School stating which pens parents HAVE to buy

We recently had a short note from deputy head telling us that following an outside inspection, they were introducing a handwriting policy. This meant that every child in school would be given two gel pens.....one for all writing at school and home and the coloured pen for marking their work.

They would only be allowed be allowed to use those specific branded pens and the school would supply them for 40p per pen.

DDs pen ran out a week after she was given it and they smudge.

Today, DS got a note from the tescher in his diary.....to me.....telling me he needed to take in 80p to replace the pens (DS has told me one pen was stolen and one was placed by another child under the table and squashed).

My problem with it all is that (in the words of www.gov.uk) state schools cannot charge parents for materials or supplies.

Surely if they have a problem with handwriting, they should.....errrr......teach handwriting. The NC states that years 5 and 6 should still have handwriting lessons.....DS says they never do. How, by giving them specific pens, will this help handwriting? I'm thinking that either they're trying to make money out of selling them or b) just trying to impress Oftsed.....they are being monitored following issues over the last couple of years.

I feel as though I'm being a bit OTT about it all but it's just another thing where actually teaching the kids seems to be override by another crap idea!
I was going to email his teacher that wrote in the diary....something like:
If the school is going to enforce those pens, then they need to resource them bla bla bla. Should I go ahead and send it? With two kids there, it's going to add up buying 4 gel pens for them every other week!!

Of course not.....they would have said handwriting needs improving then some dippy person at school would have suggested a handwriting pen policy!!

So blaming Ofsted is a red herring ... it's down to the school

Verbena37 · 16/02/2015 14:22

Don't think I had blamed ofsted had I?

No but hijk does seem to be suggesting it's all down to Ofsted

hijk · 16/02/2015 15:05

mrz, 90% of all lunacy in schools is down to ofsted, or related, eg HMI, ofsted adivisors, ofsted preparers, etc.

In our school it comes down to ofsted saying change your policy to something the HMI approve of, and HMI saying here are the policies which ofsted will approve of, pick one, and we ended up with the 4 ink one, with HMI returning a month later to check it is in full swing, and no exceptions.

Of course, you can ignore HMI, but them of course the head and the senior managers will all lose their jobs, so not exactly a choice, is it.

This garbage is fairly standard. Ofsted and the department of Ed are both completely irretrievably round the twist, but ofsted does just pip the D of E at the post for sheer mindlessness.

On the other side of he coin, my friends children go to an absolutely lovely private boarding school and a few weeks back, she got an email from the housemaster saying he had sent her little DS back to bed for the day.....with TV and chocolate stash.....for no other reason than him being a bit tired and run down. How is that for excellent pastoral care?

Wish state schools could show more understanding and compassion.....as a parent would.

Gel pens are are a problem for left handlers, DS1 hates them as he ends up smudging his writing.

I hate it when schools get all proscriptive, brings out the rebel in me, hench my shunning of the school logo polo shirts and sweatshirts of dubious quality.

mrz · 16/02/2015 15:11

No 100% of lunacy in schools us down to leadership using Ofsted to push through silly policies

Verbena37 · 16/02/2015 15:13

Oops.....I posted that last comment in the wrong thread!! Please ignore!!

mrz maybe sometimes, but the other way around too.

When I was at school we were required to use fountain pens. In my case that led to blue hands and blotchy paper, not the beautiful writing that was no doubt intended. I loved ball point pens!

VioletMoon4683 · 17/02/2015 09:24

Email them

'Dear x, thankyou for raising the issue of pens. My understanding is that schools aren't permitted to charge for equipment/pens (see attachment). I must also point out that the gel pen initially provided only lasted two weeks. As a result we have decided to opt for frixtion pens instead which are much longer lasting and offer an erasable action'

Verbena37 · 17/02/2015 11:26

Love it, thanks violet

Oh well....things took another turn in the pen saga yesterday....
I decided, after hearing DS mate had been given a diary warning for not using the correct pen, to email the school with the attachment showing DFES info about not charging.

His teacher write back saying that as DS was on Forces Special Premium thing, that he needn't pay !!!

Like that solved the problem.?????
Errrr...no. Because surely he would still get told off or given detention if he didn't use the correct pen!
Give me strength!!

Amazing how people who hold down professional jobs seem to be able to completely miss the point. I would take this to the HT and also the governors.

Verbena37 · 25/02/2015 21:57

Will do anything to avoid the HT.....scary and very unapproachable.

Yokohamajojo · 26/02/2015 14:13

Oh wow, so your DC doesn't need to pay and that is now settled... Wink I think it's a totally ridiculous policy and as a left hander my self finding pens that didn't smudge the whole sheet I was writing on was always an issue throughout school for me! Gel pens are definitely a no no

Shame you have a unapproachable HT, what about other parents, have you talked to anyone else who also thinks it's a bit silly? strengths in number and all that. Good luck!!

Verbena37 · 26/02/2015 14:36

To be honest, I feel a bit petty making an issue about it but I will be really cross should DS get reprimanded for not having the correct pen.
I believe, if parents of left handlers send in a note, they can continue using their special pens.
