I buggered up admissions application

Dd should start summer 2015, I thought I had sent the form but I haven't :(

There are tons of spaces in local schools (rural Wales) but will they accept an application this late?

She is already attending pre school at the primary school but I don't ideally want her to miss a term is she doesn't have to.

Has pregnancy brain messed this up totally?

I don't understand when your DC is meant to start?

Children normally start school the September after their 4th birthday. If that is September 2015, then you won't apply until Dec 2014/Jan 2015.

I would be surprised if the pre-school hadn't mentioned the application to you if it was your year, too. I don't really know why I'd expect them to prompt you, but our nursery has notices up to remind the right set of parents (they're just being helpful, I guess).

I hope you haven't missed it, but wish you luck of you have and need to do a late application.

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 25/04/2014 19:40

Boobs, don't worry (also rural wales), if schools were full it would be a problem, but as long as there are spaces you will still get in. Do it now!

admission · 25/04/2014 21:24

Assuming you are talking about admission in September 2014 just apply now, it will not be an issue if there are places, the LA has to give you the place. If the school is full to the admission number well you might have to appeal but actually in many rural areas of Wales they do tend to take all the applicants if they possibly can.
If you are talking about September 2015 then you do not need to apply till Autumn 2014.

Thank goodness! Just saw a friends post saying her DD had an acceptance letter for summer 2015 and panicked a bit. I will give them a ring on Monday

She is 4 in June 2015. All my friends with lo's the same age have confirmed that they have acceptance letters

Is it a state school? Look on the council website under school admissions but in England at least you can't apply until next year for the place if it is for September 2015.

PenguinsLoveFishFingers · 26/04/2014 08:13

I really don't understand this. I'm in England, so realise there might be slight differences, but I thought that the timings were broadly the same.

My daughter is 4 in June 2015 too. We apply for her place in Autumn 2014 and find out in April 2015 for a September 2015 start (though thankfully this one should be a formality as it's a sibling at a PAN 90 school).

Are you sure that they aren't talking about some other sort of letter, like maybe they have registered an interest at a local school and have had an acknowledgment? Or a private school? Or a nursery place if they aren't already there?

contractconfusion · 26/04/2014 08:18

They must be talking about a school nursery class, half days. You would have missed applications for that but you would need to apply again for Reception anyway.
Either that or the children that you say are the same age are actually September and October birthdays so in the school year above your DC.

MrsKCastle · 26/04/2014 15:26

Just had a look at the Cardiff admissions (I know you're not there but the dates will be the same) and it's definitely the same as England. For a child turning 4 in summer 2015, you apply autumn this year, or be January 2015.

MrsKCastle · 26/04/2014 15:36

Actually, checking further, it seems that different authorities in Wales have different deadlines for the application e.g. your deadline may be anywhere between Nov and Jan. But check with your local authority, and don't worry, you won't have missed the deadline, it will be in a fewo months' time.

KellyHopter · 26/04/2014 15:37

They must be talking about nursery places, do the schools they mention have nursery classes?

KellyHopter · 26/04/2014 15:38

Or as someone else said, their children's birthdays are September+

SueDNim · 26/04/2014 17:59

So you currently have a 2 year old?

Boobsofsteel · 26/04/2014 18:25

It seems to be that our authority do quite early applications and children start a term earlier in wales anyway.

She has a pre school place at the same school so I will give them a ring tomorrow and see how much trouble I'm in!

OP posts:
PenguinsLoveFishFingers · 26/04/2014 19:33

She starts at Easter 2015? When she's still 3? That seems really odd. Do you want to tell people what authority you're in?

PenguinsLoveFishFingers · 26/04/2014 19:34

Yes to Sue. I really don't understand how you can be applying 'late' for schools when your daughter, like my younger one, is currently still 2.

ReallyTired · 26/04/2014 19:35

If there are spaces in local schools then you will be fine. I suggest you contact your local council on Monday. If your favourite school is full then I assume wales has a waiting list system.

Please don't fret your daugher will get a school place somewhere.

jaynebxl · 26/04/2014 23:55

Do children start a term early in Wales? Never heard that before.

hippo123 · 27/04/2014 00:41

Children don't start school a term earlier in wales. Your friends will be talking about admission to methrhin which is like a nursery which is attached to a primary school that they can attend for 2 hours a day. They don't have to go, it's often impossible unless your a sahm. It will be march 2015 that you have to apply for her full time school place, which she won't start until sept 2015.

BrieAndChilli · 27/04/2014 00:50

We àre in Wales md ds2 will be going to school sep 2015. We have to have pplications in by jan 2015 and hear about spaces apil 2015. They don't start berm earlier than England they start the sep they are 4

Boobsofsteel · 27/04/2014 22:13

I'm in Powys and it's defiantly not for pre school places. Those have been sorted long since.

OP posts:
PatriciaHolm · 27/04/2014 22:31

In Powys, children can start school in the term in which they turn 4 if the school has the staffing/facilities to cope. Given OPs daughter will be 4 in June 2015, that is clearly what is happening here. It's not the same as England.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 27/04/2014 22:59

The admission rules in Powys do seem completely different to elsewhere. I'd call them ASAP tomorrow and see what they say. If you want your DD to start school for the term she turns 4 (ie Summer 2015) then it would seem as though you have missed the application deadline. Having said that it is clear that that early start is at parents' discretion so probably you could apply next year and your DD could start Sept 2015 (ie more usual reception start age elsewhere). I think you should double check this though as I the policy isn't that clear to me.

If your local school is undersubscribed you should have no difficulty getting a place though even if you do opt for the Summer 2015 start. I'd be interested to know what the LEA say when you speak to them.
