Daft question: what part of f the clothes do I sew name tapes too?

I am about to start sewing name tapes onto DD's uniform but what part of the clothes do I sew it to? Polo shirts - simple, back of the neck; pinafore also obvious. But what about skirts, trousers, PE shorts & tights? If I put it on the the inside at the waist, isn't it going to rub against her and itch? DD can sense potential for something rubbing at a 1000 paces! What about socks?
Before someone suggests iron on tapes, I find sewing quite relaxing and will just do it in front of the TV over a couple of evenings. I guess iron on ones would still have the same potential for itchiness anyway.
Feel free to tell me I'm over thinking this!

Will her vest prevent rubbing? I am a sewer, love it too, but I write on the top/inside of socks with a fabric pen.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 23/06/2014 20:30

On the bottom hem inside? So you can lift one edhe and see it? Sew alongside an existing hem.

toomuchicecream · 23/06/2014 20:56

Won't her polo shirt be tucked in?

CharlesRyder · 23/06/2014 21:02

As a primary school teacher I can tell you that I want to find the name tape at the back of the waistband as that is where I am going to look first. I don't really want to hunt round the garment for it.

If your DD is going to dislike the feel of the sewn in tape I would get good iron or stick in ones and take up embroidery!!

Coveredinweetabix · 23/06/2014 21:04

The chances of DD wearing a vest unless it is snowing are nil. She is always hot and, at home, rarely wears anything on her top half. At pre-school, she always seems to have a layer less than everyone else.
As for tucking in, whilst I like the theory, do reception children stay tucked in? They have a pretty good adventure playground and I imagine that after jumping, running and hanging upside down at playtime, things will become untucked.
Sorry, I feel as though I am making excuses but I have visions of DD wiggling around like she has fleas during circle time due to a name tape caused itch.

Just get smooth ones then!!!

You can take your sewing basket out on something else!! Embroider her name into her PE bag!

turdfairynomore · 23/06/2014 21:11

I'm a teacher too and the more obvious the place, the better! I named socks by folding the name tag in half and sewing it like a loop into top of sock.

supadupapupascupa · 23/06/2014 21:15

BAck of the neck, and back of waistband (or to the side if like my DS who has a gathered band due to being a skinny minny) never had an issue with rubbing and I sew in name tapes. I fold under the ends which gives smoothness and sew all the way around.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 23/06/2014 21:57

Life is too short to name socks! I'd rather risk losing them. TBH, my DSs only lost two socks in their whole primary school career.

SanityClause · 23/06/2014 22:01

I use iron on labels for socks, although I do label sports socks like hockey socks. I stitch the label on the outside of the sock, along the seam that runs over the top of the toe, because that's what my mother used to do.

toomuchicecream · 23/06/2014 22:04

Teach her that if it's itching, she needs to tuck her shirt back in.

SanityClause · 23/06/2014 22:05

Can I just say, you are being ridiculously PFB, about this, honestly. She will cope, I promise.

Lesshastemorespeed · 23/06/2014 22:06

Ditch the labels and write her name on with a permanent marker. No rubbing then.

ruddynorah · 23/06/2014 22:08

Write her name on the care label. Really don't bother with underwear items.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 23/06/2014 22:11

And then write her name in a permanent marker up the inside of all sleeves, hems, trouser legs, etc. So when it goes missing, and it will, and someone else has claimed it, you can recognise it.

Lesshastemorespeed · 23/06/2014 22:16

If you have a younger child who might wear these as handmedowns, just write a first initial and your surname. So:

Dc1: A. Lesshaste
Dc2: A. Lesshaste, B

stealthsquiggle · 23/06/2014 22:20

Fold the ends in, sew all the way round, they won't itch

{disclaimer - try this out on a couple of items of home clothing first, not telling DD that you have done it, just to check that she doesn't notice before you sew on 144}

Really don't bother with pants, and socks only if they change them regularly at school.

stealthsquiggle · 23/06/2014 22:20

(and if they do change socks, then I do it the same way turdfairy does)

jaabaar · 23/06/2014 22:23

I can understand OP about itching. My DD always complaints about labels and I have to cut them off!

Coveredinweetabix · 23/06/2014 22:25

Thank you. And yes, I realise I am being very PFB.

The iron on ones we use leave no trace of an itch. They also won't ever come out again so don't use the them if you plan to sell your clothes on!

mynametags.com

I get half stickers and half iron on. The stickers last for a long time. I actually got my phone number on the reception lot, partly because I hoped someone might call (not likelyConfused) but also because DD always had my number about her person somewhere should she have got lostShock

blueberryboybait · 23/06/2014 22:35

We sew labels into the hem of polo shirts and skirts as DD can 'feel' them no matter how carefully I sew them in. I use iron on ones on the sole of the foot in socks, once they have been washed a couple of times Miss Fussy doesn't even complain. We found iron on ones from easytoname was brilliant and we still have them firmly attached to uniform I bought 2 years ago!

I have 2 labels in logo cardigans and fleeces - one sewn somewhere obvious and one ironed into the sleeve, as we had a spate of uniform going missing in class and no one had found out who it was until one day a small girl removed her cardigan and in the sleeve was DD's label the parents had cut out my sewn in one and also all the other shop labels, they did it any time their DD brought home the wrong cardigan. Stern words were had by the head.

RustyBear · 23/06/2014 22:46

If you do write the name in marker, even 'permanent' marker, do be aware it does wash out and needs renewing from time to time. And please make sure it's legible, particularly if the marker has a thick nib.

I speak as one who spent a depressingly long time this afternoon delving into the overflowing lost property bin trying to decipher BBOOR (which turned out to be Brook), C-ot (one of several Charlottes) and Lr y (which as far as I can see doesn't correspond to any child at our school and was probably handed down from a friend and never changed ) so that I could reunite the jumpers that had been left strewn about the playground & field over the last week or so with their probably oblivious owners.....

Lesshastemorespeed · 23/06/2014 22:54

Get a black Sharpy with a thin nib. I check at the beginning of each term and go over names if I need to, but it's not that often.

FatalCabbage · 23/06/2014 23:10

Sewing all the way round obviates itching potential.

Always putting them in top-middle-back is also helpful to get the child to wear things the right way round - particularly jumpers IME.
