshirts on gym days. These get worn with skirts and poloshirts. More often than not the sweatshirt comes home in the bag. They have 1 each but they get worn about 3 times before I wash them.

They have 2 cardigans each which they wear on non-gym days with their pinafores, shirts and ties.

expatinscotland · 13/11/2006 21:28

DD1 is in nursery and has 5 of these. 4 of them are red. The other is heather grey.

She has 4 pairs of sweat bottoms to go w/them - black, navy and heather grey.

ComeOVeneer · 13/11/2006 21:30

DD has 2 skirts, 1 pinafore, 2 tops and 3 cardigans, I have no idea how she does it but every item of clothing gets grubby enough to have to head to the laundry basket at the end of each day.

EmmyLou · 13/11/2006 21:32

DD2 has 2 cardigans (if she has to wear a dirty one then so be it - but its usually her white shirts that suffer from bolognaise spills).

DD1 has 2 jumpers. She's at secondary school and shhh!...don't tell her, but although she puts her wool, pleated kilt in the wash every week, I only wash it about every month as it never looks dirty - its also a b*gger to iron because of all the pleats.

I do have 3 children though and so washing mid week is no hassle as the machine is on just about every day.

cece · 13/11/2006 21:40

2 cardigans, but dark green so dirt doesn't show too much! Only yoghurt LOL

LIZS · 13/11/2006 21:50

1 sweat shirt(for swimming day and pe ) , 1 cardigan and 1 spare . Usually get through 2 pinafores a week and change poloneck top each day.
