TBH what time do your dcs go to bed, actually in bed, head on the pillow and light switched off, that sort bed time?

Always an early riser, aged 4 DD needed 14 hours sleep in 24 hours. As a summer baby, it was tricky trying to wean her off her 2 hour afternoon nap before school.

For reception bed time HAD to be 7pm..preferably earlier.

Year 1, we still aimed for 7pm...7:30 was okay...we'd have to regularly dose with snacks to push things later Unless DD had a cold, we'd use her as a 6:30 am alarm clock!

Year 2...we can fiddle with bed times quite a bit. We aim for 7:30, but 8 isn't a disaster...it gets a bit messy after that.
Unless she is super excited she will be "sound asleep" after about 20 minutes (though we do make sure she has plenty of exercise every day).

DS (10) 8.45pm up, usually asleep by 9.30-10
DD (7) 7.30 up, usually asleep by 8, sometimes 8.30

DS always awake by 7, DD awake by 7.30-7.45 but nightmare to get out of bed. She loves her bed, DS hates it.

coffetofunction · 06/04/2014 21:21

So glad to see this feed & any options welcome on our situation.

DS age 9 has ADHD, he goes to bed between 7:30-8pm but doesn't sleep till 9:30-11pm. He wakes at about 6am....he wants to stay up later but playa up badly when told it's bed time...

DD age 6 bed between 7-7:30, sleep pretty quick, wakes 6am-7am

BurdenedWithGloriousPurpose · 06/04/2014 21:26

My DC are 6 and 9 and are in bed and drifting off at 9.30pm.

Sometimes the 9 year old goes earlier but my 6 year old is just naturally a late nighter. He'd go to bed much later if we'd let him.

They get up at 8am on school days so still getting a decent amount of sleep.

pointythings · 06/04/2014 21:50

I think the lesson to be learned on threads like this is that it really depends on the child - guidelines are all very well, but some children thrive on less sleep than recommended, some need more. My DDs need a lot of sleep - if left to sleep themselves out, they will normally go 9 till 8. I was much the same at their age and now at 46 I still do best on a minimum of 8 hours, though I can function on 6. Find out what your DC needs and then make sure they get it!

bluewisteria · 06/04/2014 22:11

DDs aged 4 and 2, both go down by 7pm (6 if exhausted), and they generally wake naturally between 7.30-8am. BUT... if they haven't had enough exercise in the day then it is a little difficult fucking nightmare to get them to sleep through...

redskyatnight · 06/04/2014 22:42

Agree it totally depends on the child. 9 year old DS goes to bed at 9-9.30 but is generally still up at 6. 8 year old DD needs to be in bed by 8-8.30 or we are dragging her out of be for school the next morning!

defineme · 06/04/2014 23:02

coffeetofunction my friend has had great success with her 9 yr old dd with add -she never went to bed and then the dr prescribed melatonin and she's much better at being able to go to sleep at a reasonable hour.

coffetofunction · 06/04/2014 23:37

Thanks defineme, I'll have a look at this medication & discuss with pediatrician &very clever friend in medical research see if it can help us too Thanks

TheGervasuttiPillar · 07/04/2014 00:24

13 yr old 9-30/10 -- wakes between 7:00 & 8:00
11 yr old 9 ish --> 8:00am up
5 yr old 8:30/9:00pm --> 8:00pm up

me 1:00 am --> 7:00am

noramum · 07/04/2014 06:24

DD is nearly 7 and we aim that she is asleep by 8pm. This is the same time since she is 11 months due to the time we are all at home.

ZanyMobster · 07/04/2014 08:05

My just turned 6 YO goes to bed and pretty much straight to sleep at 730 as a rule. He sometimes goes about 8/830 if he is home later from an activity or in the hols/weekend. He really needs his sleep though and will sleep for 11 hours roughly.

DS1 is just 8 and he will go to bed at 830 but is often still awake at 930/10. He just cannot get to sleep and we have tried lots of things. We have to wake him at 730 but at weekends he will wake up any time between 730 & 8am. I reckon he needs 9.5-10 hours sleep. Now and then he will fall asleep a bit earlier and catch up.

I like them to go to bed as feel it is important for me and DH to have some time together in the evenings and also they do lots of after school stuff so they do need to get as much sleep as possible.

lostintoys · 07/04/2014 08:12

DS is nearly 8 and in term time his lights go out at 7.30, up in the morning at 7-ish. In the holidays he goes to bed about half an hour later.

