Girls must have their hair tied up

Our daughter's school has now said all girls must wear their hair tied up. I think this is ridiculous and just wondered if this was a rule in other primary schools?

Our DD hates her hair being tied up and her hair is only just about shoulder length. Getting more and more fed up of parental and child choice being taken away over trivial matters.

nappyaddict - at DD's schools it has always been all hair up

Purpleroxy · 22/10/2014 20:23

At ours it's all the hair up if touching shoulders.

in my school the new rule is GIRLS must have their hair tied up and as i identify as unspecified gender they still wont let me also i hate having my hair down as i feel self concious to have it up

It’s the rule at the school I work in. Hair that is long enough to be tied back must be... boy or girl.....

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 10/09/2019 16:49

And the poster who says she SEES NITS in students hair: surely you only see that once as you report it and they have to stay home until it is solved?!*

We can’t exclude children for having nits! All we can do is tell the parents and offer advice on how to treat them. In fact a child off for longer than one session “I found nits this morning so I’m treating little Boris and will bring him this afternoon” is actually unauthorised absence.

Same rule at our school: hair that is long enough to be tied up needs to be tied up, regardless of gender. its for safety mainly, as chunks of hair getting caught and ripped out really hurt (as i found out as a 7 year old)

It's normal in the country where I live, and I'm sure it's a factor in helping to prevent headlice. I am amazed when I see pictures of kids with hair spilling all over the place in the UK--no wonder lice are such a problem.

I don't think it's a good idea to start hinting to your daughter that a HA is something to be embarrassed about. Why not offer her a choice--she can have plaits or she can have a chin-length bob. Show her in front of the mirror what both options look like, while she wears her HA. Her reaction will let you know whether she is bothered by the HA being visible or not.

drspouse · 12/09/2019 10:25

Perhaps you could tell her not to.

Ha ha ha ha ha.
Ha.
My DD has a bob but sometimes when the front gets long we use clips. These also last about 5 minutes though.
The tiny little elastics (black or see through) under another elastic work better, though, it's harder for her to get them out.

Oh fucking hell. What a generation we have now.

drspouse · 14/09/2019 08:21

Don't worry, unspecifiedgender you have a sex so go with that.

user1493494961 · 14/09/2019 23:36

Yes, it's a rule for all at our school.

Rachelover60 · 15/09/2019 00:22

It's quite usual for schools to ask girls to have their hair tied back.

OnceFreshFish · 15/09/2019 13:28

It would be stupid as hell to have the rule 'all girls' rather than 'all students with hair longer than..' but I would assume it was poor communication issue.

Mumsy2009 · 13/10/2019 02:01

My daughter is in primary school and I just got a letter this week informing me of this rule. She’s not happy as her hair is only just sits in her shoulders. Shall be taking her to the hairdressers on Monday, for some kind of short cut.

Mumof21989 · 18/10/2019 16:11

Yes at our DD it's tied up. I've seen the odd kid with it down though. Suppose they are thinking of it being in their faces, getting caught, getting dinner in it, aswel as nits xx

msjrmesq · 19/10/2019 09:26

'Pupils with long hair must have it tied back at all times' is the rule at the high school my children do to, I don't have a problem with that.

Artykitty666 · 21/10/2019 18:02

My school doesn't have this but many parents have chosen to as we've had quite a lot of nits recently. Unfortunately they're five years old and constantly pull out the hair bobbles and then ask me to help put them in again. So they might not catch nits, but I'm pretty certain I'm going to soon! 😁
