Reception are having a fairy tale banquet - what food to send in

As per thread title really - my 4 yo DD's class are doing fairytales in school and they will end the term with a fancy dress ball and banquet. We are asked for food contributions - any ideas for something fun that could grace a children's banquet table?

How about a plate of shiny red apples.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairy_bread
I had a friend at primary school who had moved from Australia. This was always served at their parties. Not very healthy but still...

readyforno2 · 06/03/2015 21:23

Think I may have made the same mistake dancing Blush

ShatnersBassoon · 06/03/2015 21:24

A gingerbread house, decorated with loads of sweets.

Gunpowder · 06/03/2015 21:25

Gingerbread house if you are ambitious.

Gunpowder · 06/03/2015 21:26

X post!

ShatnersBassoon · 06/03/2015 21:28

I'm suggesting a fantastic gingerbread creation, but I'd probably send in Wotsits and a bottle of squash.

Gunpowder · 06/03/2015 21:29

You could also show off with those choux pastry swans they did in the 80's. (Ugly duckling)

I'm lazy and like the apple idea though!

MsVanRein · 06/03/2015 21:33

White sugar mice, not healthy but a nod to Cinderella.

You could make sandwiches and cut them into animal and bird shapes which would be like Snow Whites friends.

Yika · 06/03/2015 21:35

Brilliant ideas, yes I was thinking about some swan-themed thing - I like the wands though!

Look at what rice paper fairy cake toppers are available.

zipzap · 06/03/2015 21:35

marshmallow snowmen are easy and popular - push 3 marshmallows onto the end of a cookie pop stick, push twiglets or straight pretzel sticks (I've only found them in M&S so far) into the middle marshmallow as arms, use an icing pen to mark on eyes, a nose and buttons.

I've bought the cake pop sticks from poundland (50 for a pound) or if you have more time, you can get better deals on ebay (but don't get the ones that are really short as you need to make sure they are long enough for 3 marshmallows and space for little hands to hold them). Poundland were also selling a pack of 3 or 4 tubes of icing to use for fine decoration which worked well for the eyes etc - I just used black for the eyes, red for the nose and there was a purple one in there too so used that for the buttons, but you could put a scarf on too if you fancied. I went for the simple option!

I've also subsequently seen them done with rolos or liquorice allsorts as hats on top of the top marshmallow.

Alternatively - a few packets of popping candy/space dust, and call it fizzy fairy dust? Bet the teachers would love you for that but it would serve them right for wanting to do a fairy tale ball with food.

Pigs in blankets for the Three Little Pigs!

Fizzyplonk · 06/03/2015 21:37

Could do 3 little pigs and have
Chipsticks as hay
Chipolatas/carrot sticks as sticks
Cheese cubes/pink wafer biscuits as bricks

Gingerbread men

Porridge oats flapjacks

MrsTawdry · 06/03/2015 21:38

I made little houses out of shortbread biscuits and royal icing. Mini ones...they're easy to stick together into house shapes with a roof and everything.....leave the back open and shove some sweets in.

Annunziata · 06/03/2015 21:38

Fairy dust sherbet?

Dreadful for their teeth, but at least it would bring the tooth fairy Grin

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 06/03/2015 21:39

Fairy cakes with popping candy on the top

Or

Hard, tough "dwarven bread"

Or

Bag of KitKats

(Depending on mood / time to dedicate)

QuiteQuietly · 06/03/2015 21:40

ready That fairy bread looks revolting!

How about mushroom sweets (easy toadstools), or emergency cupboard treats in a basket (Red Riding Hood) or gingerbread men (run, run as fast as you can etc.). Love the star biscuits wands and may do them here as long as I can do walk of shame to the till with cake pop sticks.

I saw some great apples a few years ago with a hole bored into them and a worm sweet inserted so it poked out.

What a fun thing to do in reception.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 06/03/2015 21:40

Fizzy - or just use chipolatas as the three little pigs...

MsVanRein · 06/03/2015 21:45

Alice in wonderland themed biscuits with "eat me" piped on them.

Not sure it's technically a fairytale but whimsical enough to count I think!

MonoNoAware · 06/03/2015 21:53

Plastic cauldron full of crisps fruit?

Yika · 06/03/2015 21:56

I'm loving the 3 little pigs idea! That was one of their fairy tales.

And the apple with the worm sweet - fab!

Fairy bread looks impressive and easy.

'Dwarven bread' - Grin
