Daft question: what part of f the clothes do I sew name tapes too?

I am about to start sewing name tapes onto DD's uniform but what part of the clothes do I sew it to? Polo shirts - simple, back of the neck; pinafore also obvious. But what about skirts, trousers, PE shorts & tights? If I put it on the the inside at the waist, isn't it going to rub against her and itch? DD can sense potential for something rubbing at a 1000 paces! What about socks?
Before someone suggests iron on tapes, I find sewing quite relaxing and will just do it in front of the TV over a couple of evenings. I guess iron on ones would still have the same potential for itchiness anyway.
Feel free to tell me I'm over thinking this!

Skirts and dresses get their label near the hem, where the care label is.

PE shorts - I use a pen, there is nothing where I can put it.

Socks. - I ignore, we haven't lost any. The first year I ironed labels underneath the foot, after that I asked myself why.

Easy2Name iron on ones are completely flat and smooth, she really shouldn't have a problem with those, they're also much quicker obvs. Unless you have a teacher like the slightly obsessed one a mate encountered who demanded to inspect new children's sweatshirts to see that the labels were firmly sewn on not ironed (or, god forbid, Sharpied). State school too.

I use mynametag iron ons (100% smooth). They never come off. I put then on waist bands and collars so it's obvious. You can get ones with pictures to make it easier too. My 3 and 4 year olds never lost an item and they work great on anything including socks Grin

I get exactly what you are talking about. I am extremely sensitive to labels, I have to unpick all the labels out of my clothes or they itch like hell. I tried cutting labels off but the little bits of tag left behind still itch. Occasionally I get something with a woven label that is soft enough to tolerate. (DD appears to have inherited this too)

I use pen to mark clothes rather than tags. I'm sure you can get woven labels that are softer than the iron on ones. I did also see a thing a while back that was a custom name stamp with a special ink pad. The reviews looked pretty good but I never bought it and can't remember the name (I'm sure it would come up on a google search.)

As for where to label I would write the name in big letters just under the waist band. Or if you really want to sew could you stitch the label vertically right beside the existing bum seam rather than horizontally across the waist band? Still easily visible and at the bit most people would check for a label but less irritating on the skin.

DD is a nightmare with labels - they all have to be cut out of clothes instantly... I have pairs of embroidery scissors everywhere! Probably sounds mad to people who don't have a label/texture problem themselves or with their own child, but it's much easier to fix than fight.

I'm a fan of sewn-in name tapes (also DD can't yet remove them, if an iron-in label started to scratch she would be liable to just yank the thing off), but some of the eBay sellers ones seem to be softer than Cash's. Plus they have a bigger choice of fonts and colours (yes I did give in to having pink lettering) - and you can even have little trains/dinosaurs/flowers etc if you wish, and all at a fraction of the price!

Fold the ends under and sew all the way round making sure to tuck the spiky edges and the knots well under. DD hates skirts and will only wear pinafores/dresses so I haven't had that issue but would probably do the waistband.

For PE shorts, I sew them on the outside on the bottom of one leg about an inch in. The same kind of place that we had to have our initials embroidered on our games skirts at school.

Tights I fold the tape over and just sew along the ends - positioned on the outside of the tights at the top so it can't possibly rub.

I've never bothered with socks and knickers (my poor mother with 3 of us at boarding school must have spent half her life sewing on name tapes).

I sew a name-tape on her book bag on the top of the bit that opens to show the name-card. That way nothing has to be opened to see that it's hers and I can spot it at 10 paces. Ditto for the school rucksack.

I'm glad it isn't just my DD who is a nightmare with labels! Yes to unpicking as cutting off a label just makes it even scratchier. Thank you for these additional tips. I must actually get sewing!

I never bothered with socks & tights at primary school (apart from expensive rugby socks )

I do now label dds tights & ballet tights & socks but that is because she has occasional sleepovers in the boarding house.