Lizziewarmington · 07/04/2014 08:28

Lots of my Year 6 class are tired a lot of the time and seem lethargic, I wish they got more sleep. With my own children if I need to wake them in the morning they're not getting enough sleep. If they're up and ready without reminders then they're fine. I found that going to secondary meant much earlier to bed as they were exhausted. Children in my class seem to do far too many extra-curricular activities ; sometimes 2 in one evening!! No wonder they are tired poor things, they never get any free or play time.

LadyEnglefield · 07/04/2014 10:41

DTDs (8)

On school nights...

8pm bedtime - they faff about getting into PJs/brushing teeth etc and then get into bed & read. Reading time doesn't get extended so the longer they mess about the less time they have to read and both of them love reading.

8.45 - tell them it's time to finish the chapter they're reading

9.00 lights out and sleep. Have to check on DTD1 as she will get lost in a book and forget to go to sleep.

7.45am wake them up

Holidays it can go back by up to an hour and there's no set time to get up unless we're doing something.

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 07/04/2014 12:10

I agree Lizzie.

ChocolateWombat · 07/04/2014 12:27

8 year old. Term time bed between 7 and 7.30. 12 hours sleep.

Holidays. Usually before 8, but if away on holiday, can cope with anytime as long as for just a few days.

Bumpsadaisie · 07/04/2014 12:27

DD (4 nearly 5, in YR) about 8pm/8.15pm.

DS (2.5) about 7.30/7.45, but perhaps getting earlier as he is dropping his nap.

Sheneverdid · 07/04/2014 12:29

Bedtime routine done and dusted then...

Dd 5 - between 7.30 and 8.00 dependent on how busy between tea and bedtime. Usually asleep within 10 mins but wakes during the night. Nearly always the first one up before the alarm at 7.30!

Ds 9 - 9.00. Asleep in 30 minutes, wakes during the night. Wakes no problems in the morning but more often that not already awake.

We tried earlier nights with both Dc from the word go but their body clocks just don't need that much sleep, and they just got up ridiculously early! Just like me...I have always functioned at my best with 5 hours sleep...no more, no less or I feel like I've had a skin full the night before and I'm good for nothing Grin

Sadly some professionals think that one size fits all and that Dc need X amount of sleep at X age, but I think observing Dc's behavior/sleep patterns is usually the best way to go. Although saying that I have been at my sisters house quite late at night listening to my nephews playing around in their bedroom at 11.30+ which I think is not good! Smile

TeenAndTween · 07/04/2014 13:27

DD2 9yrs up to bed 7:15, in bed 8pm, lights out 8:10-8:20. Up 7:40.

sunsout · 08/04/2014 09:09

Interesting replies thanks a lot. I always feel very guilty the fact that i just cannot manage to get my dds (7) and (10) for bed by 7.30pm after trying and trying for years. They always go to bed and light out approx. 9pm and up 7am.

So i am going to start another thread about dinner time.

When DS3 was in reception he was i bed with light out by 6.30ish. Now he's 7 and in Y2, he goes to bed at 7 and reads until 8 when we put the light out and he generally goes to sleep quite quickly. He wakes around 7.30.

Kaekae · 16/04/2014 13:57

My children are 6.5 and 4.5 and go to bed about 8/8.30pm. The older one sometimes reads for a little bit. My DH doesn't get home from work until 7.30/45pm so it messes things up for us a little really as he likes to see them. He helps to put them to bed but they are excited about seeing him so hence the later bedtime!

Journeytolight · 16/04/2014 14:11

DD1 (11) : reads in her free time, 9pm bedtime which literally means lights out.

DD2 (just turned 10) : 9pm since she turned 10, complained about 8:30pm bedtime.
Both don't read at night but whenever they feel like it, generally an hour a day.

htm123 · 16/04/2014 21:14

From toddler age till age 7 always 7:30pm. No TV in the room, and only a short story before turning off the light. Since age 8 always nagging him to have his shower after 7:00pm and we end up still 'battling' one hour later. Quick shower after 8pm, and he goes to bed around 8:20pm. Reading ten minutes, and then light off. However, he told us that sometimes he is still awake around 8:45pm trying to sleep. Definitely sleeping after that as I am checking around 9pm and he is fast asleep.
