you see I have a six year old reading stage 13 and thereabouts ort. i would much rather she had more age appropriate books because we spend hours explaining what the books actually mean.try telling your six year old you want her teacher to move her down a level (or three). It's not a happy conversation.the child can decode anything but I'm not convinced she's getting a lot out of these books even though she can "read" them. the kids are just as hooked on the stupid levels as the parents!Angry

It,s not even that impottant is it? I have 2 neices one flew through levels top reader, free reader in the first term of yr 2. Her sister struggled.
Neice 1 won,t read anything. My neice who struggled phoned me to say "I,m reading the Hunger Games, don,t tell mum, she says they're too old for me" Grin.

Surely it,s a love of reading we want to foster. Yes the mechanics of reading are the basis. But if you want to.know, just ask their teachers.

Dd14 was on stage 3 ort in year 3

She was the last child in the year to become a free reader in year 5

She is now in year 9, reads loads and is in the top English set at her v academic school. She recently won an award for her writing

So please never worry if your little one isn't the best reader in the class as they all get there in the end as long as you don't make it a horrible chore

dd14?

Craggyhollow · 12/01/2014 23:07

Blush sorry she's 14

Probably a completely irrelevant post but the ops post was the kind of thing at made me feel terrible when dd was in year 1

That is not your fault op Smile and enjoy your son!

denialandpanic We have a similar issue. DS is nearly 7, in Year 2, and this weekend he came home with '101 things to do before you start secondary school', which is a Bug Club KS2 red book (aimed at Year 6) and opens with 'Can you believe you'll be starting secondary school in less than a year?' Grin We had a token flick through it for the sake of the sainted Reading Diary and then he read a Top Gear annual instead! He's come home with books that are too scary for him though, including one book of folk-tales about monsters where I had to cover all the pictures with post-it notes before he'd read it. I'm proud as punch of his reading ability but I do wish the school would remember that he's SIX.
